Update 2: with the news that Trauma would not get a full season pick-up, Chuck's early return seems certain.
Update The Live Feed reports that the six additional episodes is a done deal according to sources.
Good news, Chuck fans, at least if what The Wrap's Josef Adalian is hearing pans out. NBC is looking to order up six additional episodes of Chuck and the show could return as early as January:
NBC is close to giving "Chuck" a big thumbs up.
The network will likely order as many as six additional episodes of the comedic spy adventure, two industry insiders familiar with the situation told TheWrap. The extra episodes would be on top of the 13 hours already ordered for season three.
NBC's move could be a sign the network wants to bring "Chuck" back on the air in January, splitting its season into pre- and post-Olympics pods.

Go Chuck! I miss this show, hope it will deliver solid ratings when it returns (but with the current state of NBC I’m not holding my breath)
I miss Sarah <3
Cautious optimism is my thought on this — I seem to recall some folks predicting it would be back by the end of October (insiders, if I remember correctly).
If there are 6 more episodes coming and they are planning on a split season of sorts (pre- and post-Olympics) then perhaps that plan will work out to gain interest in the show again. I do think it good promotions during the Olympics themselves will be all but required, though.
Hope it works out for the Chuck fans.
Chuck season 2 DVD/Blu-ray are set to release on January 5th. Could this fact confirms the high possibility of Chuck coming in January?
The additional 6 episodes sound great though.
not really bothered as dont think itll return to great ratings regardless of what do.
Audrey,
I think with the Chuck DVD release moving from 2/28/10 to 1/5/10 would seem to indicate a pre-olympic airing of Chuck. Good catch.
I think coming back in January is a much better plan than coming back in November. It gives NBC time to promote the show, and it will need promotion if it’s going to have any shot at doing well. I just hope that they learned there lesson last season with the super bowl promotion. NBC should still promote the show during the Olympics, but this time they shouldn’t pull some stunt with the first episode out of the Olympics like they did with that crappy 3D episode they aired after the Super Bowl.
If they’d release the DVD set before Christmas it would help people give it as presents and help spread the appeal of the show to new fans.
But anywway – good news about possible January and more episodes.
Somewhere between 10 and 13 Traumas get produced and aired, a couple emergency holiday specials in between, and then Chuck starts up on 1/11.
The more Chuck the better!
An uninterrupted run starting in March is my preference.
Whatever happens Chuck fans will need to get the word out when the show does return.
On twitter, TheLiveFeed is saying it’s a “done deal.” 6 more episodes and starting in January sounds fine to me.
The1337, post already updated
Well, again, NBC needed something to cover Mondays and Wednesdays between Trauma/Mercy’s initial 13 episodes and mid Feb.
With Mercy, they held their nose and ordered more, but Trauma turned into more Chucks.
I really doubt Chuck gets the 9pm slot though – question being when Heroes moves up to 9.
Whatever the Powers That Be at NBC decide to do with “Chuck,” my family and I look forward to Season 3 together. I would naturally prefer to see “Chuck,” sooner than later, and March has been a dreadfully long time to wait. January gets us past the Holidays, but allows a fan like me to at least get in maybe four episodes or so before the February Olympic break. Then, with a few commercials during the Olympics, at least the name “Chuck” won’t be forgotten. Now, if we can just get a few more eyeballs to watch!
Tom, right there with you. NBC will throw the WB-produced Chuck to the House (produced by NBCU!) wolves, and give Heroes (also NBCU) its old and better time slot.
Looks like Chuck would be coming back in January on its previous slot in front of Heroes per THR.
so, if i can do 1st grade math that puts the order up to 19 episodes. I think that january would be the only real option if they don’t want it running into the summer. Where will it go? I’m guessing the go back to the old Chuck Heroes lineup on Monday, if only because Heroes has never been a good lead in(look at every show that’s come after it, only Medium could be considered sort of successful) and because Chuck is a more 8 o clock show. Plus that’s kinda what it’s always been. But as Heroes will end for the season (and who knows, maybe the series) not too long into the new year, NBC will be in another scheduling nightmare.
Excellent excellent news. January sounds good to me cos as others have said this allows for some promotion time.
FYI Chuck season 2 has already been in released here in the UK a few weeks ago, I have a copy, but annoyingly the pre-empted “Chuck Vs The Best Friend” and “Chuck Vs The Suburbs” are in the incorrect broadcast order. I’m wondering if the US version will also be like this?
That’s why NBC it’s in 4th place
Wow, how much did they drive the costs down that they would order more episodes before even seeing any ratings. It’s like the complete opposite of Southland. NBC is making these decisions by coin toss is it not?
Well I wish they would have waited until March, but bringing it back in January has a couple of advantages. Correct me if I am wrong but it wont be going against Dancing with the stars and it wont be going against Monday night football in january, and they could use the last couple of Sunday night football games to promote it since it is its biggest ratings show.
