Glee-Fox

During the 8p-10pm that FOX programs, last night it crushed its network competition with both adults 18-34 and particularly women 18-34.  From 8pm to 10pm FOX had a 3.0/9  (rating/share) with adults 18-34, and during that time period ABC was the next closest with a 1.9/6.

But where So You Think You Can Dance and Glee are shining brightest is with women 18-34.  While ABC, CBS and NBC were all bunched up between 8pm-10pm in a range of a 2.3 to a 2.5 rating  and a seven share with women 18-34, FOX had a 4.1/12.

From 8pm-9pm, So You Think You Can Dance more than doubled its nearest competitor on ABC, CBS or NBC with women 18-34 (the combination of Hank and The Middle) 3.5 vs. 1.5.  In a bright spot for the CW, even a downtrodden America's Next Top Model with a 2.6 rating with women 18-34 was far better than anything going on with ABC, CBS or NBC when it came to women 18-34.

Even more women 18-34 still watched Glee, which pulled a 4.7/12 rating/share with women 18-34 from 9p-10p; a decisive victory with women 18-34.  Its closest competition,   Modern Family and Cougar Town combined for a 3.3/9 with women 18-34.

FOX also led with men 18-34 averaging  a 2.0/7, its nearest competition (at least on broadcast nets) from 8p-10pm was ABC with a 1.5/5

Interesting, but yeah I’ve noticed all network TV primetime line ups (minus CBS) seem to target women a lot more nowadays than ever before. Maybe us guys are no longer watching TV anymore?

Plus Modern Family has a large male following because it’s so much like The Office.

M18-34 are really hard to get. W18-34 are likely to be brand loyal, so cosmetics, etc… big ad $$ to be made. Again, its how CW has been scraping by…

  3. FOX averaged a 2.0/7 with men 18-34, its nearest competition (at least on broadcast nets) from 8p-10pm was ABC with a 1.5/5

Yeah I can see why with the ads of cosmetics, but why not us guys? I mean we exist too, plus they are more men than women in the US in the age range of 18-34 and 18-49. I’d say video games, condoms, sports gear, beer, etc. can really get a good ad audience with M18-34.

  5. Do you have W18-49 for Modern Family and Cougar Town? A friend of mine who is a bit older than I am claims that I don’t enjoy Cougar Town as much as she does because I’m younger. (I do like Cougar Town, but it took a couple of episodes to get into.) Curious to know if there seems to be a bigger following amongst those W35-49.

  6. RG, broadcast has all but given up on men. Men watch cable or play video games more than they watch broadcast, it seems. Now, it’s a chicken or egg question of whose fault that is, but it’s the way the world is now.

  7. R.G., last night between 8pm-10pm there were a bit fewer men 18-34 watching (both on an absolute and percentage basis) than women 18-34.

On average 35% of women 18-34 were watching TV (though not necessarily broadcast) and only 30.3% of the males. On a guess, I’d cite video games as the #1 reason for the disparity, but I lack the data to back that up.

@Julia: Cougar Town seems to have a larger following with younger women than with the older women (the real Cougars) actually.

But I think those crime dramas on CBS like CSI and The Mentalist, still have large male followings on broadcast TV right?

But I agree the Internet, video games, and cable nets like ESPN have taken us away from broadcast. I’m probably the only one who is bucking the trend, since I like CBS’s crime dramas.

  10. RG, do you have numbers that show that, or is it anecdotal? I’m curious to see the numbers if they are available.

A little interesting to note that Glee dropped notably in the W18-34 demo from last week (last week – 5.2, this week 4.7)

  12. R.G

I remember seeing an article here that said that Cougar Town did well with W18-34 a couple of weeks ago. No info on W-35-59, but I assume it’s lower since shows that do well with younger audiences don’t do well with older folks.

  13. Anon, Glee has an interesting pattern in W18-34. I’m not sure what it is that affects the numbers so drastically each week, but they’ve been bouncing up and down since it premiered:

    5.4
    5.1
    4.6
    5.3
    4.5
    5.2
    4.7

  14. R.G, CT did better last night with W18-49 than W18-34 (3.8 vs. 3.3) so it appears it is even more popular w/women 35-49 than 18-34, though I didn’t see the “35-49″ slice.

It’s strange how volatile Glee’s W18-34 numbers have been while its A18-49 numbers have been incredibly stable. Could it just be a sample size issue? The more specific the demo the more random fluctuations we see?

Good W18-34 numbers for Modern Family and Cougar Town. ANTM thriving well in the W18-34 too bad CW can’t launch a show after it that stays
