Hail to the Redskins? Hail to the RedZone!

RedZone-NFL

It isn't much fun to be a Redskins fan these days and mostly it hasn't been much fun since the early 1990s.  As a Washington, D.C. transplant in California,  I didn't used to get to see the Redskins play very much unless I went to a sports bar.    Fortunately, today's Redskins/Saints game was aired on San Francisco's FOX affiliate.

I picked up NFL RedZone about a month into the season and have been a huge fan of the service.   But the Saints/Redskins game was actually good and I watched it in its entirety for the second half on FOX.   Almost.

Without about  2 minutes left in the game  the local FOX affiliate sadly had to air 49ers/Seahawks.   And it seems crazy to me.  Even though I understand the local affiliate has to air the 49ers game, the opening of that game was meaningless.  Meanwhile the Saints were down by 7 and driving to tie the game with less than 2 minutes.

I flipped it to RedZone, where they were covering the game and got to see Brees' 53 yard pass to Meachem for the touchdown that tied the game, and RedZone also covered the final 1:27 of the fourth quarter and all of the overtime.

The Redskins didn't win, and while I would've been happy to see the upset,  in a way I was rooting for the Saints to preserve their undefeated season.   Either way, I got to see it all thanks to RedZone!

I know people will say, "Get DirecV, and order NFL Sunday Ticket!"   But I don't really usually need (or want) to watch every game, and RedZone gives me the best of everything, and in cases like today where KTVU had to cut over to the 49ers game, it gave me full continuation of a game I really wanted to watch.    Plus, RedZone is cheaper than Sunday Ticket, and I like my On-Demand options with Comcast much better than what I'd get with DirecTV.

Random post. I know it’s not (repeat, I know it’s not), but this almost reads like a paid advertisement for Red Zone.

“Either way, I got to see it all thanks to RedZone!”

Really? I know weekends are slow, but come now….. :)

Well, I agree with the writer of the article. NFL RedZone is maybe the greatest TV channel ever created. The viewer gets to see all the relevant action throughout the games and the end of games without the endless commercials.

Unless you have directv then you’re screwed. you have to buy the sunday ticket to watch the redzone channel.

  4. James, obviously I’m with Rich! I really LIKE the service. Comcast has paid us nothing and I have a fairly fat Comcast bill between Internet and cable TV. I was watching a great game, that got cut off before it ended on my local affiliate. If not for RedZone, I WOULDN’T have been able to finish watching the game (at least not at home).

John, on Comcast RedZone is in a package that includes a couple of other channels (that I will probably almost never ever watch) that costs ~$6/month. I didn’t realize that if you had DirecTV you couldn’t get RedZone UNLESS you subscribed to Sunday Ticket, though I am not surprised that is the route they would choose to go. Especially if they priced RedZone around what it costs on Comcast, a lot of people would opt for it instead of the full Sunday ticket.

It’s $6 on Dish Network, too, and you get a ton of channels with it (that you’ll probably never watch).

Best $6/month I’m spending right now. I’m parked in front of it for at least a couple of hours every Sunday, sometimes I’ll go side-by-side with a local game I care about, so I can switch over as they cut around to games I don’t.

if you are a NFL fan Redzone pwns, you see all da TD’s!

  7. I’ve got the opposite problem. I get the Redskins every. single. week. on Fox, and there are usually Fox 1pm games that I am much, much more interested in. :(

DISH TV is the better satellite alturnative to Direct TV, which is part of the NewsCorpand not an American ownership.

  9. TRF64

You dont need Direct Tv to get redzone, Att Uverse has it and it is just awsome.

  10. Robert,

We have a lot in common on this story. I too am a Redskins fan, but like you I was torn between cheering for my team to win and the Saints preserving their perfect season. Furthermore, I share your fondness of the RedZone channel. Actually, I really like the RedZone channel! I cannot believe Comcast gave it to me for free (I already subscribbed to the Sports Tier – so it was a free adition this year). You get the best action from all the games and with NO COMMERCIALS! The only draw back to the RedZone is that there are no commercials, sounds odd but the first week I almost had an accident waiting for a break in the action to go to the restroom. Make that two drawbacks, it also doesn’t air in HD in my area and that took me a few weeks to get use to since I was acustom to watching my sports in HD. In my opinion this service is better than Sunday Ticket which costs hundreds more because you get access to all the games without having to switch channels (in addition to the physical annoyance of switching if you had to switch channels manually you might miss something while you are switching back and forth while RedZone knows exactly where to take you and when).

  11. And no I am not a paid advertiser for RedZone.

    To Newaukum:
Dish network sux….they only broadcast HD 1440×1080.
Directv does 1920×1080…thats why directvs picture quality is better.
