At this morning's TCA session, ABC Entertainment president Steve McPherson said he was renewing ABC's freshman comedies Modern Family, The Middle and Cougar Town so all three will get a second season.

The Middle goes from "in some danger of cancellation by May" in our Renew/Cancel Index to...renewed.

    Great news!

This probably means that Castle will be renewed soon. Middle performed worse then Castle, and has a bigger fan group. Reruns for Castle can be strong too.

  3. Victor Hugo

Great news!!!!!!!!!!!! i love Modern Family and The Middle and not so much Cougar Town.

    Yes!!!

  5. Matt

Great news, I love Modern Family.

  6. Igor, I don’t think there’s much chance about hearing about Castle’s fate before May, but we’ll see!

@igor… While I’m a Castle fan and I think this helps it’s case, 30 hour sitcoms and hour long dramas are entirely different animals when it comes to cost and ratings.

But like you said, the re-runs being strong helps a lot.

  8. Deanna

    Woohoo for “The Middle!”

  9. rob

YES for Modern Family and The Middle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Zachary

@igor …your right…Wow this is amazing for them to renew now and with the type of shows…they did a thing putting them on Wednesdays…

  11. Ren

    Let’s hope Ugly Bettys next!

Modern Family was a lock. Great news for the Middle though… it’s like the little engine that could >.>’

As for Cougartown: meh, another season of leeching off Modern Family. The Middle is a much better show and has had it much tougher and is still kicking.

igor: I like castle too, but a renewal of the middle can’t “obviously” mean a renewal of castle. Nice wishful thinking. Shouldn’t this be a bingo card? “My show should be renewed because show X on the same network was renewed with worse ratings.”

That is awesome! The Middle gets better every week. All three were excellent last week. They asked on a couple of other sites if Lisa Kudrow should become a regular or semi-regular on CT, and I think so. Her character was like a piece that was missing – someone who didn’t love CC’s character.

Castle’s ratings problem is less a problem with its numbers and more a problem with its retention. While it may do better than The Middle it also comes on after Dancing with the Stars, and now the Bachelor, so last night for instance ABC went from a 4 to a 2.6. The Middle on the other hand starts off the night so there is less expectation.

Also The Middle has been improving and was getting like the same numbers for reruns that it got for new episodes.

Amazing news, I love all three shows and they all deserve it! The Middle is like the little show that could and last weeks episodes were hilarious! Here’s to a great year!

good news for the middle…but cougar town? you know, no one really seems to like this show.

  17. Ren

Ugly Betty next please ABC :)

  18. Tori

Surprised about the Middle’s early pickup. Thought they would wait to see how their midseason comedies meshed with Modern Family and Cougar Town before they committed to another season of The Middle.

  19. Ren

I disagree Mark-Allen, Cougar Town has been a success and certianly has viewers. So maybe you just don’t like the show? :(

Good to see sitcoms making a come back, although Cougar Town not my favorite. To bad live studio audience sitcoms can’t make a come back, Kelsey Grammar shows failed. I a big fan of scripted shows. Chuck is doing well, it funny imaginative and original which is a hard concept for networks and NBC. I wish it was on cable.
