Yeah…nor did the French "back down", they were defeated, as was the British Army in Europe at the time…people in English-speaking countries tend to "forget" this for some reason…

As a history major I've seen a loooooot of WWII footage but this still sounds pretty interesting.

There's some commercial for a DVD set called "World at War," I think that's it. The set itself looked pretty interesting, but the way they advertised it was horrific. They were trying to make the most destructive war in human history out to be like a blockbuster action movie or something, it was just plain disturbing.

---

"For one thing, I learned WHY France backed down, and settled-in with the Nazis. They actually had good reason. Their entire army was gambled on an attempt to stop the Germans north of the defensive line, and instead they poured in through the Ardennes forest, chasing them to Dunkirk. In the chase, about 100,000 men were killed."

I thought everyone learned about the Maginot Line in high school *shrug*

Repulic Pictures that they showed in school and the lousy old B movies made it look like pretty one sided US victories (ok except Normandy and Iwo where a huge price was paid.) But the Ken Burns series was more realistic about people dying in vain or getting messed up for life in ill conceived assaults

Great to see this coming out!
My father was drafted into WWII. I remember listening to him talk about the war as a child. He always grew very emotional and cried like a baby as he talked about the hellish things he'd encountered during his service. It was so bizarre to hear him talk about the war in such horrific, emotional terms. It was such a contrast to the war movies and old footage on PBS that pretty much made the whole thing look like a cake walk. Hopefully this will be picked up by a larger network. This is something everyone needs to be aware of, lest we forget.

TOO BAD! I HAVE SEEN IT! IT ROCKS!

OK, now that I've let that out. It's really good. It's long, but you shouldn't miss it: these are some of the most important lessons to pass on to our children.

For one thing, I learned WHY France backed down, and settled-in with the Nazis. They actually had good reason. Oh, sure- NOW they can be quite ungrateful, but at least now it's clear WHY they didn't stand up....they didn't have anything to stand up with!

Watch this show. It's really well done.

If you like WW1 and/or aircraft documentaries, see "Four Years of Thunder" as the airplane becomes less of a rumor and starts becoming a dangerous machine, and the men who loved'em more than life, itself.

This docu series has been a huge success in France in September. It was aired on 3 nights (on Tuesday, 2 episodes each evening).
The last episode got more than 7,5 million viewers and was the top rated show of the evening.

Sounds great! Only one problem... Who gets the Smithsonian channel? I know for Time Warner it's in a HD Premium package, and Dish Network dropped the channel all together months ago.
