The Wrap reports that Stern confirmed an earlier report of theirs on air this morning:

Howard Stern told his satellite radio listeners on Monday that he is considering leaving Sirius – and radio altogether -- to become a judge on “American Idol.”

Stern confirmed a report that Fox is interested in hiring the Sirius shock jock to replace Simon Cowell on the reality show.

“There’s not a better job on the planet than judging that f---ing karaoke contest,” Stern said.

  1. Not sure why FOX is trying to kill their highest rated show.

  2. Allen

    American Idol jumps the shark yet again.

  3. Jay

    The fact that they are even considering him disturbs me. This is blatantly their “jumping the shark” moment. What, are they just trying to find the most rude a crass person in the world to replace Simon? Simon may be a jerk, but at least he’s still likable and knows his stuff. Howard is just a jerk who uses says outrageous crap to get attention.

  4. I wish he would.

  5. I too wish he would because it would be the death of Idol = further NCIS domination.

  6. Rob C

    LOL…I don’t watch this show now. I’d watch it to see Howard rip into the talented and untalented.

  7. Mark

    I just can’t see this happening. I’m sure FOX is considering all kinds of different options, and Stern is probably one of them. Hiring Stern would be a good move *after* the ratings start tanking, because it would get people interesting in the show. But as long as Idol is still the #1 show on television, it would be way too risky.

  8. Terry

    isnt this a singing competition??? He doesnt sing and has no place on idol!!

  9. Ruby

    @Terry, neither does Ellen Degeneres.

  10. I would sooner call it a “reality show molded by FOX to produce the best ratings” than a “singing competition”.

  11. Johnny

    This has to be a publicity stunt. Stern on network television? Come on gang, get real. Fox always pulls some kind of stunt like this to pump up the ratings and people always buy it. Wake up.

  12. How would people thinking that Stern was coming pump up ratings at all…

  13. Trent

    @Acey Stern has an enormous following. People would watch AI to see him.

  14. Yes Trent, obviously, but I think Johnny is suggesting that FOX won’t go through with it and this is just a stunt. What I’m saying is ‘hinting’ that Stern is coming without actually doing it will not really affect ratings.

  15. Jennifer

    @Trent

    Stern does have an enormous following for radio, but his following is not anywhere near as big as the following American Idol currently has without him. Does Fox really want to risk potentially alienating a portion of it’s 20+ million viewers because 1 million Stern fans (at the most), might tune in just for him?

  16. Johnny

    Controversy=ratings. Any publicity is good publicity. They teach this kinda stuff on the first day in public relations 101.

  17. Jay

    Think of the people who will stop watching if Howard comes (me being one of them).

    As crazy as it sounds, some people actually do take the competition seriously. It’s clear he doesn’t give a damn about the show in his comments, and the followers he may bring to the show probably don’t either (or else they would have already been watching). It’ll ruin the show

  18. Trent

    @Jennifer

    Stern has much more than 1 million listeners. I have read that it is about 5 million people.

  19. That’s fine and dandy. The real question is whatever portion of that 5 million that decides to watch him, is it greater than the millions that will stop watching because of him?

  20. Jack

    Say goodbye to Idol.
