Prediction for the post Super Bowl slot: Survivor!

If nothing else hopefully this will serve as a curse of sorts, and I'll be wrong, but CBS will immediately notify us of that ending any  further speculation about what is airing after the Super Bowl.

Will CBS Introduce More People to the Scheming Russell?

My prediction is it will be Survivor.  Part of the rationale for that prediction is that CBS hasn't announced what the show is yet.  Indeed, CBS hasn't even announced its mid-season schedule yet and I was told it was very likely the announcement of the post Super Bowl slot would come a bit after the mid-season schedule is announced and perhaps as late as early January.  The Super Bowl isn't until February 7, so on the one hand, there's no huge hurry.  On the other hand if they are looking for anything with a Super Bowl theme from scripted offerings, they need to let the show know in advance.

NO! NO! NO! CBS Should Air The Big Bang Theory After The Super Bowl!

I know a lot of people want to see The Big Bang Theory air post-Super Bowl.  That wouldn't bother me at all.  But with each passing day that seems less likely to me.   First, CBS will want an hour episode of whatever it is airing after the Super Bowl.  They could order up a special one hour Super Bowl-themed Bang, but they'd kind of have to do that very soon.  Or they could go with 30 minutes of The Big Bang Theory and 30 minutes of Two and a Half Men, but then CBS is in the realm of promoting its two highest-rated (adults 18-49) shows.  CBS might rather promote a.) something that isn't owned by Warner Bros and b.) something that isn't already its highest-rated show.  Plus, again, they'd need to notify the shows very soon if they want to have Super Bowl themed episodes.

Other Possibilities

Some have suggested The Mentalist, but I don't see that either (it's also Warner Bros) and I can't see them giving heavy promotion to a 10pm show.

CBS could of course air NCIS or NCIS: Los Angeles, but those shows really don't need the promotion and  if I'm CBS, I probably wouldn't waste the slot promoting something that competes with American Idol.

So I think CBS will give up a little bit of coin (an hour of The Big Bang  Theory would likely generate better advertising rates, especially with its younger skew) and promote the 20th season All-Star edition of Survivor.

ZERO CHANCE

Someone e-mailed me that CBS would air The Good Wife after the Super Bowl.   I'd have to go back and look and see if it was the same guy who sent us like 47 fall schedule variations last spring, none of which included 48 Hours Mystery on Saturday.

Sometimes I don't know where people come up with this stuff.  The Good Wife is a CBS-owned show with ratings NBC would love to have,  but on CBS it is a below-average performer.   CBS might be willing to give up a little bit of money by not airing its highest rated show, but it's not going to be willing to air a below-average performer.

Survivor 20: All Stars

I wouldn't be greatly surprised to see one or more of the 9pm Monday comedy block, or an NCIS, but I'm sticking with Survivor for my prediction unless two seconds after I post this CBS announces that it's not Survivor!

I completely agree, Plus with this cycle of Survivor ending this Sunday, and the next cycle being another all stars, Survivor Heroes vs Villains makes perfect sense to me.

  2. Ben

Is HIMYM so unlikely that it doesn’t even have Zero Chance?

  3. johnthemon

I don’t think you’re right here, but than again I can’t think of what else they’d put after the superbowl, other than Survivor. Maybe CSI?

  4. johnthemon

they might premiere a new show, a replacement for Three Rivers, perhaps?

  5. jere

i think it would be good if they did survivor or also start out with big bang theory and than go into how i met your mother the both would do good!!

  6. Ben, I would rate HIMYM’s chances MUCH, MUCH better than Good Wife’s chances, but I don’t think HIMYM chances are as good as TBBT.

  7. Tommy

jere, neither TBB or HIMYM are CBS produced so that combo is pretty unlikely

  8. If they want a Super Bowl themed show, they would have had to inform the show a long time ago, so either that ship has sailed, or production crews for that show have gotten really good at actually keeping quiet. :)

  9. This is a pretty good analysis and I more or less agree with it except for one piece. You assume CBS hasn’t announced what its plans are because it hasn’t decided yet. It seems possible and even likely CBS knows its plans and could have already ordered a special hour long big bang theory. They might just hold off announcing it for other reasons, maybe. Anyways if it were me I’d go with the TBBT as I think it would produce the greatest profit for CBS. I think using the slot for promotional purposes will just end up costing CBS money. I think it breaks down something like this.

    35%: TBBT or 2.5 Men or TBBT/2.5
34%: NCIS or NCIS LA or NCIS/LA crossover
    30%: Survivor
    1% : Some other show.

I don’t see any other shows being a real possibility. CBS already did a big promotion with the CSI crossover and saw no long term benefits, so 2 in a year seems unlikely, plus CSI doesn’t really have the right tone for the post superbowl spot. The Mentalist has the same problem plus has the disadvantage of not producing as much revenue and being a WB show.

  10. Dave, my assumption in that regard mirrors Julia’s comment above. in this day and age of Twitter, with all the crew members, etc, it would be almost impossible to keep that under wraps. As soon as anyone on a show knows, it’s announced!

  11. Ben

How about a TBBT and HIMYM double bill, TBBT to draw in money from advertisers, and HIMYM to promote it, it could get TBBT like numbers if they promoted it well and put in a better timeslot.

  12. Hot Pocket

Survivor would be waster, that show has aged and doesn’t need the extra exposure.

I think NCIS: LA, The Mentalist, The Big Bang Theory with a new comedy on afterwards are the best bets.

This would be the year for airing a new show after the SB like Hawaii Five-0 which would’ve been a huge combination.

  13. Mike

My thought: If CBS is “serious” about a second night of commedy, why not go with an hour of “Christine” and “Gary”. The show’s would be exposed to their biggest audience and if they can hold even the smallest fraction of viewers for Wed. nights, it would be HUGE!!!

(just kidding, I know CBS is more likeley to air the “Good Wife”)

In all seriousnes, I really hope they don’t go with “Survivor”. It made sense several years ago when they launched the second season, but at this point, what does “Sruvivor” have to gain? Everyone’s been exposed to it and seemingly has little long term to gain.

On the other hand, I agree with everyone who wants the BBT. I’m not a fan of the hour long episode (I never liked when “The Office” did it) and would prefer it to be paired w/ HIMYM, though more likely would be 2.5 Men. CBS had a golden opportunity to put HIMYM after the Super Bowl a few years ago and instead chose “Criminal Minds” (terrible decision!).

Lastly, airing a Monday show right after the Super Bowl makes sense…viewers will be more likely to remember to tune back in the next day than later in the week.

When you first asked this the Super Bowl question I predicted Survivor. I’m holding to that. Survivor does well on Sunday and they would be smart to annouce the Super Bowl slot on the reunion show this Sunday when they announce Survivor 20. There should be alot of interest in the next season of Survivor. CBS might be looking to keep the show going a couple more seasons (something I thought would not happen – but this season’s numbers look pretty good) and the post Super Bowl slot would give the show some additional exposure.

I will throw a longshot wild card in. The Amazing Race. Already on Sunday – TAR has continued to perform well for CBS and could do very well this up coming season when there is no football on Sundays. However, TAR might not be ready that early since the show is currently in production.

  15. Mackey

The TBBT/HIMYM hour would by far be the best choice. Not just because I think HIMYM is the only great show CBS has ;) , but this are 2 shows that could still get a long-time boost.

BBT might already be the highest rated CBS-show, but it still has growth-potential. The demo numbers are great for a 2009 network show but just 4 years ago even Without a Trace got better numbers.

  16. Eduardo Peixoto

I’d bet on Survivor too, since it’s a All Star season. I’d love to see Hatch on this new season, but justice didn’t let him.

@Hot Pocket the show may be old and all, but it’s still a #1 show and a 18-49 strong deliver for CBS. So, on ratings, despite not delivering the same numbers as in the first four seasons, it hasn’t aged yet.

  17. AZTop

Can anyone explain to me the strange drawing now attached to my name? Where did that come from?

@Robert: It’s evil Russell not scheming Russell. :) And I’m hoping he goes tonight. Although it would be interesting to see him make it to the final and the jury have to vote to give him the money!

  18. romo

The senior citizens already get to watch “the who” at halftime so give us TBBT.

  19. Hot Pocket

Aged or not Survivor doesn’t need the extra exposure, it needs to just stay on Thursday Nights and that’s it. CBS has a lot of shows that need some more help right now and Survivor is not one of them.

So in other words, it’ll be like a normal Monday (competitively speaking) for Chuck. What’s the big deal already? I think the key thing that Chuck supporters need to be happy about is that Big Bang Theory is out of the picture. I understand that HIMYM does well too, however it does not do BBT numbers, not even close. If Chuck can gain ground, it’ll be from ABC and CBS, but not Fox: House (even at it’s lowest ratings) wipes the floor with Chuck everytime. The best any Chuck fan can hope for is a solid start, with steady performance afterwards…and a bit of .1 per episode or two growth wouldn’t hurt either. It’s a show that’s not likely to be #1…although if it survives and gets paired with the new J.J. Abrams show next season, I think it could really see some audience growth. I don’t think Chuck’s done for just yet, so all of you Chuckites, buck up…it’ll all work out just fine for Team Bartowski.
