Several CW shows haven't aired a new episode in their regular timeslots since the week ending November 22. If you start your season weeks ahead of everybody else (and pull one of your new shows after 2 episodes) you end up with a lot of repeat air in the middle of the season. Yikes.
And, back on topic, Melrose Place will still be canceled at the end of the season. Life Unexpected arrives next week (but sadly not in the Index for two more weeks).
*I have frozen The Beautiful Life's Index at its value the week of cancellation.
This is a breakdown of CW scripted shows and their renewal and cancellation prospects. Here are links to the other networks:
-
Notes:
The Renew/Cancel Index is a show's Season To Date adults 18-49 rating divided by its network's Season to Date average 18-49 rating. If a show's season to date 18-49 ratings average equalled its network's 18-49 average, the show would have an Index of 1.00. Without special factors, scripted shows that were more than 10% below their network's average are typically canceled by the end of the broadcast primetime season.
Factors that could cause a show to be renewed with well below average index:
- (F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays have been renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.
- (S) - Syndication: Shows nearing syndication (66-88 episodes), often have economic factors that trump ratings leading to renewal.
- (T) - Third Party: Shows that have a portion of their cost underwritten by a 3rd party can be renewed with substantially lower ratings.
- (P) - Produced by the network's production company - For shows on the bubble, being produced by the network's corporate production company can be a survival advantage. For real losers, it's unlikely to help.
What's the History of the Index and How Did It Do In the Past? Check out the results from the 2007-8 season and the 2008-9 season.

Melrose Place hasnt been on in over a month and wont be back until March yet we’re still insulting it. If Life Unexpected doesnt do that great, maybe it would give u another CW show to pick on.
As long as Supernatural returns I dont care. It’s the only good show worth watching except Smallville, but I tuned out of that two years ago, but now I regret it haha.
Getting ready for Life Unexpected, hopefully the show does well, as far as the rest of CW, Melrose, and GG need to end, Supernatural and Smallville deserve at least one more season, just because of how well they seem to be doing now, in terms of both numbers and quality. Also I feel that veteran shows should always get a proper send off.
Seriously!!!!
A new episode hasn’t aired in a whole month u ass.
Atleast the repeats are doing better than GG.
I can’t wait for MP to get renewed, mabye then that’ll shut u up for a while.
“Still Dead, If Anybody Still Cares”
Nope.
But your other point is equally amusing: those CW shows will, by being on hiatus between November and March, be off the air for nearly as long as their summer hiatuses!
And they still don’t have anything scheduled for Tuesdays and half of Wednesdays for sweeps!
My god, what a joke.
Maybe NBC should pick it up and air it in place of Leno? *snerk*
@shelly, even Leno does better than Melrose (at least on most nights)
I should have added that there have been *no* new CW episodes of any shows in regular timeslots since the week of December 13. Double yikes.
Johnthemon, it was a joke.
I can’t believe during February sweeps the CW will have 5 hrs of originals and 5 hrs of encores each week. Where is the outrage from the affiliates?
Why are people criticizing Bill for talking about ratings? He’s not talking about the show! It’s all about the ratings!
BTW, Melrose Place sucks.
Ricardo said exactly what I was going to say. It’s called the renew/cancel index people, if you think you won’t like the news, don’t read it.
And yes, Melrose Place sucks.
@ Ricardo and Zeker, you’re right, I should’t be criticizing Bill. He’s just doing his job.
BTW how the hell do you two know if MP sucks??
Have you triend watching it, or did you read an online description of an episode??
BTW how the hell do you two know if MP sucks??
Watched it. Don’t like it. The critics too. It’s a pity because I love Kate Cassidy.
Why doesn’t Life Unexpected come to the index next week? I seem to have missed something..
Remus, Life Unexpected doesn’t air until 1/18, so we will not get the numbers I use in the Indexes for it until 1/26.
Yeah, I just figured it myself and was about to come here and correct myself before anyone could spot my stupidity, but alas! You were faster.
I hope Life Unexpected does well but to be realistic I think it won’t, the CW hiatus is not helping it either since how will viewers see the ads for this show. Oh well, I hope I’m wrong
Not holding out a lot of hope for Life Unexpected as a breakout hit on Mondays — the competition is almost as bad as Thursdays. But if it manages to do better than MP or even 90210 – it will be a hit by CW standards.
Nice to see that Supernatural and Smallville have climbed up now that GG and OTH have a few repeats under their belts too.
This on again off again schedule for the Monday dramas is going to wreak havoc with the index.
Dawn said that Eric Kripke was warming to the idea of a sixth season of Supernatural. He does not have a six yeacontract but Ackles and Padalecki do. So do they bring it back without Kripke? Do they delay the Apocalypse for a year?
