As of late last week, CBS has sold more than 90 percent of its Super Bowl inventory, leaving the broadcaster with just a handful of in-game avails. By comparison, at this time a year ago, NBC had moved around 85 percent of its SB spots; with two weeks to go before Pittsburgh and Arizona clashed in Tampa, the Peacock had yet to sell its remaining 10 avails.

(Ultimately, NBC closed out with a few days to spare, bringing in a record haul of $206 million.)

Well That should keep CBS going for a while

  2. Christopher

all i want to know who gets the spot after

  3. forg

^ Me too, the wait is killing me. CBS announce it already :D

  4. FYI, when I asked our contact at CBS when we could expect an announcement about the post Super Bowl spot he said that while he couldn’t confirm any announcement dates either for that or the mid-season schedule and wasn’t sure, he thought it likely the post Super Bowl show announcement would happen in early January.

  5. I think it’s The Mentalist, but hope it’s The Good Wife.

  6. Christopher

the wait is killing me to lol

  7. CK

Accidently on Purpose and The Good Wife are “bubble” shows that could most use Superbowl help. But the Mentalist would more likely score bigger ratings and ad revenues.

  8. There’s no way it’s The Mentalist. They did that last time and the ratings weren’t so hot. It’ll be one of the NCIS shows or possibly TBBT.

Edit: I’m an idiot. For some reason I was thinking Criminal Minds. They both have to do with brains in the title… Anyway, I still say there’s no way they use The Mentalist. They can get better ratings with the original NCIS.

  9. They shouldn’t waste it on The Mentalist or any drama actually. CBS did terrible by programming Criminal Minds (a show I love mind you) after the Superbowl. Alias bombed when ABC aired it. The only successful drama after the game was Grey’s Anatomy on ABC, but that’s due to its core female demographics and the teen status it held in the demos at the time. CBS dramas won’t do well. House already had American Idol to prop it up so FOX wasted it for nothing. NBC aired what last year? The Office. A waste. The show still does the same numbers as it always did. CBS is better off airing How I Met Your Mother or The Big Bang Theory, which is more likely of the two. The Mentalist doesn’t need it unless it was flipping timeslots.

I think The Mentalist would only be a good move if they switch it with CSI. Putting The Mentalist at 9pm and hyping it into their next Thursday juggernaut by putting it post-Super Bowl would be a solid move. It or How I Met Your Mother would benefit the most from such a move. Or they can just go for huge numbers with NCIS or TBBT. Or they can just play it safe and go with Survivor 20.

The fact that CBS has so many options available makes this so much fun to speculate.

  11. I’m pretty sure there is a show already targeted as it is very late in the game to ask executives at this unknown show to produce a hyped up episode for a Superbowl sized audience. The question is, which show is it? So I agree with Mega64, this is the fun part.

  12. aznfratboy

My money’s on NCIS or How I Met Your Mother, but I doubt anything will ever eclipse the 50m viewers mark, like when Survivor first came out or when Friends airred after the Superbowl…

I bet its The Big Bang Theory. It has to be. I mean they won’t put The Good Wife or The Mentalist. They would never use AoP or Old Christine or Gary or 2.5 men. HIMYM i think ony has a year left (I think 2 tops) so they pry wouldn’t waste a spot on show ending next year. None of the CSI’s or NCIS’.

CBS wants Big Bang Theory to hold its own one day. And this will ensure HUGE ratings post SB. The only other show other than TBBT that I could see would be NCIS: LA. but I am 101% certain its TBBT.

  14. Rich

I dont really care what show they pick i dont watch anything on CBS i was wanting to know who picks the network that the super bowl will be on, i wish it was ABC this year.

  15. Rich, the networks all have a deal with NFL and it rotates. Though I think NBC was out of the deal for a few year? I know there was a period of time where they didn’t seem to be in rotation. Yeah, I checked and NBC didn’t have the Super Bowl from 1998-2009. And it appears that ABC is out of rotation for the time being. Sorry.

  16. forg

I read in TV Guide Magazine website that ABC is no longer in contention for Super Bowl because they no longer air Monday Night Football.

So we have to wait until January *sigh*

  17. Jason Hollowed

The Super Bowl networks rotate between those currently contracted to air games with the league. The caveat (for now) is that only broadcast networks are eligible to get a Super Bowl. So no ESPN, and no NFL Network since they’re only on cable/satellite. And no ABC since they don’t air games currently. Under the current contract, FOX is up next season (XLV), followed by NBC (XLVI).

    Schedule per Wikipedia:

  18. As I was writing my reply, I saw that Jason had done a better job. Yes forg, ABC took themselves out of the Super Bowl rotation when they shifted MNF to ESPN.

  19. ABCFanatic

It better be Survivor: Villians vs Heroes who gets the superbowl spot after

  20. John

I’m shocked that CBS has already started selling the Ad spots.

If the Saints and Colts reach the superbowl undefeated. I would think they were be even more eyes. Its history in the making. You know for sure someone will be perfect.
