CBS's EMMY AWARD-WINNING REALITY FRANCHISES TO RETURN IN 2010-2011

Network Orders Two More Editions of "Survivor"

"The Amazing Race" to Make its 17th Sprint Around the World

CBS has ordered more editions of its Emmy Award-winning reality franchises-SURVIVOR and THE Amazing Race-for broadcast in the 2010-2011 season.

SURVIVOR will return with two more editions, marking the 21st and 22nd installments of broadcast television's longest-running reality competition series.

Last fall, SURVIVOR: SAMOA (7.8/12, 13.45m million viewers), the franchise's 19th edition, continued its ratings dominance, winning its Thursday (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) time period in viewers, adults 18-49 (4.3/12) and adults 25-54 (5.4/13).

The series' 20th edition, SURVIVOR: HEROES VS. VILLAINS, premieres with a special two-hour episode on Thursday, Feb. 11 (8:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT). SURVIVOR: HEROES VS. VILLAINS reunites 20 of the most memorable, heroic and controversial castaways from previous SURVIVOR seasons. The series' best strategists will face off in their attempt to overcome - or embrace - the label placed upon them when they return to seek Revenge or redemption, all in an effort to win the title of Sole Survivor. Emmy Award winner Jeff Probst hosts.

The groundbreaking reality series, which premiered in May 2000, has anchored CBS's winning Thursday lineup since February 2001. It won an Emmy Award in 2001 in the category of "Outstanding Non-Fiction Program" (Special Class). Host Jeff Probst is a two-time Emmy Award winner in the category of "Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Series."

SURVIVOR is produced by SEG, Inc. Mark Burnett is executive producer and David Burris and Leisa Francis are co-executive producers.

CBS has also ordered the 17th edition of the seven-time Emmy Award-winning reality series THE Amazing Race, hosted by Phil Keoghan.

THE Amazing Race recently concluded its 15th edition with year-to-year gains in viewers (11.91m, +7%), adults 18-49 (3.7/09, +6%) and adults 25-54 (4.7/10, +7%).

THE Amazing Race has won the Emmy Award for "Outstanding Reality Competition Program" every year since the category was created seven years ago.

THE Amazing Race 16 returns Sunday, Feb. 14 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT). Jerry Bruckheimer, Bertram van Munster, Jonathan Littman, Elise Doganieri and Amy Chacon are the executive producers for Jerry Bruckheimer Television and Earthview Inc. in association with ABC Studios and Amazing Race Productions. Phil Keoghan is host. THE Amazing Race was created by Bertram van Munster and Elise Doganieri.

    YAY!

The Amazing Race is a show that should be renewed… well, forever!

  2. AZTop

Excellent! A real vote of confidence that both were renewed this early. 8 years & 10 years and still getting decent ratings. Not too shabby. Let’s see if American Idol is around for it’s 21 & 22nd season.

  3. Survivor 20 will do as well if not better than Samoa, that is for certain. Until something can actually challenge Survivor in that timeslot I’d imagine they have nothing to worry about.

CBS! You need have The Amazing Race behind your Super Bowl coverage! Or Good Wife should get boost like Grey Antanomy had from Super Bowl 40! Undercover Boss looks like Fox’s “philanthropy show” Last Season!

  5. Mumbo

Survivor is slowly becoming CBS’s Thursday night anchor. Look at how CSI and The Mentalist were down without it last week. It’s also one of the youngest-skewing shows on the network, and it’s remarkably consistent. It is going absolutely nowhere for a long time, even if Probst eventually does call it a day.

  6. On a personal note, “Heroes vs. Villians” looks to be the first Survivor series I will watch since “All Stars”.

  7. ThingFish

Now if they would just take TAR off of Sundays. I’m tired of the delayed starts!

  8. pal

Yay for race renewal! tbh haven’t seen a full survivor season for a quite a while, but whenever I do tune in, it does still prove entertaining as always.

  9. mswood

WTF with just one season (again) for TAR. It does nearly survivor numbers on Sunday with shows that perform horrible in the adults 18-49 demo.

ARRGGGHHHH. Ratings growth this season over the last two (survivor was actually down compared to last Fall cycle, as it is normally).

I watch every season of Survivor and when one of these “all star editions” rolls around? I can’t believe how many of them I’ve forgotten. Looking forward to this next “Heroes / Villains.” Amazing Race is great TV glad it will continue as well. I would much prefer one of these after the SuperBowl.

Bill: Survivor 20 could be very good, or a total bust. I remember All-Stars and wasn’t that impressed because there was too much personal stuff going on between cast members. However, we are getting some people from all the way back to the beginning, that should give us some good “where are they now” moments. And we get another season of evil Russell. Any predictions on how long he lasts with this group?

It’s interesting that people are willing to play again and again. It’s certainly not the easiest unscripted show for cast members. Let’s see how the Jersey Shores cast would do on Survivor.

(Well Boston Rob might have been perfect for Jersey Shores a few years ago.)

  12. mswood

Well I could tell you but that would be spoiling…….

  13. Kermonk

They should a prison version – the survivor lives, the rest get executed – true survivor! *g*

    AZTop…

I don’t think they’ll let Russell last very long this time. He fooled all of those people last time and made it to the top. I’d look for him to go pretty early this time…

Great to see a Survivor renewal. I watched the early seasons, and then kind of stopped watching for a while. But, Russell and that gang last season got me back into it… I’m excited for the new season!

  15. Don J

Congrats to Survivor for getting 2 more seasons. Now they have to re-sign Jeff Probst since his contract expires at the end of Heroes vs Villains.

As for the Amazing Race. I think CBS only renews it for 1 cycle at a time since it’s probably one of the most expensive reality shows on TV right now. I heard they spend over $2M a season on airfaire alone since they end up paying full costs. If the ratings continue to be good, I would expect a 18th cycle in spring 2011.

    Andrew

Filming of All Stars happened before they aired much of this current season. Thus he will have an advantage (at elast in comparison to others).

  17. Mega64

Not too surprising both are back. They’re still two of the strongest reality shows around barring American Idol, and both continue to bring on the entertainment while still being some of the best-quality reality TV around, plus they still manage to impress in the ratings.

Still glad to see both of them back, of course. They’re two of my favorites shows and I still have yet to miss an episode.

  18. Johnny

    Long live Amazing Race!

  19. AZTop

mswood – yeah Russell was an unknown to them, but the very fact that he was included should have everyone on their guard about him. I’m guessing he’s out before the jury this time unless he really decides to be more low-key.

I would hope they sign Probst for the next two seasons.

Interesting about the cost of these two shows. Since there is no rerun value for CBS, I wonder how the economics work out. These shows have to be expensive to produce given locations, and large crews.

Has anyone seen anything about how much CBS makes on these shows?

  20. mswood

    AZTop

While the fact that Russell made it to an All Stars version should so that he has some abilty or luck, they still will no almost nothing about him. And unlike any other player they have nothing to watch to reference.
