Fox's Bones and Fringe had an up night against the mostly repeat competition on a topsy turvy Thursday that saw Fox finish #1 in the adults 18-49 ratings, but had Univision tied for #2 and the CW tied with NBC and ABC for #4. The CW's Vampire Diaries recovered from its sleepy 2010 start to near its season's new episode ratings average. While ABC's The Deep End sinks slowly in the West.

With CBS and ABC effectively on the sidelines, Fox took the ball and ran with it on Thursday night. Bones was up 3% from last week to a 3.6 adults 18-49 rating its highest rated show in over 2 years (11/6/07). Fringe was up 15% to a 3.0 rating, tieing its highest 18-49 rating this season.

The other big beneficiary of the weaker competition at 8pm was CW's Vampire Diaries, which was up 13% from its slow post-repeat gap start last week to a 1.8 adults 18-49 rating, near its season average for new episodes. Vampire Diaries had its best adults 18-34, adults 18-49 and total viewer (3.72mil) numbers since Nov. 12. Supernatural, however, did not share in the bounty, down 8% from last week to a 1.3 adults 18-49 rating.

Even with reduced competition, ABC's The Deep End sank from its premiere, down 6% to a 1.7 adults 18-49 rating. Glug, glug, glug. If the Olympics weren't coming up soon to maul everything else for two weeks I think there might be a reasonable chance that ABC would pull The Deep End off the schedule early to stop the carnage.

The Jay Leno Show was the only new show on NBC, but few noticed, as it fell 14% from last week to a 1.2 rating, it's lowest rated Thursday airing ever.

In Late-Night Local People Meters Thursday night:

  • Conan O'Brien (0.8/3 in 18-49 in local people meters with an encore telecast) outscored CBS's Late Show (0.7/3 with an encore telecast) in Nielsen's 25 local markets with People Meters.
  • At 12:35 a.m., Jimmy Fallon (0.5/3 in 18-49 in local people meters with an encore telecast) topped CBS's first-run Late Late Show (0.4/3).

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. What about Supernatural?

  2. gdigs

    Wow..
Vampire Diaries is really a hit. I knew it would go up. And episodes just keep getting better and draw more interest. Its wierd seeing CW not in last place.

The CW needs to capitalize on the hit that it has. I bet they will move Supernatural off to Fridays and launch a new show on Thursdays. Nothing is getting ratings like VD and they need those kind of numbers to launch a new show

  3. Really Tired

    (Braces for mostly ABC poasts)

  4. thirdsaint

Was ABC on repeats as well? Interesting to see Univision #2, haha. Still, any news on the upswing for Fringe is good news, even against repeats. The next episode looks to be a killer one with it being very heavy in mythology. No monster-of-the-week next week.

  5. Show ratings table now added to the post.

  6. John

It finally happened. CW drew with NBC, even if they were in repeats.

  7. Samuel

    WOW…

The CW before ABC ans NBC… UNIVISION in second…

    What a screwed up night…

Well good for Fringe, up again. I guess Fox is watching closely

  8. Gaaa

    WOW for Fringe.
    The Deep end is dead

  9. John

    Go Bones and Fringe! :D

  10. Robert Wells

Wow…what great news for Fringe fans! We’ve finally hit a 3.0 share! That’s huge…I really hope fox keeps investing in this gem. It’s such a great show!

  11. It’s too bad about “The Deep End”. The show has some potential. Perhaps less Billy Zane and more Clancy Brown in the stories?

It’s nice to see “Fringe” in the 3.0-3.1 range even if it was going up against repeats.

  12. thirdsaint

So what we are seeing is Fringe would get a 3.1 or so without the tough competition they face. I think that’s a good thing and I highly doubt Lie to Me would be able to pull that number. I’m gaining more and more confidence that Fringe will be renewed the more I read interviews with the execs at Fox and JJ Abrams about the show.

  13. Im hoping a 2.6 million viewers average for Supernatural is good?

  14. forg

Live for The Moment flopped hard

A Survivor 10th anniversary special will air next week it would be interesting if Bones would continue it’s ratings momentum

In fairness to The Deep End it didn’t dropped that hard from its already low series premiere numbers (I was thinking it would drop to 1.2-1.4 this week) but still not renewable

Good for Vampire Diaries although I was hoping it would go 2.0 this week but great numbers for CW still.

  15. the128boy

Look at those repeat numbers for Community/Parks… low, yes, but 80% of new episode numbers. That’s pretty impressive, at least. They still trounced Leno…

  16. Samuel

    Well wow…

Fringe just did it’s best numbers of the Season 3.0 on a Thursday night, did better than the one on Monday night after house, Bones at 3.6 is amazing. So I guess the fight between LTM and Fringe is getting more and more interesting, and it seems like Fringe can really own it’s own even on Thursday. Even if its against repeats, its still better than the premiere

VD was at its normal 1.8

  17. greysfan

WTF? ABC last? CW 3rd and Uni 2nd? What a strange night. Bones continues to impress and i am glad to. It is a fantastic show.

Glad to see Fringe win the timeslot. Also Vampire Diaries 2nd at 8pm is a huge shock. CW have a hit on their hands. They should have launched Life Unexpected after it. That show is good but the ratings say otherwise

  18. greysfan

    I meant 4th for CW

  19. Trent

It isn’t really fair to say “The Deep End” sunk. It only pulled a 1.8 last week, so a 1.7 isn’t sinking imho.

  20. GEORGE 11

jay leno was repeat? cause it was beaten not only from cbs repeat but also from private practice repeat!!!!
