Help us come up with a contest to give away some Chuck goodies

A TV by the Numbers fan on the crew of Chuck sent us some very cool stuff so we could have a contest with cool prizes.

There are the season one and two comic books, which are probably pretty rare collectibles since each are autographed by all nine of the principal actors.  Then there’s an authentic Chuck tie and Buy More pocket protector (with a couple of pens, natch).

Normally we’d just do a guess the ratings contest and have 1st prize be your pick of the comic books (the first season book is much thicker on thicker stock, with Season 2 a more traditional comic book), 2nd prize being the other comic book and third prize being the tie and pocket protector.

Oh yeah, we also have a season one DVD.

But I don’t like the thought of some chucklehead picking a number like 2.021 million, and then having the Sunday afternoon Wild Card game be some dramatic double overtime game that goes until 9pm ET only to have chucklehead win the prize.  We still might go the “guess the ratings” route anyway, but, there’s still a little bit of time, so you can offer up your suggestions.

One caveat: if  your idea is something that winds up being a lot of work for us to administer, fugghedaboutit.   Otherwise, we’re open to suggestions.

Whatever the contest, as is typically the case, it’s only open to people in the United States.

  1. Boring but easy: Guess the ratings for the first Monday episode, but the deadline is before Sunday’s airing. Keeps things slightly more exciting?

i think you should have a chuck I Q test to determine the winner. you could find facts about the cast and crew and the show and then have questions based on the facts. i know people could just google search for answers but if the questions are odd, rare, etc and if you have alot of questions then whoever just searched google must be such a Chuckaholic that they would deserve the prize any way

  3. Vetinari

Predict the number of times someone on the show says “Chuck” during the premiere.

  4. Moxy

The “Chuck IQ Test” with intense questions would require a Chuck-head to come up with the questions in the first place.

I don’t have an idea, just that comment. So how about a random thought? Whoever comes up with the best original contest idea wins. Then you have this contest taken care of, and an idea to use later. ;)

Guess the following (for the season premier)

    1) How many times Casey will grunt

    2) How many times the phrase “trust me” will be said

    3) How many gratuitous shots of Yvonne Strahovski’s “assets” there will be.

    Closest to all three wins.

  6. Matt

simplest thing in my mind would be have a photo and the funniest caption wins

  7. Kyall

Here’s a good one. How about a contest that’s open to people outside of America but not people in it! :D

  8. leo

closest guess to the number of seconds one of the cast members is on screen for first episode.

  9. Greg Chenoweth

I would do a two pronged approach to the contest. I would have people guess how much better or worse the Chuck premiere will be compared to its premiere last year for the 18-49 group. For example, if Chuck had a 2.3 premiere last year, how much over or under will its premiere be this season? One might answer +.2 (for a 2.5) or another person might guess -.3 (for a 2.0). For a tiebreaker, you could use its ranking position in its time slot compared to the year before. Complicated enough to fuggedaboutit?

  10. Mojojojo

I like the idea of guessing the number of times someone says chuck in the first 2 eps. Or maybe a specific trivia question from the eps.

I think it should be something that requires you to actually watch the ep, instead of just anyone throwing out a number and winning without watching. It helps the show and also gives an incentive for others to watch.

  11. Jesse

I would highly suggest a “first person named Jesse to have commented in the “Help us come up with a contest to give away some Chuck goodies” post” contest.

I’ll send you my shipping info. :P

  12. Jeffster's Roadie

Come up with the best picture homage to Chuck, just one funny pic that represents the show’s spirit in the best way.

    Or that ratings thing.

(Personally I’ll love a “find an Yvonne Strahovski’s lookalike contest”…)

  13. Eric

Maybe guess the percentage change in the ratings from the 2nd Sunday episode to the first Monday? This gives a range of up-down possibilities… and it would only take you all a few seconds to stick it in excel and figure out.

  14. Justin

How about a trivia contest with questions from the premiere. It could just be 5 or so questions from Sunday nights premiere. There would have to be a set time that the questions are released, so say 5pm Monday the questions are released and then the first 3 people to answer them win the prizes. The answers would have to be emailed so that nobody can just copy the answers.

This way you would have to watch the show to win, and putting together 5 questions wouldn’t be hard to do.

  15. AppleStinx

The first to correctly sing the ‘Name Game’ with “Chuck” wins it. Done already? Want easy work? Length of tie divided by width of pocket protector. Where are ratings in this? I don’t know.

  16. Nightstar

I think the trivia questions from the show have merit, but I don’t think the speed factor (1st 3 people to answer correctly via email) would be a good component. Not everyone works 9-to-5 and some folks by fate of schedules would be excluded.

Would it be in the “fugghedaboutit” category to:

    1) Set up 5 – 10 trivia questions online drawn from the Sunday (and possibly Monday) episodes?

    2) Collect the answers with a user-name and email address (I assume
if a person wants the prizes they would give a valid address)?

    3) Ask the questions over a 24-hour period (or some acceptable time block), starting on the Tuesday after the 3 episodes have aired, somehow weeding out people who make multiple attempts to enter the contest (give everyone 1, 2, or 3 chances, at your discretion, of course, in the chosen time-span)?

    4) Randomly draw to determine a winner from those who answered all questions correctly (which is why I suggest limiting entries on 3, to prevent stacking the deck)?

As possible help on the trivia questions (if you go that route and multiple choice would probably be the way to go if you do it online):

How many times does the Intersect activate in Sundays shows (total)?

Where does the Intersect active in the 1st Sunday episode (give a list of locations)? 2nd Sunday episode?

What does the Intersect do when activated (hand-to-hand combat, guitar playing, auto maintenance — short descriptions like that)

What happens to Jeffster (Jeff and Lester, of course, would have to be present in the same scene) when they first meet Chuck in the 1st episode?

What injury (injuries) did Casey suffer in the 1st (2nd, both) episodes?

What does Casey do to Chuck in (location, episode)?

What does General Beckman say to Chuck in (location, episode)?

What is Sarah wearing at (location, episode)?

What is Ellie’s advice to Chuck about (Sarah, life, Morgan)?

Just some thoughts, maybe not helpful, but the effort and sincerity is there :-)

  17. Nightstar

Heh… bit surprised that post didn’t land in a spam filter

  18. Philippa Chapman

Have a contest open to ‘Chuck’ fans worldwide, for a start.

  19. Ledz

Predict the first episode Jeffster is in

  20. Eric (Ohio)

I like the Photo+Caption idea that Matt suggested.
All I could come up w/ was a game like “How many times will they say “Chuck” in the episode on Sunday night”… but after the first 20 guesses the games over.

I also was thinking something along the lines of Yvonne Str…whatever… and the inevitable sex appeal garments they’ll have her wearing (think Alias when it aired after the Super Bowl). Game or no, we’re all winners when that happens.
