Cindy,

I did a Google search on "Is Glenn Beck a libertarian?" and "Is Hannity a libertarian?" and got the results I did. Now Beck has apologized to libertarians for remarks he's made in the past against libertarians, but, as many libertarians are saying, he might be calling himself today a libertarian for rating purposes. As a libertarian, I hope not. As a skeptic, I have my doubts.

Jason,

If I'm not mistaken, Obama has praised the generosity of the average American, apparently how we don't mind putting our American Dream on hold so that others may have the house, food, education, health care and entertainment they are entitled to. I watch Beck but don't become angry or excited because I feel good inside providing for others and not myself, you know, thanks to Obama's inspiring speeches.

Philosopher Jay, other shows are compared week to week because they are usually relatively stable, and have a base audience. It is common for people to watch the same series every week. It is much less common for someone to watch a show on cable news every day, week after week. There are more viewers watching more sporadically, so it doesn't make sense to make week by week comparisons.

I had discussion about Glenn Beck's ratings with a conservative friend last night. He said the ratings are due to fear of Obama destroying America. He asked me to "Name one thing Obama likes about America." and, I have to admit, I couldn't come up with one.

I know I've heard him talk a lot about what he doesn't like about America - like insurance companies, oil companies, profits, doctors, the U.S. Military, Fox News, U.S. citizens with different points of view, drug companies, pediatricians, capitalism, the Constitution, the CIA, radio talkshow hosts, the Chamber of Commerce, all past U.S. foreign policy, etc. but, for the life of me, I couldn't think of anything he's said he likes about America.

Can anyone help me out here? I'd like to tell him Beck's ratings are due to something, ANYTHING, else...

Scott,

Beck has stated on his show that he was NOT for the Patriot Act. Hannity, I've not heard one way or the other. As I said, Hannity leans libertarian, though always says he's a Reagan Conservative.

I had heard that Beck had no problem with Ron Paul, of course, no one knows how Beck voted.

Philosopher Jay,

Whatever ... you've been told enough times now about the fallacy of using a single data point that has variation less than one standard deviation. You are basically dealing with the random noise in the data.

By the way, did you know that 'white' audio noise contains all frequencies of sound? I was wondering, when you tune your radio off station, do you hear beautiful music? It's very similar situation to what you are doing with the data ...

P.S. I'm beginning to think you know exactly how you are mishandling the data, but you like to see how many statisticians you can get a rise out of. Go ahead and continue your meaningless posts; I'll shut up about it for awhile. My protests seem to have little effect anyway; I'm tired of banging my head on the wall!

Dave M.,

It appears to me that comparing shows and networks with their ratings from the previous week is a standard practice on this site. For example:

***
"The past two Sunday’s are instructive in the benefits to Fox and CBS of their afternoon NFL game overruns to their Sunday night averages. Last week with an overrun, Fox Sunday night average ratings soared, this week it was CBS’ turn. The NFL gives and the NFL takes away.

Because of this I discount the week to week changes in both the Fox and CBS shows. The Simpsons was down 18% in the adults 18-49 demo ratings (3.6 rating vs. 4.4), The Cleveland Show down 10% (3.8 vs. 4.2), Family Guy down 12% (4.5 vs. 5.1), American Dad down 6% (3.4 vs. 3.6).

Untangling CBS’s results from last night is messy until we see the final numbers this afternoon, but, as is typical, its early shows got big boosts, but its later shows received little benefit. It looks like Three Rivers adults 18-49 demo ratings slid from their premiere 2.0 rating, but I can’t be sure with the numbers we have.

After an uptick last Sunday, ABC’s 18-49 ratings generally slid. America’s Funniest Home Videos was stable vs. last week, but Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (down 6%), Desperate Housewives (down 8%), and Brother & Sisters (down 8%) all fell to their lowest ratings of the season."

I created this so that those of us who tend to get too heated in our comments here, and irritating Bill and Robert, can go and vent our views elsewhere thus eliminating turning this place into a political blogsite. View the data here first and if you feel the need to vent offtopic about the subject matter, a person or the ratings, then take it elsewhere. Thus we can relieve the website owners of their frequent migranes because of us.

Cindy,

Yes, I have heard both Beck and Hannity have said they're libertarians, but both were all for the Patriot Act and you would be hard pressed to find a more anti-libertarian piece of legislation. Beck was also for the bank bailouts, called Ron Paul "kooky" during the 2008 campaign, and called Paul's supporters "domestic terrorists". However, we can all grow up and change. Both do seem to now more and more sort of lean libertarian, but so do some Democrats. Put in simple terms, libertarianism is socially liberal, fiscally conservative. Thus both Republicans and Democrats can be said to lean libertarian. Hell, US Senator Russ Feingold is said to be a "civil libertarian" (he was the only US Senator that did vote against the original Patriot Act), but he's in favor of the "public option" (a.k.a. government option), which is BIG Government.

But there's no doubt about John Stossel being a die-hard libertarian. Not leaning. Solidly libertarian.

CHARLIE: I don't think they'll move Beck to prime time anytime soon. He could be just a flash in the pan. Time will tell. See how his ratings are a year from now. And the timeslot he got might have been for a good reason. You need only look at his ratings to see that. Lastly, the timeslot I'm suggesting for Stossel is pre-prime time.

Stossel will be a great addition and if the meeting between Dobbs and Fox last month is a sign of a possible change for Lou, then it would be another great move!

I would predict that with the rapid growth of FBC, that it may soon be included in the Nielson ratings.

And for those that caught my message yesterday about "alternate battleground" for us junkies here, it's coming along. Some of you may have missed it due to its rapid deletion.

Mr Gorman, if you have a banner that I may use in my forum, I'd like to set it up to link back to your site for reference in the debates. Please contact me, thanks!

Philosopher Jay,

You just can't resist comparing the ratings for a single day to one in the past can you?

I will never, EVER understand the point of this? Please help me understand ... I want to understand! Really ... HELP ME!

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGG!

P.S. I do draw comfort from the fact that you did not draw some grandiose conclusion this time like: "MSNBC is gaining 141,000 primetime viewers per week, so by this time next year they will have an additional 7.3 million viewers". I guess I should just be thankful that you are showing progress. I'll continue to try and help you get through this ... together we can do it!

LOL, I see “Philosopher Jay” is still desperately rearranging those Titanic/MSNBC deck chairs. He might as well, I suppose. What's left to do? The bow went under and all the lifeboats left long ago.

Scott Jensen, if there are any changes to FNC's primetime it would have to be Beck in prime time. I like Stossel, but I like Shep Smith too. Hannity has gone too far right I think, but I do enjoy his panels on his show.

FNC is in the good kind of bad spot to be in. They have so many good shows and personalities.

Now what will happen if MSNBC gets bought out?

I am surprised every time to see how Fox's # are so high.
Is this significant?

Talking about Stossel. I do like him. He seems very moderate.
Fox is a very moderate news station really.
Hannity is kind of severe but compare that to the fawning and drooling on the other stations. Hannity's ratings are high.
I know a lot of dems that watch Fox.

Scott,

Both Hannity and Beck are libertarian.

Hannity is a Reagan conservative, now leans toward the libertarian viewpoint.

What do people think about giving the 7pm EST timeslot on the Fox News Channel to John Stossel? Fox has been able to hire him away for the Fox Business Network but that network isn't even tracked by Nielsen. That and Fox already runs opinion shows during prime time and one even three hours before prime time ("Glenn Beck") so giving Mr. Stossel an opinion show the hour before prime time is, in my opinion, a great idea. To my knowledge, it would also be the first time any major cable news network gave an opinion show to a libertarian. To that end, I have even worked up a website calling for such. Click on my name to see it.

So what do people here think of this idea?

Bill, not to nip-pic, but it seems to me that the moderators on this site have deleted right of center comments at an much higher rate than some of the more rediculous comments that have been posted by left leaning tree huggers. I understand the comments should be related to the ratings, and I agree, and you do a great job with the site, I just ask for a more fair and balanced approach when it comes to which comments get to stay, and which have to go. Thank you.
