Surprise! ABC’s Doing As Badly Or Worse Than NBC vs. Last Season
The entertainment press is all over NBC’s ratings slide this season, but ABC is down more in the 18-49 demo and where are those stories? Fact is, ABC’s lost more of their audience in the important adults 18-49 ratings vs. last season than NBC has, and their declines in 18-34 and 25-54 ratings are comparable.
Through 3 weeks of the 2009-10 season (ending October 11), ABC’s fallen 9% vs. last season in the adults 18-49 demo vs. a 7% decline for NBC. Jay Leno can’t be hurting them both!
And The CW’s doing just as badly as NBC or worse, and that’s even with the CW’s automatic boost to its seasonal ratings averages just by dumping Sunday nights.
NBC’s bad PR is ABC’s and the CW’s pre-Christmas gift. Everybody focus on how bad NBC’s doing and ignore our terrible results! Bashing NBC is in fashion, bashing ABC and the CW, not fashionable!
Fox remains the only broadcast network up in the main adult demo ratings vs. last last season as they actually began to program for the fall instead of using it as some sort of way station, but as I wrote earlier, the baseball playoffs will make or break their fall averages. Fox is currently making incantations to the baseball gods for 7 game series all around!
In the modern broadcast world, CBS’ flat comparisons vs. last season in the 18-49 and 18-34 demos are the new up! And they’re the only broadcast network with more average viewers this season, although that’s not paying the bills.
No more MyNetworkTV in our network ratings averages, since they are now being rated as a “programming service” only. And we are no longer seeing Univision season to date averages for last season, so I cannot do a comparison.
Our chart shows broadcast network prime-time season to date average prime-time ratings for the 2009-10 season compared to the 2008-9 season.
