Interesting, the ratings for Gary get higher yet I find the season less funny than last.

  2. eric

Ah, but Old Christine and Gary Unmarried are in danger of being canceled, right?

  3. Holly

    @eric,
It’s really hard to judge with these two. Their fate almost depends more on CBS’s commitment to the second comedy block than the ratings themselves. CBS desperately wanted that second comedy block and they’ve put up with low ratings to try to build it. The question is just how long they are going to stick with it, or with these two comedies rather than swapping them out.

  4. Dan

I think this means Gary ha a better cahnce of returning then Christine for 2010-2011 and possibly leading off the comedy night. Old Christine hasnt improved in its two years Wed at 8 and has enough eps now for syndication.

  5. johnthemon

i think the ship has sailed as far as a new CBS comedy block. They’re directly competing with ABC, and I have a feeling ABC’s first hour is only going to get stronger.

  6. johnthemon, while ABC’s 8 pm hour may get stronger, so far this season CBS has beat them nearly every week. (The exceptions being the premiere, the week where The Middle had a better lead-in and tied with Gary Unmarried, and last week, where, again, The Middle had a much better lead-in and still only managed to win by .1.) So, so far it doesn’t appear that CBS is suffering by competing with ABC.

Good news for Old Christine and Gary Unmarried; I’ve stopped watching Gary because I think the ‘revamp’ is not nearly as good as the first season, but I’ve been with Old Christine since day one, and it’s nice to see it getting stronger.

I hope we’ll see Old Christine back next season, whether on CBS or joining the ABC comedy block.

Gary’s son is reason to watch the show all by himself. I find this show very watchable. The number of appointment shows I have is small, but on weds. I always turn on to CBS for Christine and Gary.

“How I Met Your Mother” was slow for 2 or three seasons and it is a hit show now. I hope Gary gets the same chance.

I do want to mention the romance with Gary and his boss feels very forced and should be dropped.

  9. Hot Pocket

Bout damn time Gary got the ratings it deserved. Last night’s episode was the funniest of the season in my opinion. Good old Gary at his best.

CBS will no doubt bring Gary back for another season but Christine is up in the air. All Gary needs is a boost from a bigger lead-in and its an automatic hit like TBBT has gotten out of Men.

  10. AO

Gotta agree Gary has gotten increasingly funny although I don’t like the chick at the radio station but I really like how they involved the kids more and Gary’s new sidekick is too damn funny.

    Next year CBS should do:

    Mondays
    How I Met Your Mother
    Gary Unmarried
    Two and a Half Men
    The Big Bang Theory

    Wednesdays
The New Adventures Of Old Christine
    Accidentally on Purpose

If both Wednesday shows fail, just yank the lineup altogether. If Gary fails you have several new comedies in production for the slot.

Gary is an interesting show in that the producers always seem to be thinking “gee, will this work better?” and you know what? They’re right to do so, and they tend to make improvements everytime they do it. Curtis is way better than random painter employee ever was, Crandall was only good as a guest star, and making the relationship between Gary and his ex one of friendship makes the constant sniping amusing rather than cliched.

Gary’s relationship with his boss is certainly a bit unwieldy, but that’s mostly because she is, and like all their relationships, this one surely won’t go the distance, so I can’t hate it.

My only continuous problem is that the person who plays his daughter is not that good of an actress; the son however has excellent comedic chops.

I think Gary Unmarried would go nicely with HIMYM and Old Christine with The Middle
    Just sayin

  14. Riff Rafferty

Gee, they didn’t seem to desperately want that second comedy block in the 2006-2007 season.

“Gary Unmarried” is not a bad show (a lot of the kinks have been worked out) and I feel its best years are ahead of it, but it’s time to put “Old Christine” out to pasture. I admittedly don’t understand why CBS has never really given “Gary” any kind of consistent shot on Monday. It’s certainly a lot better than a certain irritating POS that CBS has always aired Mondays, and I’d be a lot more inclined to watch it on a regular basis there.

  15. MeowMix

The ongoing tweaking of “Gary” is annoying. I think it’s a show without direction or a real future…and the supporting cast is abysmal. I think they should bring in Jamie Pressly as the love interest. “Christine” is witty but not everyone gets its kind of humor.

  16. Tony

I agree. They need to stop tweaking Gary and finally choose a direction for the show.

and these new gains for this comedy block make me wonder if they will stick with it another year? maybe
