“I’m really pleased with the show,” CW president Dawn Ostroff says. “Creatively, I think they’ve done a great job. And the ratings are [strong] on Friday night. I have to commend [the producers]… It’s not easy in season 9 to keep a show fresh. And you know what I think? The fans have really liked the show this season.
“I don’t know which way we’ll go,” she continues, “but if you would’ve asked me [over the summer whether it would end this season] I would’ve said, ‘Oh, probably.’ But I can’t say that now.”
Update: But commenter "Q", much more of a Smallville (and as a result Ostroff) observer than I notes that at last summer's press tour executive session Ostroff had this to say about Smallville:
I hope it’s not the last season,” Ostroff says of Smallville. “I think the producers have come up with some really good storylines this season. I think the show has a lot of life left in it. We have high hopes for it staying on the air for a while.”
As Q notes in the comments below, Ms. Ostroff's comments on Saturday don't really line up very well with her comments last summer.

I swear if that idiot of a woman decided to cancel Smallville after this season. You thought people freaked about about Fox cancelling TSCC and Dollhouse. This will be a different thing cause Fox has other shows to plug in. Dawn pushes these garbage crap shows on commercials and they get no ratings. Let Smallville finish this season and end it next year at 10 so the writers can go all out next season and end it right. She is upset cause she sent it to fridays to die BUT its getting better ratings than GG, MP, and 90210. Why CBS still employes this idiot amazes me. With the move to Friday, I really thought that she was looking FOR a reason to cancel Smallville (I am surprised they got a ninth season). It was completely obvious. I think she thought that with the dump on Friday that it would plummet and that could be the reason. But it didn’t happen and she’s eating crow. She’s known all along and now I know that the show will get canceled. I just hope she isnt a true bitch and not tell the producers in time enough for A: them to make a great wrap up, and B: We get to have a letter writing, tomato throwing campaign at this loon of a woman. I can see her announcement now. We’ve pulled the high cost of Smallville in order to put on a re-imagining of the OC. Ughh.
