Early Ratings: Grammy's Way Up, Best Metered Market Numbers Since 2004

Categories: TV Ratings

Update: 10.4 adults 18-49 rating, best since 2004.  26.6 million average viewers, best since 2001.

Last night the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards pulled an 18.2/27 household rating share from 8pm-11pm.  That's up over 42% from last year's 12.8/20, and better still versus 2008's 12.4/19 and on pace for the best outing in six years.

I'm not giving all the credit to Taylor Swift, but she's definitely good for ratings.  If those metered market numbers hold up it will be over 20 million  just in households, and have a shot at surpassing 2004's 26.3 million viewers.

What else was on to challenge the awards?

  2. rob

WOW, So Im going to guess ABC got crushed and was dumb to air new programming last night against the Grammys.

  3. bruce

Everybody else clears the decks of programming for big events, allowing inflated ratings. I didn’t watch a minute of the usual bore-fest.

  4. Bruce: bzzt, thanks for playing, but..

    ABC = All new programming!
FOX = all new programming too!
NBC = technically all new programming (Dateline+SNL Sports All Stars)

You folks will have to stay tuned for the full overnight report which is at least an hour away. My guess is DH takes a hit, but didn’t get crushed.

i watched the grammys and enjoyed it..Loved beyonce and greenday… I watched it all except the dh hour i had to turn it and watch dh :) I did switch it when they had a good performance tho LOL

This is going to be an interesting sweeps. CBS has this big grammy night, the superbowl, and a solid lineup. Fox has AI and NBC has the Olympics for part of it.

  7. steven

ABC has the Oscars and that’s always big.

well I give the credit to Beyonce
I could nt help feeling ashamed for Taylor Swift and that miserable excuse of a performance.

  9. I watched the grammy’s last night and switched to the Pro Bowl on ESPN during Taylor Swift songs and commercials. CBS sensors had their hands full with the last rap song of the night. The song was 3-4 minutes long and CBS bleeped almost half of it. Now that’s entertainment … NOT ! At least they saved that garbage for 11:30 PM.

I wonder if viewing was up across the board due to the very cold weather through most of the country and especially the east coast.

  11. Val, February sweeps is Feb 4 – March 3rd. It likely got pushed a week earlier than normal because the Super Bowl was a bit later than usual. Definitely a good trade for CBS! ;-)

  12. I’d say the only other program close to the Grammys will be the Pro Bowl on ESPN, so the cable numbers should be interesting…

  13. Danny

If those numbers stay the same then will it not be the best household rating since 1993?

  14. Ritchie

Grammy’s was one of the worst award shows I’ve ever seen. It was more a spectacle of who put on a better act. And the director must have been on crack. And can we please do away with the 2 pits were kids are payed to wave their arms for every act. Not one moment of sincerity, honesty or humanity.

  15. val

Steven the Oscars are on March 7th past sweeps period but the Oscars will be big this year with the field of best picture nominees expanded to 10 and Avatar for sure will get some nominations.

  16. Andrea

Interesting, however, that the Grammy’s really did no better than what American Idol/NCIS did last Tuesday…

  17. Andrea, good point. Grammy ratings were approximately American Idol level, although over 3.5 hours vs. Idols’s 1-2 hours. NCIS ratings are less than half the Grammy/Idol level.
