though there is no surprise here at all and we have seen this for individual cable shows, it's interesting to see the broader impact so far:

  1. They ought to ditch The Jay Leno Show, The affiliates are already up in arms over it.

  2. Jared

No way, USA should just get more shows on at 10!

  3. Soon you will be a banned commenter, Parenthood. So, I’d choose your next few comments wisely!

The far more interesting thing here (on a site about ratings) is that so far CBS and ABC have NOT benefited from Leno’s absence.

  4. Build A Better Fan

Maybe one of the things keeping CBS and ABC from falling is that one of their chief competitors is hemorrhaging viewers.

I would think that Fox should be included on that table, shouldn’t it?

  5. James

    @Robert

Maybe it’s just a hard to perceive benefit, in the form of an absence of loss. Using ABC as an example, aren’t their 8-9 and 9-10 hours down y/y? If 10 – 11 is flat, you could say they have benefited some from TJLS.

  6. Build: FOX does not broadcast nationally between 10p-11p, so it doesn’t have nationally broadcast ads, so it is not included.

James, I agree, though it’s not hard to perceive such benefit could exist, but sadly it is hard to demonstrate that it actually does. Further, while I had the 10pm data in easy-to-post form, we don’t have it for the 8p-9p and 9p-10p hours, though I will see if I can dig it up. Even if it wouldn’t like clearly demonstrate how ABC and CBS benefit from Leno, it would be interesting data to have on hand.

    Robert-

I figured it would happen where ABC and CBS wouldn’t get much higher numbers against Leno, but the fact that CBS is +0% is incredible! This may be the reason Numb3rs & Cold Case will be getting the boot, along with maybe Good Wife. Something HAS to be done to bring up their averages.

  8. nkinsey, since this is just M-F, the cratering of Cold Case at 10pm on Sunday does not affect it. My guess is that the drop for Numb3rs on Friday balances out the increase seen by The Mentalist on Thursday and M-W are a wash together.

  9. nkinsey

OH!!! I missed the “M-F” part. My bad!!

Woah, I’m surprised ABC got 2.9 average, I mean Eastwick, forgotten and 20/20 are under 2.0 most of the time and Castle is around 2.3-2.5, Private Practice is really the one pulling their averages up.

NBC is way down because E.R and SVU had strong ratings to pull them up last year

On CBS, CSI NY is also down from last year right? Good Wife is on par with last years Tuesday 10pm occupant so its The Mentalist that helped it not drop.

Well, I think NBC has to be somewhat happy with Leno as far as profit goes. It was stated that 1.5-1.7 would save revenue, and it looks as if the profit has been put back into developing new shows.

  12. A couple of notes, though it was not specified on the specific slide above, most everything else in the report was “Most Current” data which was Live+7 through 11/22 and Live+SD through 12/6. Also, it’s the season, and Leno began a week before the season so his big first week #s are not included — and Leno gets almost no DVR.

On the surface the ABC #s do seem high, but keep in mind it’s time slot based, not show based. So big ratings for things like Dancing W/Stars Finale, American Music Awards, etc. are baked into the figures.

  13. jrt

Hi Robert, since NBC was looking at 1.5 as the # to beat wouldn’t they be happy with the 1.7? ( not thrilled, but happy)

  14. Neal

Leno’s monologue is by far the best and his show is overall pretty good and he has been the King of late night for 15 years so I just don’t see why he isn’t getting better ratings.

    At least around a 2.0.

The Jay Leno Show, which I attended the First Episode on September 14, 2009, and have now, been to 5 episodes, have been professional scripted and designed. The Ratings problem is associated with the Everyday production, rival network guest stars, and intimidation from competitors, including Letterman, who if Jay does well, Targets and Squishes Conan and the Tonight Show. Jay’s ratings can be hirer, and it is not his fault. He is targeting everyday users, once a week users, who’s on users, and there is nothing else on users, and people who cannot sit for a whole hour to watch shows at 10pm. He is working on a LIVE BROADCAST from Vancouver Canada for the 2010 Olympics, and still does Jay’s Garage and help’s Conan, etc. and still works everyday. So don’t worry about the Ratings, look at the Cost to Viewer Ratio and other intangibles. However, his ratings may be sabataged also.

Nice user name, DOCTOR Jeff. However, we all know who you really are!

*Rips off Jeff’s mask to reveal it’s….*

    JEFF ZUCKER!!!!

  17. Neal

Jeff, HOW could Jay’s ratings be sabatoged?? HOW is Letterman a competitior?? He is on 1 and half hours later. What do you mean by rival network guest stars?? There is only Jay’s show on at 10 PM et.

I’m sure Jay makes NBC big money since he does so much and don’t you think Jay will be on a major network like NBC as long as he wants?
