it did, but "water cooler" talk is probably 100% about going for it on 4th & 2 on your own 28 yard line with the lead and not much time left. I think that and the subsequent come-from-behind victory all happened after 11pm.

Joseph says at November 15, 2009 at 4:03 pm:

"Harold, on the one hand, that’s sort of what I was going for, but on the other hand, there is some truth to it."

But is it #1 on iTunes and BitTorrent sites?

Opera can never be the #1 browser (or something most people have even heard of) unless its supporters conduct a strong skywriting campaign.

Harold, on the one hand, that's sort of what I was going for, but on the other hand, there is some truth to it. There are a significant number of sites that detect the browser, then simply refuse to let you use their site/shopping cart/whatever if you're not running IE or firefox. Most of the time the sites run fine with Opera, but the developer's simply too lazy to check (or using non-standard code).

For instance, if Amazon detects Opera, they don't have the drop-down arrow next to the wishlist button that lets you pick which wish list to send it to, the scrolling list of other users' similar purchases, etc. By telling Opera to claim to be Firefox when on the Amazon site, all of those extra features get enabled and work fine. It might have changed, but Staples' site had similar issues, Comcast's web mail is a major offender and some online banks refused to let you use Opera. Sadly, lazy and non-standard developers necessitated Opera's masking feature.

Since Opera can be set to dafault to spoofing IE or Firefox, it's quite possible there may be a lot of Opera users who have done this to avoid the annoyance of getting a "this browser is incompatible with this website" type message every time they go to add something to a shopping cart.

Yeah it's now cool to diss IE & Microsoft nowadays, I can't stand any other browser, IE 8 is the best, it provides everything I need, & whenever I have a problem & try using Firefox instead, I end up with 10 more others, I even prefer IE6 to Firefox3 & it's a completely useless piece of crap

Mike, did you ever see those pictures from before xbox 360 was released, when they were demoing it at E3, and it was running on a Mac. :) So even Gates' own people prefer non-MS hardware/software.

Interesting Statistics for this site:

I have 9 computers running windows, linux and osx, I have tried firefox, explorer, safari, conqueror, and chrome. I keep coming back to firefox.

In the current iterations Chrome is fastest, I like it's clean style but it does not have the add-ons and functionality that firefox does.

Plus you can run Firefox on OSX, Windows and Linux. Not sure if safari has a linux version but explorer does not.

Anyways so far I will stick with firefox and I have moved dozens and dozens of people over to it after I fix all the crap on their computers that they get from visiting infected sites that load malware active-x controls on their computers.

I keep my eye on google's chrome however as it is definitely an up and comer and is currently the speed king.

Every now and then I must use explorer to visit a site and then after I while I realize that my browsing response is bad and that I forgot to switch out of IE and back to firefox.

Funny story, I used to be with a software company that ran on mid-range computers back in the very early days of the internet and we had some stuff running on a PC under netscape at a computer show that was sponsored by Microsoft. Bill Gates came over to the booth and was less than impressed to say that least! We were so green with the internet that we did not even know that Microsoft even really had a browser.

"And to all the Opera fans, here’s something to keep your spirits up. Remember that Opera can be set to mask itself as another browser for some or all sites" - Joseph

So maybe that means the scores for all those other browsers are actually masks for Opera. For me, Opera wins hands down. Not only is it much more highly configurable than other browsers to suit one's individual taste in terms of features and skins, but it really is, as it claims, the fastest browser out there. It can sometimes take me half-a-minute to get somewhere on IE, but I'm there in half-a-second on Opera, and that's at least a second or two better than the overhyped and somewhat bloated Firefox. I tried all kinds of browsers, but bottom line, Opera is the only one to use, especially when speed is of the essence. In fact, here's a neat trick I only stumbled upon recently. I don't know if this works for other browsers, but if you just type into the address window where you want to go without using quotes, the http://, www. and/or .com - i.e. tvbythenumbers - Opera will get you there. Definitely no such luck with IE, at least not with version 7.

I use safari (on a mac) but have been increasingly annoyed with it constantly crashing lately. Is there any way to get the 'each tab is independent' feature or do I need to wait for Chrome for Mac to get it?

Thanks for the explanation, Robert. I usually have TVbytheNumbers open in one window, with a few topics of interest running in tabs. Currently nine tabs are open (going a little overboard today, although most are just like bookmarks for later reading). I'm assuming then, these would count as nine visits just for now.

A very timely post. For the last few days, I've been dealing with the ad at the top of this page covering the headings/tabs. Grrr. Tried another browser, no luck. :( Oh well.

Safari depends on a fast connection to look like its fast. With a dial up connection(its all i've got in some places), I've noticed IE works a lot better than safari in displaying pages. A lot of times safari will error out on the same page IE has no problems with.

Only a few using Opera/Mac combo, works like a charm for me, wouldn't change it even thou Safari is sometimes faster (Opera has a lot more options).
I still can't belive 50% are using IE, I switched to Opera from IE on windows back in 2001.

I still use IE no matter how much anyone wants to bash it...Yeah, that's right. I said it! It works, it's included, and it gets me around the web...What more does a person need?

I don't even understand the complaints about IE actually. I've never had any problem with it, function or security wise. If you know anything about online security you know that it's not up to your browser to keep you safe, it's up to you! That said, I also don't understand the VISTA OS hate. I've had it for almost 2 years and it works like a dream. Not a single problem.

What? Complaining about Netscape? When I had a web site a few years ago, a few hits in the logs turned up from WebTV!

And to all the Opera fans, here's something to keep your spirits up. Remember that Opera can be set to mask itself as another browser for some or all sites (I have to do this with Amazon to get it to use the more nifty wishlist interface features). Maybe, just like the dinosaurs in the Dilbert comic strip, all of the Opera users aren't gone, just hiding. :-)

I used Opera for a while when I was pissed off with Safari and couldn't stand Firefox. But it started crashing too often and usually not able to recover my previous session, so I switched back to Safari.

The good news is there's no need to make it IE is "American Idol" and Opera is "Dollhouse". Opera was around for Windows 3.1 in 1994 when I had my first web site (I was a Netscape beta guy at the time). Opera has been around for over 15 years, only Law & Order predates it ;-)

There are still people who use Netscape? Why? Isn't it abandonware?

Poor Opera. It's the oldest of the post IE era 3rd party browsers and it constantly gets passed up by newer brower set ups.

It's always disappointing for a die hard Opera user like me to see the statistics. I started using Firefox when it first came out, so it's not that I hate it, but I switched to Opera when they finally got rid of the ads for free users and I haven't turned back since.
