SUPER-SIZED Smallville SCORES SUPER FRIDAY RATINGS
FOR THE CW
Two-Hour Smallville Powers The CW to its Best Friday Night Since Sept. 2008
Smallville Delivers Largest Audience of The Season
February 8, 2009 (Burbank, CA) – The special two-hour Smallville telecast (“Absolute Justice”) powered The CW to its best Friday night performance since September 2008 in all key categories, including adults 18-49 (1.2/4), men 18-49 (1.5/5), adults 18-34 (1.1/4), men 18-34 (1.3/5) and total viewers (2.8mil), according to preliminary live plus same day Nielsen ratings for Friday, Feb. 5, 2009.
Friday’s two-hour Smallville was the show’s highest rated telecast of the season in total viewers, adults 18-49 (tie) and men 18-49.
Smallville built in the second hour by 10% in adults 18-34, 17% in men 18-34, 18% in adults 18-49, 14% in men 18-49 and 14% in total viewers.
Competitively, Smallville ranked first on Friday night among men 18-49 and ranked second among men 18-34.

GOOOOO Smallville! It really was a fantastic movie!
Fact: The ratings build up on the second half… Who made its appearance on the second half?
The Intreprid Reporter Lois Lane…
Lois makes an appearance.. The ratings go bigger… Hence, Lois Lane should appear in every episode to keep good ratings…
Food for thought
Glad to see Smallville do well. Fridays need Smallville and a new series together so that the CW can build Fridays again. Smallville deserves one more season to close the series out properly.
I think the massive snowstorm in the East affected the ratings. The numbers would have been even better if there weren’t power outages. It was a great show, but I don’t think Lois had anything to do with the ratings. Clark and the other heroes brought in the viewers, including a lot of people who never watch the show normally, according to posts on other sites.
AWE HELL YEAH! HELL FREAKIN YEAH! SMALLVILLE RULES!!
“Lois makes an appearance.. The ratings go bigger… Hence, Lois Lane should appear in every episode to keep good ratings…”
Don’t worry
..! Last season she was in 12 episodes or something low like that.. this season she was contracted for 18! She’s only going to miss 4..! Resulting in better SV ratings
!
One can certainly argue that the weather would have some impact, but one also has to realize that while some homes did lose power, far more people probably had power and stayed inside instead of going out for entertainment.
As it stands it was nice to see a bump in viewers and in adults 18-49 (both season highs), but it fell below season average in adults 18-34 and women 18-34. Which are the two primary demos that the CW targets (and I don’t belong to either).
Since the first use of GA, the first use of the JL, the first use of the Legion (for example) all showed growth in viewers, adults 18-49 and adults 18-34) I was surprised that we didn’t see across the board growth.
Oh well, it is good that the show grew into its 2nd hour.
Sorry I wasn’t clear. I meant that with such severe storms I am sure many people who would have normally gone out stayed home instead of taking their chances with the weather, this should offset the much smaller number of people who actually lost power.
@Floru and @Smallville #1 Fan
Guess who else made an appearance in the 2nd half…Martian Manhunter. Please don’t blow out hot water if you don’t have the verifiable proof.
That’s wishful thinking on your part.
With all the hype leading up to the event, I was surprised at the realitively small increase, plus, all those numbers about men are exactly NOT what the CW wants in viewership.
CW has already indicated it’s current “young women” demo seeking needs expanding, and w/ Smallville’s great demo being men, it needs this show to expand that base. Otherwise, it loses men entirely.
Bring on Season 10 and a higher budget please!
In respons to Yeah right! I was actually with you there. It reminded me if excitement I had at the season of 24 where Tony comes to Jack’s rescue when he’s pinned down. Everyone knows how a story arc progresses and the suspense and action get hotter as time ticks over. For me, the highlight was J’onn’s return and Oliver getting smacked down by Hawkman. The absolute squee coming when I realized that Dr. Fate had given him his powers back. I feel that Smallville did it to themselves when they included so many strong secondary characters. Instead of Clark becoming the focus for me, I hang out for Green Arrow and Justice League stories
It’s sad but true for me.
