Is tonight's episode of Fringe "Unearthed" a missing episode from season one that never aired or made it to the season one Blu-Ray set?
That's the conclusion of Ainititcool.com which notes that the episode has FBI agent Charlie Francis walking around alive and well and that Astrid still has her season one hair.
Based on labeling of the pictures available for download on Fox's media site, it is definitely listed as episode 121 (season one, episode 21). The pictures for this Thursday's episode "Johari Window" are labled "211" (season 2, episode 11).

How did everyone miss this apparently ‘lost’ episode? Fox cut down the order to 20 episodes instead of 22 fairly early in the game so why would they just not show this (or cut it up and repackage it as a new episode like Bones did a year or so back)?
Or better yet, why would Fox wait until AFTER Charlie is officially dead to show it? Doesn’t make a lick of sense and will probably only confuse people more.
Lol, when I read the title, I thought an episode of Lost was going to be aired as an episode of fringe… my bad.
Still, this is a little odd. Does it mean that Fox is giving up?
FOX’s press release says it is:
GIRL WITH UNEXPECTED TIES TO A MISSING SOLDIER
REQUIRES SOME FRINGE INTERVENTION
ON A SPECIAL UNEARTHED EPISODE FROM SEASON ONE OF “FRINGE”
AIRING FOR FIRST TIME MONDAY, JANUARY 11, ON FOX
After a teenage girl is pronounced brain dead, her mother takes her off life support, but when doctors operate quickly to remove her organs, the deceased girl shockingly awakens screaming an alphanumeric code. Equally as perplexing as her resurrection is that she is now somehow able to speak Russian and possesses classified information only a high-ranking soldier would know. While the girl’s mind-bending condition intensifies, Walter dusts off some old lab videos and hypothesizes the unthinkable, sending Olivia and Peter to investigate the bewildering case in an original “Unearthed” episode of FRINGE – and here’s another mystery: is it an unaired episode from Season One or is it from an alternate universe? – airing Monday, Jan. 11 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (FR-121) (TV-14 L, V)
Cast: Anna Torv as Olivia Dunham; Joshua Jackson as Peter Bishop; John Noble as Walter Bishop; Lance Reddick as Phillip Broyles; Kirk Acevedo as Charlie Francis; Blair Brown as Nina Sharp; Jasika Nicole as Astrid Farnsworth
stedj34, I don’t think there’s any way to read into THIS that FOX is giving up. Tonight’s episode was shoe-horned in late to get a “House” boost and the House episode was also scheduled late in the game — perhaps to screw with NBC’s new Monday night schedule.
stedj34 : “Lol, when I read the title, I thought an episode of Lost was going to be aired as an episode of fringe… my bad.”
You’re not the only one.
Considering that Fringe: Season One was much more satisfying than Season Two has been so far, (Although the last few episodes have picked up a bit) this might(?) be a boost for the show.
wouldn’t be surprised if there is a twist at the end and instead of being an unaired episode from season 1. its an episode from the POV of the other earth hence un-earth
Rob, that would be a pretty sweet twist, we can only hope it’s something that cool. but it wont be
Can’t be from other universe because Peter is in it. There is only one Peter because the other died as a child.
Oh thank you for posting this I thought I was going nuts!
You know, I was thinking “is tonights “Fringe” a new one?”, fox didnt really say “all new fringe…”
Was this episode bumped as a result of all those prime time Obama speeches last spring?
All they really needed was to get this out so they could spin new episodes from it. (or already had follow up episodes to this story that needed a bridge to get out for season 2) either way th
It’s so weird to apply “vintage Fringe” to an all-new episode. But it really is vintage Fringe. It ranks among the best at that. I can see why FOX got rid of it though: it’s religious in nature. For me, however, it ranks right up there with the best of The X-Files, like the Scully cancer episodes or the Scully daughter episodes.
Thanks for posting this. I could not figure out why Agent Francis was on this episode. Sheesh.
forget Agent Francis, what about the weird priest??
Eddie
it’s funny you should mention scullys daughter cus I have a psych class with the actress who played her in about 3 hours haha
Fringe: This isn’t an episode from season one. The product code proves this. 121 would imply that this episode was written AFTER the season finale when Olivia went to the alternate universe, and didn’t return until 201. This is a new episode that they’re passing off as old so they can build in a twist later on. It’s possible that this is a broadcast from the alternate universe, and highly probable.
It means we were gifted with an episode we wouldn’t have otherwise seen unless you bought the blu ray season 1. Stop complaining, enjoy, and get excited for thursdays episode.
Yeah, with Francis in it then it has to be from another universe if they want to spin it that way. Yes, it’s from Season 1, but storywise they can spin it how they want. They didn’t reveal it yesterday but I bet at some point they will explain things. And Peter can still be in another universe. There’s more than 2 universes according to the plot line.
I bet we see the priest come up again too because he seems really creepy and a little too agitated by Walter. I thought the stuff he rubbed on the girl before she died was what triggered the possession but that never came up. Also, with it happening again at the end I think it’s safe to say we haven’t seen the end of this storyline.
