If FlashForward's ratings drop this Thursday, blame the Aussies!

Flash-Forward

Get out your bingo cards! I'm not sure if there is a square on any of the cards that reads "everyone already watched it via Torrent download or illegal streaming sites," but if there isn't, there will be in future generations of the cards.

James Hibberd reports that with our Thanksgiving holiday the Australians got an episode ahead (and presumably will remain so at least for another couple of weeks) and have unleashed it into the wild via Torrent downloads and other illegal streaming sites.  What Hibberd didn't report is that just like in the USA, FlashForward's ratings have tanked in Australia since the premiere.

Funny…the same thing happens every Tuesday/Wednesday for L&O: SVU with Canada getting it a night early and releasing it in a torrent hours later. Yet, no one has seemed to care how that may be hurting SVU’s ratings this season.

Sweet – finally the aussies get a show ahead of the Americans – this seriously must be a first!!

Bones at least for several episodes is aired in Canada on Wednesday and is often up for download later that night. I used to do that, until I got feed up with the writting on Bones and gave the show up.

I don’t know how much of downloads L&O:Sv get. Certain shows do far, far better on toreents then they do broadcast.

I was so waiting for this post. It’s not only Australia that gets ahead. It’s all European countries that air it before Thursday.

Also the latest airing of Flashforward got 0.972 million viewers which is actually OK for Australian TV. Certainly not great (the big hit is Packed to the Rafters which regularly gets over 2 million viewers = 10% of the population). Thus, 0.927 is OK = 5% of the population – that would be like 10 million in USA terms. Especially for an overseas show (NCIS only gets 1.1million and that’s considered very successful). The demos may not be great as I haven’t bothered to look into them – is that what you mean Rob?

Australia won’t be ahead with FlashForward after this week due to the series going on Summer hiatus until the ratings season restarts in Feb.

  8. Episode 10 was shown on the UK’s Channel Five just half an hour ago, so the UK/England got it early as well.

Without giving anything away, the episode was better than last week’s (which wouldn’t have been difficult) and there was a cliffhanger ending for the christmas/new year break (which you can see coming from a country mile away).

I still maintain the view that there won’t be a second season, even if like tonight, there is a lot more of the excellent Dominic Monaghan than has been seen in the previous 9 episodes.

hahaha, that would be pretty funny to see someone blame this as a reason for ratings decrease, I watch the show, and sometimes even enjoy it!, but it’s only inevitable that the show will be canceled.

  10. Hellster

Aww the americans got beat to an episode :) , tbh i don’t really care for the show anyway as it’s only “average” imho , so i don’t really think it will affect the ratings very much. Blaming us for bad ratings is pretty funny tho , thanx for that , lol

  11. Hellster

Oh , and tbh your blame is kind of misguided don’t you think ? , try blaming the people who cap the show and share it across the internet.

  12. steve

Wont make much diffrence imho bones airs the night before doesnt seem to hurt it. To Rob or Bill whats your take on what FF has to stay above in the demo to get all 2 episodes aired.

  13. steve

    ^all 22 episodes aired meant not 2.

  14. David

That’s nice. But, wouldn’t have been beneficial and time saving for readers to also post what the ratings were?

  15. David

    Oh, “If” the ratings drop.

I c. I’m always darned slow on this sites comments section for some reason.

Is there a bingo slot for asking if something is “on the bingo card”? Game would be over in 5 minutes.

  17. rich

This is frakken hilarious! As if people with Nielsen boxes know how to use the internets

  18. Holly

    @Hellster,
I don’t think Robert is actually blaming the Aussies for anything. He’s just saying that fans will use this as an excuse for why FF’s ratings are down instead of admitting that people just aren’t watching it.

  19. Allen

Thanks for the heads up Robert! I’m downloading it now. :-)

  20. Mumbo

While it’s a pretty flimsy excuse, there is the fact that the fans of sci-fi-ish serial-type dramas are usually the type more likely to download shows on the Internet.

    I know, I know.
