THE VAMPIRE DIARIES

No surprises, but CW has given The Vampire Diaries a full season order picking up an additional nine episodes for a total of twenty-two.  Melrose Place also got additional episodes ordered; five for a total of at least 18.

The Vampire Diaries has been CW's best performing show, Melrose Place its worst (but it's Dawn's baby!) and as has been often stated around here on a very similar trajectory to last year's Privileged .

Yay!! Love VD and am enjoying MP 2.0!

 Melrose Place? REALLY?? mehh :waits for smallville news:

Really more episodes of Melrose? Is it doing well or is so cheap to make that trying to buy a new show too cost prohibitive?

  4. Jon

Melrose Place getting additional episodes rather than a full season does suggest that it will be replaced at midseason either by the new docusoaps or more likely Life UneXpected. IMO it will be 90210 followed by Life UneXpected on Tuesdays and ANTM followed by one of the reality shows.

Good news, if not unexpected, for ‘Vampire Diaries’.

I watched a bit of ‘Melrose Place’ last night, and what a mess of a storyline they’ve devolved to. I guess the murder of Sydney must have been solved, because there was no mention of it. And all the characters seem to now be bouncing around like pinballs in search of a compelling storyline.

It was nice to see Jo back from the original series as a freelance photographer, but she checked out at episode end, no doubt unimpressed with the rather lame scripting of this pallid re-make. By comparison, the ’90s ‘Melrose Place’ was ‘Forsythe Saga’-ian in dramatic impact.

why cw ordered six additional scripts for melrose on late september and officially they order 5 of them??

I honestly cannot believe that they picked up more Melrose Place. It’s a ratings disaster (Yes, here I go being a hypocrite since I’m a huge Dollhouse fan), but I don’t understand how that show can continue to run when shows like Reaper, who did a bit better in the ratings last year got canceled?

Now, I know a lot of you say, you cannot compare something that aired already to what is airing now, it’s like apples and oranges, but I don’t know, I just think it’s odd that a show that is receiving such horrible ratings, is getting picked up. I mean, we all know that if One Tree Hill, Smallville or Supernatural were that low, they would’ve canceled it right away.

I also find it funny, that a show that they are trying to kill (i.e. Smallville) is doing better then their precious remakes.

    George,

CW ordered 5 scripts…which now turn into 5 episodes.

This is great news for fans of The Vampire Diaries. This show deserves credit for bringing us an entertaining series driven by characters we either love or love to hate (kind of like the original Melrose Place did, back in the day). Way to go, CW!

TVD will also get a 2nd season it is a no brainer. Its CW’s new flag show it will be on CW for many years to come plus its based on books so there is no problem on the creative side as well. This show is here to stay for many years

  11. Brittany, Reaper is gone. It’s not like they could bring it back and replace Melrose Place with Reaper. At least not in time to actually replace Melrose. CW only has one midseason hour long drama. They need to keep what they have in order to avoid airing repeats even more than they currently are. Melrose Place will not get a second season, so you can take comfort in that.

The good news just keeps rolling in. First, Castle and now Vampire Diaries. Now, if CBS could just find something decent for Alex O’Loughlin, we’d have it made.

  13. Joe

I love Melrose 2.0. Why all the hate? It’s really not that bad. I’m hoping it gets a full season order and the numbers pick up.

  14. Ryan

thanks! but when they release it next summer/fall on dvd, they better release it on blu-ray aswell

  15. Ryan

i to also like the new melrose place…

*I mean, we all know that if One Tree Hill, Smallville or Supernatural were that low, they would’ve canceled it right away.*
Demos are more important, which is why Gossip Girl and company are doing sub Veronica Mars ratings in some ways and still blow it out of the water in the important w18-34 demos, etc.

*I also find it funny, that a show that they are trying to kill (i.e. Smallville) is doing better then their precious remakes.*
Oh for crying out loud, no network would intentionally try to kill any of their shows. Smallville has had 9 years to prove itself. It doesn’t deserve or need a cushy timeslot. It’s doing well enough on Fridays to justify a renewal assuming costs don’t go up dramatically. Where else should they put it? It doesn’t fit on Monday/Tuesday, it doesn’t need the cushy post Top Model slot, and Thursday was needed for shows that are younger and can last longer. Friday was the only option left and SOMETHING has to go on there.

  17. Robert

I disagree with all of you. Melrose Place will get a second season. Regardless of the network it’s on, it’s always been the little show that could. The show is a brand name, but it always takes a while to build. History always repeats itself.

  18. Jon

I hope that the success of Vampire Diaries will finally get the message through Dawn’s thick skull that no one wants to watch shows about slutty rich people anymore. I hope that she finally gets the boot this year and The CW hires someone with half a brain.

  19. Tom

On Melrose Place most of the characters aren’t rich at all actually. One’s a prostitute to pay her bills, one has to steal paintings and jewelry to get by, one almost sold his camera to pay rent, …

Maybe the promo pictures give a different idea, but the show is definitely not only about the rich and famous.

  20. Don J

I like Melrose, but being that it’s serialized, it’s going to be hard for it to gain viewers when Heather makes her guest apperances. She’s slated to make her 1st appearance November 17th, which is episode 9. Honestly, will anyone who hasn’t watched this episode 1 tune into episode 9 and have any clue what the hell is going on and who all the characters are?
