Tiger Woods to miss own tournament due to injuries, will ratings suffer?

Tiger Woods

Of course the ratings will suffer!  But in the wake of Friday's early morning events, those ratings losses will likely be offset in a myriad of other ways.

Not having Tiger Woods around historically has been extremely bad for ratings.  Now Woods has announced that he would not be playing in the 2009 Chevron World Challenge -- a tournament that he hosts, and that contributes significant funding to Woods' charitable efforts via The Tiger Woods Foundation, due to injuries sustained in Friday's early AM car accident.

There will be no press conference for Woods to be grilled at, and surely worse TV ratings for the tournament as a result. Additionally the statement on Woods' site about him not playing at Chevron also notes he will not play in any other tournaments for the remainder of 2009.

But Chevron's loss, might well be ESPN's, CNN's, TMZ's, and scores of  TV/radio show and web sites' gain as major celebrity + hint of scandal + mystery = huge consumption.  Sadly for us

Any one know what really happenned?. From a simple car accident, this story gets stranger everyday

  2. Is there really a mystery?

  3. Vamp Mom

Yes and the bigger question is when the truth comes out will his overall reputation be tarnished enough to impact any future ratings and earnings?

  4. TV Ratings: no.
    Endorsement earnings: maybe.

A huge talent with a well-crafted public image, but a spoiled brat. Ratings won’t suffer in his absence. People who don’t watch golf will tune in, just to find commentators trying hard to keep their tongues in check.

  6. AppleStinx, “Ratings won’t suffer in his absence.”

You’re kidding right? Ratings will likely be down 50% or more without Tiger.

And reading my earlier comment, it may have been misleading. I meant to indicate that Tiger’s controversy is unlikely to reduce his potential to boost golf TV ratings.

Under normal circumstances… However these are anything but normal, and free publicity for the tournament, “Tiger’s own tournament”, is in the news everywhere. We’ll see.

Apple Stinx, if Tiger was going to be at the tournament the ratings would be through the roof given the media excitement around him. But with him not being at the tournament the ratings will be lower then they would be if the accident never happened and he was there like normal. Controversy works for ratings, but that only applies with the person surrounded by the controversy is there for the viewers to follow it all.

I’ve purposefully not gone and searched for the rumors about this story, but it’s painfully obvious that there is something the media won’t tell us about this.

I doubt it would be difficult to find the answer, but I don’t know if I should cheer or jeer the media’s decision to smokescreen this story.

Allegedly, his wife found out that he was cheating on her, so she drove a nine iron through his BMW.

Wonder if Castle and Beckett have some spare time on their hands to sleuth this one out?

i think the Lightman Group needs to pay Tiger a visit

Yikes. Numbers were way down from 2007: 52% and 73% on Saturday and Sunday respectively. So glad I didn’t make any bets.
