2009 AMA Awards Show

Per Adam Lambert's Twitter account, ABC has canceled his appearances on Jimmy Kimmel and ABC's New Year's Eve special in the wake of his controversial appearance at the AMA Awards.    Lambert indicated he would still appear on The Jay Leno Show and was looking for alternatives for New Years Eve.

There he is again, squeezing a stubby and about to kiss the girl in black. Too provocative for ABC.

  2. Tommy

Wow, ABC is really making a mistake in my opinion. While he was controversial on the AMAs, he would be ratings gold for New Years. Who knew ABC would be such prudes after all the girl on girl action they had on Grey’s Anatomy a few seasons ago.

  3. romo

If i see that pic 1 more time im gonna puke……ooops too late.

  4. He’s also a very talented singer.

  5. Brittany

Good. The less we see of him, the sooner he will go away.

  6. Heath

    What an AW.

  7. ABCHasProblems

Here’s a revised list of the broadcast nets and their respective nicknames:
    ABC–”The Hypocritical Prudes’ Network”*
    CBS–”The Old People’s Network”
    NBC–”The Jay Leno Network”
    FOX–”The American Idol Network”
    CW–”The Teenage Girls’ Network”

*I think ABC is being heavily influenced by the PTC for being so harsh to Lambert. I thought his performance on the AMAs was inappropriate and uncalled for, but not bad enough to virtually ban him from ABC.

It’s his ‘tude. He needs to sit down and have a chat with Ellen, as she navigated the waters of being gay and public perception. When her first show became mostly about her being gay, it failed. When she retooled and showed the public what they liked about her to start with, her true comic ability, and made her orientation more in the line of how she conducted her person life, and not the focus of her career, the career started to flourish again. Many like to point to Madonna’s shenanigans, but Madonna actually had a couple of hits under her belt, and consequently had a bit more career foundation to stand on. The public actually cuts a lot more slack to “creative” types than they once did, but that slack only applies if the talent part doesn’t get obstructed by the antics. Unfortunately, Mr. Lambert wants to get in the public’s face before he’s proved that his talent is worth putting up with any artistic excesses. He’s not Michael Jackson, or Prince-at least not yet-and I think that ABC is trying to send him the memo. If he’s smart, he’ll pick his battles, and performances, more wisely.

  9. Name me one thing that you don’t like about him and except for the AMA performance, he has a wonderful performance, Brittany?

  10. ABCHasProblems

lainey, that’s a very good point you bring up. Still, they could’ve given him a clear warning about his performance rather than multiple show cancellations.

  11. Brent

    ABC/BSPN = FAIL

  12. CK

Certainly ABC would love any ratings boost Lambert may bring, but ABC is pre-empting any opportunity for protest. Since ABC was the network where the incident originated, it is preceived by some vocal minorities that ABC is responsible and “should not condone” Lambert by having him appear on ABC shows. Soon, this will all blow over and Lambert will appear on ABC again–but with a 5 second censor delay.

Why is everyone hopping on the gay kiss thing? Shouldn’t they be more offended by the simulated oral sex?

  14. Tommy

I agree the simulated oral sex was over the top, but it’s nothing we haven’t seen before from female pop stars. Janet Jackson grabbed one of her backup dancers crotch in the opening act of the AMAs and nothing was said about that.

  15. MichaelJA

Adam made a choice when he added to his AMA performance to be an in your face artist in the mold of Madonna and Lady GaGa. This added to his sexuality makes middle america very nervous about him on TV. I personally have no problem with his sexuality but his trying to emulate or go down the in your face path is a turnoff for me. Coming from the family oriented American Idol he should have know better. Or just used a Parental Advisory Label for In Your Face Male On Male Sexuality.

  16. Hahahahahaha, hilarious.

  17. Jared

I’m curious if Leno’s numbers for that night go up at all because of the controversy.

  18. lainey

    ABChasproblems,

That’s true, but maybe behind the scenes, between their people and his people they did have a discussion, and he still doesn’t want to play ball, so to speak, so ABC said, “OK. Bye, bye.”

  19. Saruma

I’d be willing to support ABC if it wasn’t blatant hypocrisy going on. Since it would have been perfectly fine for a man and woman to do that in the same situation, and even two women (ala Britney and Madonna), it annoys me that him doing it was such a big deal.

I say more power to him though. The more he pisses off the middle American rednecks the more press and notoriety he gets, which in the world of entertainment is a great thing.

  20. RealisticExpectations

If it had been girl on girl, I suspect ABC wouldn’t have twitched, but since it was guy on guy, it wasn’t the “right kind” of titillating.

Their puritanical side ends up being rather one-sided, when you really look at it.
