"Caprica" Drops; Out-Rated By "Swamp Loggers"

In its third week, Caprica dropped again, to 1.128 million viewers and a .4 adults 18-49 rating.  It was out-rated by Discovery's Swamp Loggers (which airs at 10p -- Caprica airs at 9p) which averaged 1.49 million and a .7 rating with adults 18-49.

Caprica’s episode a week ago averaged a .5 rating with adults 18-49 and 1.411 million viewers.  That compares with 1.6 million viewers and a 0.4 adults 18-49 rating for the pilot episode.

I know there are a lot of haters,  but I don't hate Caprica. How could I hate any show that has a main character that hates TV and PR?   I'm also digging the growing rift between Adama and Greystone.

But while Alessandra Torresani may be lovely, these numbers surely are not.

This makes me very sad. What are the chances of SyFy actually sticking it on another day? Certain types of scifi can work on a Friday but it seems like this isn’t one of them.

  2. I really think they were caught in a sticky situation with promoting the show – if you promote it as a BSG spinoff, then you lose viewers who aren’t going to watch it over the BSG connection. But by ignoring the BSG connection entirely in advertising, you may lose the people who would have watched it if they didn’t catch that it was a BSG spinoff?

I’m just disappointed – the show’s really good. I hate to play fan bingo and say “Maybe on a different night?” but, screw it. Fan bingo!

  3. I believe part of the problem is the fault of Syfy programming, not having a good lead-in show before it, showing a repeat of the previous episode at 7pm CT before showing the new episode at 8pm CT.

When should we start to worry? Not sure what is good or bad when it comes to cable-shows

Needs to be renamed as “Cancelled!”

I really wanted to like this show. I watch intently, but just can’t buy into the premise and how they are using a sense of random happenstance to forward the plot.

I’m giving it one more week, but I think that I have pretty much made up my mind that this show is going nowhere, good.

Ronald D. Moore defined the problem, and he thought he was defining the answer. He said that BSG was targeted toward a male audience and they wanted to get away from that with Caprica.

Well, they have succeeded and getting rid of the male audience…

@Melbye – This is bad. Really, really, really bad.

That said Galactica always made a lot of it’s money off Digital and DVD sales. I have to think SyFy is going to try a half season DVD release and see what market exists before killing it. Which in turn means the show will get a full first season no matter what.

But unless the DVD is a blockbuster I can’t see it surviving with these numbers. Which brings up a more interesting question. This is the second traditional SciFi show that’s floundered on the SyFy network this season. So are the shows just bad or has SyFy chased away some of it’s traditional audience?

Question is what numbers Syfy support? I don’t think they are pleased at all.

I’ve watched three episodes now and that’s enough. I’m not watching any more because I think the show is piss-poor. Does that mean I’m “wrong” while people who like it are “right?” Or vice-versa? Of course not. People like different things and that’s fine. But a show can do poorly because most people don’t like it. There’s no conspiracy theory there.

Prequels always seem to have a built in problem and no matter how well done this show is, it’s got the prequel disease. I honestly don’t think moving it to another night is going to help. It’s a well acted and the production values are very nice but it’s dense and relationship and philosophically heavy. That kind of thing sort of screams ‘niche’ show, IMO. Still, it may be a vanity show for the network so it could drop pretty low in the ratings? Is it still getting good reviews?

Maybe they should try pairing it up with BSG reruns? That might make for a good Friday night block.

I’ve watched all three episodes and it’s just not very good (poor characters, dialogue and plot) I won’t be watching any further episodes. And for those that are, with these numbers, enjoy it while you can.

  12. Tom

My problem with the show is that they took the incredibly shallow religious conflict from BSG and made it a (more) major focus of the show without actually giving it any more depth.

  13. SaturnCity

Please don’t tell me I watched BSG in its entirety in the span of one week just for the prequel that piqued my interest in BSG to be canceled. >_< I really do like Caprica. I can't really specify why, I just do. Although I gotta ask: if they were aiming for a female demographic, then why are all of the main characters male? I guess it must just be because Caprica is supposed to be set in a simpler time than BSG, but still…

Ah well. You'd think I'd have gotten used to the fact that any show that I get invested in almost immediately gets canceled. I guess Dollhouse has taught me nothing.

  14. Craig

I was disappointed, was never a fan of the original 1970. Friday use to be must see TV, SyFy or it should go back Sci-Fi. There are other good shows on cable now. I signed up for Sraz so I tried to watch Spartacus, but that show is loosing me the only high point is seeing Lucy Lawless naked. Graphic sex talk and bloody violence are all ready getting old.

  15. SanFranStan

Really sad but I’m not going to lose hope. I never watched BSG or any other SciFi show, but am really loving Caprica so far. My favorite new show.

    *Channeling SGU haters*
Caprica is crap. It’s a soap opera. Where’s the space fights? Six is better than Sister Clarice. Baltar is better than Stoltz’s character. Bill Adama is better than Joseph Adama. Starbuck is better than Zoe…

  17. Shea

I love Caprica! such a great show and a great prequel to BSG. I hope they at least do this entire season well because syfy has already given them the full season pickup. I hope it ends well too – not with some cliffhanger that they won’t be able to finish

  18. Shea

And remember, caprica is a cheap show to produce for syfy so i guess that it has that going for it. It also probably gets huge dvr playback, online viewing, etc. where are the pilot dvr numbers??!

  19. Shea, what would give you the idea that Caprica is a cheap show for Syfy to produce?

Ghost Hunters is a cheap show for Syfy to produce, by comparsion Carprica is really, really, really expensive.

  20. Marc

    Hey Robert,

Doesn’t it seem like the cheaper shows do better on SyFy than the more expensive ones? Isn’t that kinda interesting? lol.
