Still waiting for the national viewer totals, but Sunday’s NHL contest on NBC featuring the Pittsburgh Penguins vs. the Washington Capitals (and Sidney Crosby vs. Alex Ovechkin) tied a season high rating for NBC (excluding the outdoor game at Feneway Park on New Year’s day) for an NHL game.

I know those numbers don’t sound like much but our friend Ted Leonsis is doing his part in turning Washington, D.C. into a hockey town.  The local ratings in D.C. for Sunday’s game were much higher, drawing a a 5.3 local rating in the DC market.  How impressive is that for a regular season game?  Consider that:

it’s the same rating NBC drew for Game 1 of the Pens-Caps in second-round playoff series a year ago. And it’s massively higher than the D.C. rating NBC got for the Caps’ only regular season network appearance a year ago, a 1.9 for another meeting with Pittsburgh.
