The co-creators of "Flight of the Conchords," Bret McKenzie, Jemaine Clement and James Bobin, posted on the band's web site the news that there will not be another flight for "The Conchords":
Bret, Jemaine and James (co-creator/director) said “we’ve noticed the less we say about the future of the show, the more people want to talk about it, so in an effort to reverse this trend we are today announcing that we won’t be returning for a 3rd season. We’re very proud of the two seasons we made and we like the way the show ended. We’d like to thank everyone who helped make the show and also everyone who watched it. While the characters Bret and Jemaine will no longer be around, the real Bret and Jemaine will continue to exist.
HBO had previously said it was game to bring the show back if the show's creators wanted to do another season. Exactly whether or not the show''s creators canceled themselves or whether HBO had a hand in it, I'm not sure. But either way, it won't be back.

Devastating news. God.
oh that sucks. i just rented season 1 yesterday but have yet to watch it. and why do you say “kinda” cancelled when it’s definitely cancelled? is it a reference to the show?
No, I just wanted to head off any potential “It wasn’t canceled!!! The boys simply decided not to do it any longer!” comments.
perfect sense! you know exactly how we work, to the point where you’re one step ahead of us.
To be honest it was up in the air anyway and they wrapped it up nicely at the end of Season 2. Bret and Jemaine will continue performing as Flight of the Conchords and solo projects and Rhys Darby has gained a following and will continue to do television and film as well as stand up.
It wasn’t canceled!!! The boys simply decided not to do it any longer!
I will miss Murray the most.
Not a shock at all.
The second season wasn’t anywhere near as good as the first, so I think a potential third season may have resulted in an even bigger drop in quality. I’m glad that they (or perhaps HBO?) knew when to quit, and I wish more shows wouldn’t overstay their welcome.
They never seemed gung-ho to make a third season in the first place though, they kept brushing off the possibility. I know Rhys Darby wanted another season but I really doubt it with Bret and Jemaine, they kept talking about how hard it was on their schedules. The Conchords have gathered a decent following so I doubt HBO themselves canned it.
I didn’t think Season 2 was a step down at all. Everyone says that about every show, it gets so tired to hear that. Is there somewhere on the bingo card for “The last season wasn’t as good as the first one!!!” or is that already on there?
Your title reminds me of when Jerry Seinfeld was on Larry King and he got pissed off because King said Seinfeld was canceled.
“There’s a big difference between being canceled and being number 1!”
I wonder if this is kind of bad news for “The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency”, another show HBO reportedly wanted to bring back but which has/ had difficulties in production with an unwilling showrunner. I love “Agency”, though, so I really, really hope this is not a bad sign.
But are the last comments all from the same person ? They have all the icon with the same style
grr_argh ‘why do you say “kinda” cancelled when it’s definitely cancelled? is it a reference to the show?’
what do you mean its cancelled? its more like ‘ended’ which is a natural ending, cancellation is if it is forced to die despite the fact the creator wants the show to go on, i.e Pushing Daisies or My Name Is Earl where both cancelled last year but the UK version of the Office ‘ended’ (years ago) because the creator decided that the show shouldn’t return as it will just loose everything that made it amazing. Thats proberly the same way Flight Of The Concords is ending. Though to be fair whether its the creators or HBO does change it as we don’t know whether HBO was really happy with the show, where as we can to the Office. *Plus why do you think you always hear interveiwers ask if the show will come back for shows like ‘The Office’ or ‘Friends’ and thats because both shows ended on the show creators terms and good enough that the networks they were on would gladly have them back.
They basically did an earlier version of the same idea for BBC Radio–two geeky Kiwis with the same names as them trying to make it as folksingers in London. It lasted six episodes.
I think if the ratings were great, they’d stick around a while longer, but since they’re not, they figure they’ve played all the basic variations on these characters, and now it’s on to–um–Tokyo? Maybe? Not Sydney, that’s for sure. Australians are EVIL.
Plus, you know, they’re running out of songs.
How many people did watch Conchords actually? I’ve never see any numbers for the show.
It wasn’t a strong performer at all. Always got well under one million viewers for premiere airings, very poor retention out of Entourage (then HBO’s biggest hit) in its first season. HBO will renew just about any show once, but I do kind of question whether they were definitely paying for a third season if B&J wanted one. I think it’s ending because neither party is willing to fight for more.
Probably did okay once overseas and DVD is factored in, there were definitely some very funny entertaining moments, but HBO needs to do better. And has, with True Blood.
I loved the show it was quirky and funny. I’ll miss the guys.
adding the word ‘kinda’ doesn’t make it any less wrong. They decided not to do another series, it was not in any way ‘cancelled’ so why have you even kept ‘kinda’?
