I’m starting to think that since “hundreds of thousands” of people are without power in the mid-atlantic, and older battery powered TV’s don’t pick up digital signals, it might ruin the whole “keep people home” angle. They might be more liable to go out to watch the game if they are without power.

I still think it will do 100 mil, but not much more.

I dunno about the share, but I have plenty of confidence that it could break the century mark in viewers and be the most watched Super Bowl ever.

And I agree about the bad weather back East being a factor, that was one of the reasons that made Super Bowl XVI (1982) the biggest in audience share ever.

Oh what the hey, it’s gonna be a great game this year. I’ll definitely be glued to the TV.

P.S.-A personal note, I was born on the same day as Super Bowl XXI!

i’ve not looked forward to a SB halftime show since Prince in 2007.

i (surprisingly) liked Springsteen (not a fan of his) last year.

i don’t think just 1 act should be in the halftime show. i remember in 2001 when they had Aerosmith, NSYNC, Mary J Blige, etc etc etc. now i was only like 11 but i didn’t watch football at the time and yet i watched that halftime show OVER AND OVER.

Last years, and the year before both produced games that were exciting right up to the final play. Both produced record numbers. I’d assume that everything else equal viewership would rise year to year, given an increase in NFL interest and US population. With that said I predict a significant drop in average viewership, because most football games, even between two close teams don’t come down to the last play so chances are this game won’t. Every snap after the game has essentially been decided is going to see large drop offs in viewers, effecting the final numbers. 96 million. Plus I don’t know if halftime numbers count but if they do, then I expect more people to flip away from The Who than Prince.

NFL ratings have absolutely soared this year, with the AFC Championship game on CBS drawing 46.9 million, the NFC Championship game on FOX drawing 57.9 million, the Pro Bowl on ESPN drawing 12 million (highest-rated in a decade), and this Wednesday’s Super Bowl’s Greatest Commercials on CBS drawing 11 million (biggest audience ever for that special).

That said, the way NFL TV ratings have trended this season, combined with the Eastern Seaboard probably getting snowed in, I predict this will surpass the M*A*S*H series finale (107.9 million) as the highest-rated program in television history. My prediction: 120 million.

As for the new series “Undercover Boss” that CBS will premiere after the game, I predict it will retain a pretty good portion of the audience. Prediction: 40 million

if theres one thing we know about NFL QB’s and ratings its that Favre and Manning can draw

any SB with either of them is gonna be pretty highly rated so i think if the Vikings would’ve made it it would be a sure 100+ million

but its still Manning. and the Saints are pretty popular. i haven’t watched ANY sports since the championship games but i’m sure ESPN is playing the Katrina card to get sympathy. i’ma still guess its gonna get over 100 million.

RE: who cares?

Well, if you don’t, then so be it. To each their own. However, probably around 100 million people, at the least, will be watching the game, based on historical data. Many more who, for some reason, might not be able to (or will be somewhere they can’t be recorded as a viewer, like a bar) but will have some interest in the outcome.

I’m not going to be watching — I quit watching the NFL a long time ago — but I still maintain a curiosity about the Super Bowl. Given the reasons in this post for positives and negatives on the ratings (and agreeing with all of them), and anticipating a competitive game, I am going to guess 105 million with a 44.3 ratings. Just for fun.
