I remain very skeptical of these “reports”, but if Jay really is off NBC’s schedule before the end of this season, I will be enjoying an entree of the finest crow!
Updated from Robert, NBC has released the following statement:
“Jay Leno is one of the most compelling entertainers in the world today. As we have said all along, Jay’s show has performed exactly as we anticipated on the network. It has, however, presented some issues for our affiliates. Both Jay and the show are committed to working closely with them to find ways to improve the performance.”
While that doesn’t block the door from possibly canceling the show in the future, and wasn’t exactly a ringing endorsement, and is (another) public admission of issues it presents for the local affiliates, it’s not the same thing as “pulling the plug.”
But note that while the report uses the headline that NBC is “pulling the plug” on Leno’s show, but in his radio interview the author outlines two possibilities — saying some at NBC want to pull Leno after the Olympics, while others want to wait until NBC’s large crop of pilots come in and then examine whether they’re suitable replacements.
That sounds more like some of our commenters than an official report! While i have no doubt there are some at NBC who aren’t happy with the Leno show, it seems very unlikely they’d do anything as soon as after the Olympics, but either way, that will be here soon enough and we’ll know for sure.
For now, it just sounds like an unhappy affiliate caught someone (besides NBC’s) attention and if that affiliate couldn’t get the show pulled, it could at least make a hectic morning for NBC PR.
