It really was inevitable, Food network competition shows are so desperate to conserve their fragile masculinity that only a masculine character who focused on cooking meat could win.

At the same, this is a really risky move as half of the chefs have the same bit, and Batali hasn’t appeared in over a season and morimoto can’t win. If the future-text of iron chef just becomes a high-low culture nexus where steak house fare is marked as superior to other forms of cooking, the narrative enigma of the program will have finally, full collapsed.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the iron chef franchise, but this was a mistake for developing the show. We went through another entire cycle of this reality show just to get another bobby flay clone. Still no Chinese, Korean, Turkish, Eastern European, Indian, Polynesian, Moroccan, other African, pastry, or techno-industrial form of cooking represented in the chefs.

Can we just rename the show, Culinary Masculinity Crisis or Steakeysomething?
