The New Jersey Italian American Legislative Caucus wrote a letter to Viacom asking it to stop the telecasts of Jersey Shore on MTV immediately. They have also asked advertisers to boycott the show and called the negative ethnic stereotyping "wildly offensive."
More free publicity for the show, and this is one of the exceptions where buzz matters. Complaints about the show have help create some of buzz, and the buzz actually has made a difference. Ratings for Jersey Shore keep going up!

Yo, caucus, what stereotype are you talking about, eh?
Ey caucus, wassa madda you???
These aren’t scripted characters, they’re people. MTV doesn’t force them to be stereotypical. They’re ridiculous all on their own. The complaints should be hurled towards the cast, not MTV.
To be blunt, unless one of the cast becomes the next Ryan Jenkins, MTV is keeping its newest hit on the air.
These kinds of lame objections will only make the show more popular.
Looks to me like a clever marketing ploy for the state by members of the legislature! Genius!
A legislative body asking to stop a telecast is rather a form of censorship. There is nothing criminal about this show except maybe taste and/or intelligence violations….and all the publicity. Look for ever increasing ratings.
Now this will be repeated on all of the daily newscasts around the country, giving Jersey Shore and MTV more viewers. MTV should come back with a snarky comeback to prolong this show’s buzz in the media.
BTW, this show is not a fairy tale made up to make Italians look bad. There exists a large community of Italians with this lifestyle that are a fascinating species to many. There is absolutely no reason to prevent them from being documented and entertaining the masses of morons.
A ‘Beach by the Numbers’ site featuring Seaside Heights, anyone? The NJ Italian-American Legislative Caucus may be very interested.
Honestly, when will people learn the best way to kill any story in this day and age is to just ignore it. I’m sure no one knows for instance the talk show host(3rd highest rated) Michael Savage is still banned in Britan. Why? Because of a near media black out.
If the media would just ignore this show it’d get canceled due to low ratings.
The show has nothing to do with Italians or Italian Americans. The people portrayed in the show are not exaggerations or made-up characters. They look and behave exactly as they are shown on TV.
I know because I see them every summer. Coming down from Staten Island, Brooklyn, and North Jersey to the beaches and renting the motel rooms, and carrying on like high-school seniors with a keg of beer. The tan, the Ginny-tees, the gold chains, the talk, the behavior. It’s all real and undeniable.
Those who are offended need to get over it. That’s who and what they are. They’re guidos, like folks from Louisiana are called coon-asses. It’s not a derogatory no matter how hard you try.
This show is the worst thing to happen to Italians since the Mafia.
All the protesting and crying about this show is way beyond the point of annoying, STFU already. What stereotyping? THEY ARE WHO THEY ARE. What would happen if MTV threw 4 frat boys and 4 sorority chicks in a summer house. The answer is the EXACT same “behavior” except the frat boys could do long division.
I heard one guy had a suitcase full of hairgel. How real is that?
Yea thats not real….it really would be 2 suitcases.
The way they’re striking out, the guy should have brought a suitcase full of hand lotion.
Because Nu Joysey girls like guys with soft hands, of course.
“The way they’re striking out, the guy should have brought a suitcase full of hand lotion.”
Who’s striking out? The guys each get about four chicks per episode! Maybe you’r talking about yourself.
They will all grow up and land on Bravo’s Housewifes of New Jersey.
Why doesn’t the Caucus ask the Networks to stop advertising “ED Pill” Ads at times when Children are watching TV? I’m sure A LOT MORE PEOPLE are offended by those Ads than Italian-Americans are offended by this show.
Holy Hypocracy Batman!
