The show seems to have been watered down in recent episodes. I liked the Veridian Dynamics inhumane and sarcastic commercials during the episodes and I have seen none. It won't keep my interest for too long.

I'm sad for Scrubs. I wanted at least a season 10. Now my collection (that I haven't got, but plan to in the new decade) will be full of cancellation-ness. I'd rather a perfect ending with 8 now!

Yeah, Scrubs is dead. I didn't have high hopes when I heard the creator wanted to milk even more seasons out of the show after that many seasons and a picture-perfect "series finale".

In Late Night news, Ferguson can apparently beat Fallon even when their lead-ins are tied. That sure boosts his stock.

Stacy Parenteau, did I not write about how he failed again to beat a CBS repeat and “Maybe next week, Jay!”? Perhaps in your Leno Rage you skipped that part?

Do note he again beat an ABC repeat, but that’s hardly news. TJLS now regularly beats ABC repeats.

And here’s a bit more fuel for the Leno Ragers this morning. Of the four ABC scripted shows it goes head to head with, two have failed (Eastwick, the forgotten) and will be canceled, one is on the bubble (Castle), and one is doing well (Private Practice). So Leno will outlast at least half of the ABC 10pm scripted schedule this fall!
---
'TJLS' is also impacting CBS.

I think the older demos that watch 'TJLS' have taken a chunk of A50+ audience away from some of the CBS 10 pm crimetimers too ('CSI:M' and 'CSI:NY' are both down from last year), and may be the reason that 'Numbers' is on the brink of cancellation.

HH/% A18-49 P2+ for:
CBS 10 pm Series 13wks-2008/09 vs 13 wks-2009/10
------------------------------------------------
'CSI: Miami' 9.0HH/15% 3.90 13,740,000 vs 8.4HH/14%, 3.74, 13,023,000

'Without a Trace' 7.7HH/13% 2.64 11,693,000 vs. 'The Good Wife' 8.4HH/15%, 2.68, 12,605,000

'CSI: NY' 8.8HH/15%, 3.64 13,670,000 vs 8.3HH/14, 3.13, 12,988,000

'Eleventh Hour' 7.2HH/12%, 2.89 11,028,000 vs. 'The Mentalist' 9.2HH/16%, 3.32, 14,483,000

'Numbers' 5.9HH/11%, 2.19, 9,206,000 vs. 4.8HH/9%, 1.62, 7,463,000

Although 'The Good Wife' and 'The Mentalist' are up over same time period series last year, I think going into the fall that CBS had higher expectations for both series, especially 'The Mentalist' ('TJLS' has probably blunted 'The Mentalist' from growing on last season's fall-13-week average of 10.1HH/15%, 3.62, 16,126,000).

Anthony, if studies have been done on the "why" I haven't seen them (although they may exist). Just the simple fact that changing the lead-in to a show changes its rating pretty consistently seems to indicate the behavior is real.

CW, not WB. WB still has a very strong comedy department. The biggest comedies on TV right now (TBBT, 2.5 Men) are WB. ;)

Wow, the WB really got rid of their comedy department? That seems... unwise. Throwing out all of your half hour TV is like throwing away your gun in favor of all grenades. Sure, bigger bang, but someday you might need to shoot something?

I think concepts like "lead-ins," "lead-outs," "tentpoles" and "hammocks" are overrated too but apparently the ratings show otherwise.

I will never understand people who say, "I like Show X at 8 p.m. and Show Z at 10 p.m. on network UNO. I don't like Show Y at 9 p.m. on the network but I'd rather sit through it than change the channel or turn off the TV and return when a show I like is airing."

I don't think most people have really strong feelings either way for the majority of TV shows whether they watch them or not. There are many shows I don't dislike, but I don't watch for various reasons (scheduling being high on the list). There are also some shows that I'll watch even if I'm kind of 'meh' on them just because I don't have anything else to do at the time.

Also, if I'm already watching TV, I'm more likely to keep watching TV than I would be to turn on the TV for a 10 pm show that I like but don't particularly care about. (OK, maybe part of that is my remote doesn't work so I have to manually get up and turn my TV on and off and I'm lazy, but...).

I think lead-in adds casual viewers because they don't particularly care. Of course, if they hate the show, they won't watch it, but if its an OK show, they might keep it on. They'll watch it if it's already on, but they wouldn't seek it out.

Bill: How do the ratings services know whether someone is watching a program because they choose to watch or because of what preceeded it? Is "I just left the channel on" a marketing response that people give?
I guess I don't understand how NCIS would affect The Good Wife. Maybe once, but not twice if the person didn't like the program.
Perhaps I think for myself more than the average Nielsen family?

Scrubs and Better Off Ted are the two best shows on of a Tuesday. So i'm hardly suprised people don't watch them.

@ Anthony I know huh, people struggle to use a remote to change the channel in 2009, we are that lazy as humans.. and overrunning a TV show by 1min should only really effect advertising revenue, I mean cmon, you've missed 60 seconds of a show, 30 of which are probably the opening theme anyway, it's not like you;ve missed 15 mins...

Joe: NBC doesn't own the rights to rerun Friends because it's a Warner Bros.-produced show. If they wanted to, The CW could occasionally re-air holiday specials of Friends in place of their drama reruns and it might rate higher in the W18-34 demo than all other CW shows.

Anthony, I agree it shouldn't matter based on the reasons you cited, but ratings behavior still indicates it does matter.

There have been a few comments about the lead-in influence of shows. I think that's kind of old-school.
With advanced remote controls, DVR and the ability to set reminders with my cable box, does it really matter which shows lead-in to others?
Personally, it doesn't matter a bit to me that Community and Parks & Recreation are on before The Office. I'd watch The Office if a blank screen was a lead-in, and likewise I would not watch The Biggest Loser if The Office was the lead-in.
I think viewer preferences are more sophisticated than they were back when you had to get out of your chair to change the channel.

Add to that the fact that networks advertise on cable networks like TBS and TNT, and I think the lead-in thing is overrated.

I saw the Carrie Underwood special when it first aired two weeks ago. No need to see it again. I was watching the Las Vegas Bowl. The game was boring though; it put me to sleep before 9 p.m.

Wow - what a major hit ABC has taken by replacing "V" with "Scrubs." Something like 8 to 10 million fewer viewers. I would guess that even repeats of "V" would double "Scrubs" ratings.
They'll suffer with this through March.

Good repeat numbers for 90210.

FOX deserved its low ratings. I thought Carrie would opened with a Christmas carol instead she opened with feminine male dancers and a weird "country" performance. She should leave the dancers for Adam Lambert...

And wow CBS was well ahead of its competitors- Now if CW's original shows could only get half of those numbers, Dawn would get ecstatic!

Why cant networks repeat stuff from past seasons, like shows which were cancelled or ended 5 or 10 years ago. Would anyone be excited to see a The Practice repeat or vintage episodes of Boston Legal?

Usually because they don't own the rights to air them.

Ron, no, new episodes of CSI have averaged a 3.72 adults 18-49 rating. Although perhaps your definition of "almost" bridges the gap between a 2.9 and a 3.7.

I've given up trying to get people to watch "Better Off Ted." I'm just going to make the final 10 episodes my best-kept secret. So carry on. As you were. Not watching. 10 years down the road, perhaps the show will find the audience it didn't find the first time around. Like "Police Squad." And then I will rub it in your face and say, "Well, I was a fan from the beginning. Where were you?"

Why can't ABC repeat?

Probably too many heavily serialized shows and the popularity of ABC.com and HULU's showings of ABC programmes.

Why cant networks repeat stuff from past seasons, like shows which were cancelled or ended 5 or 10 years ago. Would anyone be excited to see a The Practice repeat or vintage episodes of Boston Legal?

Although ABC bashing seems to be all the rage on this site, let's not forget how many of their new shows are bound to make it too next season compared to last year when I believe underperforming new shows were salvaged for the new season (i.e. Castle and Better Off Ted).

Now ABC has at least 2/3 sitcoms, 1 non scripted in Shark Tank (which seams to be a reliable and CHEAP [sharks use own money!] banker) and depending on the V return (let's not forget it did hold above 3.0 for the 4 episodes aired) and the midseason shows (let's hold are breath!) there is room for around 1 or 2 dramas.

Come to think about it, that's not a ideal amount, but much more than last year. The problem with this year are the long running shows losing viewers (although not that much).

LOST will almost certainly pick up viewers who are desperate to find out what the reason is!

Stacy Parenteau, did I not write about how he failed again to beat a CBS repeat and "Maybe next week, Jay!"? Perhaps in your Leno Rage you skipped that part?

Do note he again beat an ABC repeat, but that's hardly news. TJLS now regularly beats ABC repeats.

And here's a bit more fuel for the Leno Ragers this morning. Of the four ABC scripted shows it goes head to head with, two have failed (Eastwick, the forgotten) and will be canceled, one is on the bubble (Castle), and one is doing well (Private Practice). So Leno will outlast at least half of the ABC 10pm scripted schedule this fall!

Of course on Friday Jay competes with the unscripted 20/20, do you rage against it as well? It is presumably just as evil as TJLS, since it takes time away from scripted dramas.

CW really needs to sort itself out! Next fall don't be surprised to see Smallville back midweek. If it can beat 90210 and Melrose Place on a Friday, then there is no question, right?

Mr. Gorman,

So now that Leno lost to a repeat again, why are you not doing your cynical gloating to the Leno fans? After all, whenever Leno does slightly better, you relish in saying, it is a "rough morning for the Leno ragers." Fair is fair.

90210 repeats pretty well for the CW.

I will miss Better Off Ted. ABC gave it plenty of chances, more than it deserved and now that it has The Middle, Modern Family, and Cougar Town and 3 comedies for next season, ABC is definitely going to cancel it. At least we got 2 seasons of the show.

Those numbers for ABC are depressing when you consider that an AFV repeat is their highest-rated show of the night. Scrubs can't even build on its repeat lead-in and Ted only got 77% retention out of Scrubs. This is my suggestion for ABC's Tuesday night schedule for December 2010:

8:00 - Holiday Specials
9:00 - Holiday-themed Wipeout
10:00 - Super Millionaire

The holiday specials, which are mostly repeats, work fine for ABC and are usually #1 or #2 in the 8pm hour; Wipeout could be #1 or #2 in the 9pm hour depending on the competition; it's almost a given that Super Millionaire would beat Jay Leno in the 10pm hour.

The CW got rid of their comedy development department, so I'm not sure how they would go about developing a new sitcom. They could, however, pick-up an unbought comedy pilot, especially one that was already developed for and passed on by another network by either CBS-Paramount or Warner Television studios.

battye, the conventional wisdom is that the CW scrapped its half hour comedies (The Game, Everybody Hates Chris) last season to go all one hour dramas and reality, although that's obviously something they could reverse in any future season.

Why don't CW ever air any half hour programs? I think I remember reading at the Futon Critic that they don't have any comedies in development.

Is it part of their mission statement that they will only make dramas and America's Next Top Model?

Ooops.

Retract my previous post. I was comparing the 'Melrose Place' A18-49 number to Household numbers for Valentine’, ‘Easy Money’ and ‘CW Now’. 'Melrose Place' did not tie the record last night (which is actually 0.1 in A18-49).

My bad.

I'm surprised Leno didn't do better. I wonder why NBC didn't keep something up it's sleeve... considering how well SNL Gilly Christmas did you'd think any type of non-repeat special would have won its time slot.
