The Wrap's Josef Adalian writes that at the So You Think You Can Dance live results show tonight, executive producer Nigel Lythgoe told audience member's during the warm-up that the twice a year back to back season format is too much for him.
According to Adalian FOX tried to downplay his comments, but didn't dismiss it completely giving a fairly standard boilerplate response about season schedules not being locked down, etc. If true, it will be interesting to see whether they keep SYTYCD as a summer show only, or take the ratings hit and keep it in the fall. For now, I'd guess even though SYTYCD has helped FOX with its year over year ratings gains in the fall, that the show would return to the summer. For now, all we can do is speculate.
Joe Adalian has some additional speculation about what FOX might air instead next fall.

That’s not a surprise as the fall edition has been a dissapointment plus Nigel and Cat have been travelling back and forth from LA to UK as they have launched a British version of SYTYCD and are doing the auditions for that.
Overdoing a show is one of the best ways to kill it off. Just think of what happened with Who Wants to be a Millionare. Keeping the show to one cycle per year will probably keep the ratings up and the series running for a longer period of time.
It should remain in the summer IMO although it did help FOX stabilize this fall but this would hurt the show in the long run due to overexposure. I’ve read on that news item that FOX could air their version of X Factor next fall which might be a good idea but it will be redundant since they have AI already
after watching tonights show 12/9/2009…. I leaning toward not watching it at all.. Sending Mollee home was a shock… Keeping ashleigh without having her dance for the last spot is just not fair….
another false win. I lost faith now in every one of these contest on dancing, singing and talent.. they are all the same. Fixed!!!
Ashleigh had no right to walk away a winner. If she couldnt perform she should have been sent home… fair is fair. You dont vote for someone out of kindness… But for talent. for pete sakes try at least to give this show some credibility. omg. WHAT A FARCE.
With what was supposed to the first round of live voting stopped because of the world series & the final round beging the top 6 instead of 4 competing for the prize, I would want SYTYCD back in the fall next year only if the above mentioned didn’t happen again.
FOX’s current deal for a League Championship Series and the World Series runs through 2013.
Cat mentioned during tonight’s show that auditions for season 7 start in January. I doubt they’d start that early if it was coming back in the fall. I expect a return to the summer, where it belongs.
I think ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ is an important part of the reason for FOX’s resurgence this fall. I also think that it has succeeded in peeling away some of the A18-49 demo from ‘Dancing with the Stars’.
When FOX drops the summer version, the ratings for the next fall’s edition should build back up to the 3.0 territory in A18-49s.
I’ll quietly hope that it goes back to summers only and leaves a spot open on Tuesdays or Wednesdays for Fringe to slide into.
And yes I know that that is very unlikely
Ashleigh is a much better dancer and deserved to stay. Molly should have gotten the boot a long time ago. Besides, I remember Molly being injured much earlier in the competition and they had to do the group dance, taking her ankle into consideration. So you could also argue she should have never made it to the top 20.
I’m inclined to think FOX will run this once a year and in the fall. It did well for them this fall. And based on how tempting it might be run American Idol twice a year, FOX is not ABC and doesn’t run a franchise into the ground(e.g. Millionaire, and soon Bachelor/Bachelorette and DWTS)
I’m hoping it’s summer as well.
Really? It’s gotten around low 2′s roughly.
It just seemed like they made smarter decisions.
SYTYCD barely held it’s own, but that’s enough in today’s environment.
Prison Break, Terminator, Till Death/Do NOt Distrub bombed.
comparing the fall schedules.

Fox did better this fall than they have in years. They’re up even removing the effects of baseball. They will not want to let that slip away next year. I don’t think that means SYTYCD is guaranteed in the fall, but if not, I’d wager they’ll do something similar schedule-wise.
Fine by me, been saying since the upfronts that the fall SYTYCD made no sense, other than being a show with a fixed duration that ends once AI comes back – which describes almost anything Fox could air there.
Dance Summer, Kitchen Fall, AI Spring. Solid reality throught the calendar for Fox. And if they can augment Fall with another (different) reality show, all the better.
Tom, SYTYCD might not make any sense in the fall, but neither does your notion that Fox could air almost anything there. SYTYCD filled up 3 hours on Tuesday and Wednesday. Hell’s Kitchen can’t do that.
SYTYC is waaaay down from last year’s House/Fringe combo on Tuesdays and down from Bones on Wednesday. So why are we attributing Fox’s Fall win to this show?
I think the show did what it needed to do: relaunch and maintain Glee throughout the fall. Now that it’s a success, I suspect Glee will move to 8pm either Tuesday or Wednesday and SYTYCD will return to the summer. Someone has to keep the lights on during the summer months!
This season’s been, mostly, a travesty. So, yeah, return it to the summer, for fuck’s sake.
If they do only one season a year, it would make more sense to keep the summer rather than the fall season because it was stronger in the summer.
Dance gone in the fall leaves three empty hours in the schedule. Hell’s Kitchen could fill one of them, just cancel Kitchen Nightmares if Ramsay’s schedule is too tight (the guy seems completely tireless though). Or they could go the Biggest Loser route and make Hell’s Kitchen a two-hour show instead of a one-hour show. That would still leave one hour though.
I don’t know, it’s hard to tell because we haven’t seen how Human Target will do. And then if Fringe was cancelled, that would leave another hole…
Maybe that X-Factor idea isn’t too farfetched.
At this stage I think its more likely that So You Think You Can Dance stays on the fall line-up and is replaced by something else in the summer, perhaps Hells Kitchen and a second season of More To Love (although if memory serves that didn’t do all that well). At the same time I wouldn’t be surprised to see Dance start a little earlier next year so it in theory gets to cash in a little on some of its previous summer success.
In regards to the rumours of a US version of The X Factor landing on Fox in the fall, I’m not convinced it’ll happen and it feels like a bad idea unless they’re going to rework the format and get rid of the young solo singers. If the US X Factor focused just on groups and older singers then I think it would be able to put enough distance between itself and Idol to make it a viable option and easily marketable on Fox. Of course I still think the only reason Fox is expressing any interest in the format is because they don’t want it (and then ultimately Simon Cowell) to go somewhere else.
