The Packers/Cardinals overtime playoff game pushed into primetime and produced a gigantically rated episode of The Simpsons and a big night overall for Fox. The ratings for the two hour premiere of NBC's Chuck were up 7% from its Fall 2008 premiere.
Let me emphasize again that the Fox results are preliminary and subject to more than the typical revision. That being the case, the 450th episode of The Simpsons is projected to have its most highly rated episode (6.8 adults 18-49 rating) in 5 years (since 2/6/05 following the Super Bowl), and Fox's entire Sunday night will likely break records.
Last night, The Simpsons gain was next Sunday night's loss, as Fox had hoped to have the late NFL playoff game next Sunday to boost the premieres of 24 and Human Target, but the vagaries of NFL playoff scheduling prevented that.
The two hour Chuck premiere had the series highest adults 18-49 ratings (2.9) and average viewership (7.4 million) since the night after the Super Bowl episode on 2/2/09. Excluding that special 3D telecast that ran the night after the Super Bowl, last night's 2.9 rating is the best since 12/3/2007 (3.2 rating).
Against the Fox tsunami, America's Funniest Home Videos was down 30% to a 1.8 rating, and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition fell 3% vs. last week to a 3.2 rating. Desperate Housewives was down 11% to a 4.7 rating. At 10pm, Brothers & Sisters was flat vs. last week with a 3.5 rating.
Sandwiched by repeats, a new episode of Cold Case was down 10% from last original episode on 12/13 to a 1.9 rating.

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.
Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.
Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)
Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.
