WEEK No. 5:

During the week of October 19, 2009, ABC finished No. 2 among Adults 18-34 (2.1/7-tie), while holding the No. 1 position among Women 18-34 (2.7/8) and Women 18-49 (3.3/9-tie).

  • ABC grew its Total Viewer count for the 2nd week in a row, while retaining 100% of its Adult 18-49 audience week to week.  The Net was also up for the 2nd straight frame in Adults 18-34.

Rankings: ABC delivered 7 of the week’s Top 20 entertainment television shows in Adults 18-49, including, for the 4th time in 5 weeks this season, TV’s No. 1 scripted program with “Grey’s Anatomy: “Grey’s Anatomy” – No. 1, “Desperate Housewives” – No. 5, “Private Practice” – No. 13, “Dancing with the Stars” – No. 14, “Modern Family” and “DWTS the Results” tied at No. 15 and “Brothers & Sisters” – No. 19.   The Net claimed 4 of the week’s Top 10 most-watched television programs overall:  “DWTS” – No. 2, “Grey’s” – No. 6, “DWTS Results” – No. 8 and “Housewives” – No. 10.  ABC aired the Top 2 TV shows for the week across all key Women demos (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54) with “Grey’s” and “Housewives.”  TV’s most-watched new comedy this season overall, ABC’s “Modern Family” registered as the week’s No. 1 freshman comedy in both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49.

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 33% currently, from 28% at the same point in 2008. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
