Robert posted last week about the 20% ratings fall Leverage suffered against the season premiere of Psych. Last night Psych got hit hard in a post-premiere slump, and Leverage was mixed, but topped Psych in average viewers and closed the gap in adults 18-49.
Psych slid almost 35% to just 2.856 million viewers (vs. 4.367 million for the premiere). It's A18-49 rating fell to a 1.1 from a 1.5 for the premiere. The "USA strategy of moving dramas off Friday was a success" pronouncement may have been a bit premature.
TNT might have hoped for a big rebound for Leverage, but it was effectively flat. Down 4% in viewers to 2.913 million (from 3.020 million last week). But it got a little boost in its A18-49 ratings to a 0.9 from a 0.8 last week.
Both had a new CSI:NY and Ugly Betty on broadcast as competition this week vs. repeats last week.

Ouch. That even hurts ME.
That does look a little worrisome, but it did still top cable in 18-49 and second in total viewers, and USA can’t complain about that, right?
Hopefully it’ll go back up next week with “A Very Juliet Episode”, which looks really promising. Last night’s ep was one of the funniest, though.
The demo was in line with the summer season average, though, correct?
That’s weird. White Collar was down this week, too.
Psych took a CSI: NY sized hit, I assume.
Not terribly surprised about Psych. I couldn’t make it through the premiere episode, too much relationship stuff.
Wow at that picture above. I hope they got the license number of the truck that ran over Tim.
Last week watched Psych and recorded Leverage.
This week watched Leverage and recorded Psych.
Leverage only repeats once at midnight after initial showing.
Psych repeats a bunch of times over the next week. Maybe people just shifted viewing.
Seems John Cena was the draw last week…
I like White Collar, Burn Notice and Psych (although I think Psych is not nearly as good as it used to be)….however, these shows are repeated quite a lot and available online. So, if I miss their first airing, I know I will likely get to see them soon after. Not sure how this affects the ratings, that is if many folks wait to watch the repeats or watch online?
These last couple of Psych episodes haven’t had the level of quirkiness I have grown to love, and also suffer from a minimum of Carlton and O’Hara, who I think deserve more screen time than they’ve been getting lately.
Captain Crunch for breakfast on those ratings. Ouch! Well, hope the Psych and Leverage fans tune back in and bring them back up. However, with the Olympics coming, new episodes may end up recorded or Hulued (disclaimer: No idea if there are new eps airing all February for these shows, haven’t checked
).
OK, I think the percentage thing is making things seem worse for Leverage than they really are. If a 0.8 was a 20% drop from the week before, that means Leverage got a 1.0 two weeks ago, right? So it’s gone: 1.0, 0.8, 0.9….which sounds much better than “losing 20% then gaining only 0.1″
Holly, you are correct, and I am with you.
P.S. Bill added the word Hitl*r to the spam filter, so one of your earlier comments got caught, I freed it, but, for future reference!
Is USA one of the networks that airs its shows online? Maybe people are watching it online. Not that I’m trying to start a bingo card – I haven’t watched Psych since first season.
Aaah, I was wondering. Thanks, I’ll remember that.
Looks like Psych took a tumble whereas Leverage remained steady, Leverage is the only show on TNT that isn’t dependant on The Closer and is doing similar figures to what it got last season.
Both White Collar and Psych fell from last week with WC against Lost but Psych was only up against CSI: NY which couldn’t have hit its ratings that badly though?
I never miss Leverage. My 10-year-old watches it with me sometimes and loves it. I was disappointed to hear (I think) that there were only two episodes left in this run (you can hardly call it a “season,” or even a “half-season). So soon? Darn.
Robert or Bill, I understand that Gina Bellman, who plays Sophie, is on maternity leave and will return. Do you know if Jeri Ryan will remain involved in the show after Bellman’s return? Hope so…
Wednesday night is tough for me because I watch Psych, Leverage, Ugly Betty and CSI:NY. I can DVR two and watch a third live which unfortunately means one must lose out. Yesterday it was CSI NY and it will probably continue to lose out until leverage ends. I’ll probably just catch up to CSI:NY online.
I can see CSI:NY hurting Psych though. Psych is a comedy version of a crime procedural so it stands to reason that it might share an audience with another albeit dramatic procedural.
I think this is a combination of two things- last week’s Psych premiere episode being dreadfully boring, and the Lost premiere.
Hopefully the numbers will bounce back next week when it’s not facing off against Lost, because I really want Psych to stick around.
I watch Leverage live and catch a repeat of Psych.
USA runs 3-4 repeats, TNT just one.
I bet a lot of USA shows start to see the same declines over time as other cable nets air shows in the same time slot.
I miss the Sunday & Friday time slots.
If this keeps up they will too.
I thought that was one of the best Psych’s yet.
Last week’s Psych was a terrible premiere ep. It offered nothing to the new viewer in terms of what makes the show fun. If they watched for Cena it gave that viewer no reason to come back this week.
Moving shows is always dangerous. Not everyone is fanatic enough to keep up like the readers here! Burn Notice’s number were low when it got moved up earlier and then it went back up when people finally figured it out.
