Since the 1990-91 season, Days of Our Lives viewership has decreased in total viewers 38%. The average soap opera has decreased 60% in total viewers. The average primetime show has decreased around 60%. It sounds to me like Days is the trooper of all of them and that it has the loyal viewers that support it no matter how many channels they have to choose from. Also, in 1990, the average h.h. had 18 channels to choose from. In 2009, that number is 130. thats a 622 percent increase in viewing options. When you bring in all the TRUE numbers, Days of Our Lives must be doing something right. BTW I am sick of the media etc. disrespecting the soaps by saying it’s a dying genre. It is no different than any other type of network programming. I have read too many articles that give a total number of viewers figure from say 1990 for a soap, then use the household rating figure for the current total viewership figure. People, these are two diff. numbers that represent two diff. things. The household rating and the total viewership cannot be compared to each other. there are 22.5 more million tv households now than in 1990. +the household rating is the number of viewers of a show divided by the total number of households. the articles i am reading are comparing these two numbers as if they were the same. This is wrong

Love Claire’s comments. To think it is even a question that DAYS would not be renewed is astounding. NBC cut its budget by 40% and the producers still got the ratings up by 8%. That is nothing short of a miracle, considering every single other soap is in decline, and NBC has no daytime line-up whatsover other than this one single show. This proves the loyalty of its fans.

No way NBC would willingly let go of Days…what in the world for, unless it’s for $$$$$. Is the network that hard up for hard cash? The niche they have developed is a lucrative advertising magnet, with high numbers of young working women, students and stay-at-home moms, not to mention a growing male audience. Days also brings it’s audience to primetime with Days star Alison Sweeney hosting their successful ‘Biggest Loser’. If anything, one would think it would be a great replacement for Leno, if he decides not to renew his primetime show.After all…what better to put on nightly, than a show that is used to being broadcast M-F? It would draw the ‘Desperate Housewives’ segment, and all those who are growing weary of the ‘murder of the night’ shows.

I know I recently started watching after years away from Days only because Crystal Chappell was back on. At first I watched only her scenes but now I am caught up in the Sami/Nicole s/l and all the others, too. So, yeah, they roped me in!

Soaps are dead during daytime on broadcast, we all know that, but ABC via Soapnet may be interested. I can see a 4 hour primetime lineup of the remaining ABC soaps with Days airing from 7-11pm on cable. Meanwhile, CBS soaps that are left will die a slow death.

I think NBC’s decision to renew DAYS will obviously come once Comcast takes over part ownership of NBC Universal. Either way it goes it’s getting renewed and if it doesn’t which is about a 19% chance at this point then ABC will be happy to take it off their hands. Their whole lineup needs a boost.

I don’t usually see press releases on soaps on this site and I guess they are not that frequent so with that I think it’s safe to say DAYS will be renewed

If any network would cancel a show whose ratings are increasing, it would be NBC.

This is quite possibly the hottest and growing show on TV outside of Prime Time. Its really turned the corner and its now making it a tough decision for NBC to renew it come this spring.
