The CW has announced early renewals for the 2010-2011 season.

Supernatural returns!  Gossip Girl and 90210 too.  Of course the Vampire Diaries was renewed and American's Next Top Model will return too.

This leaves Smallville -- which I think probably merely comes down whether Tom Welling wants to do the show -- One Tree Hill, Melrose Place and Life Unexpected.  I'd guess One Tree Hill is very likely to be renewed.

Melrose Place is definitely not going to return and based on the last few weeks of ratings I worry that Life Unexpected is shaping up to be another Privileged.  A show critics and the network like that has difficulty gaining any traction with viewers.  At this point the best hope for Life Unexpected (besides a pick up in the ratings) is probably a very weak development season for CW.

Here's the official press release:

THE CW ANNOUNCES EARLY PICKUPS FOR FIVE SERIES

Freshman Hit “The Vampire Diaries,” “Gossip Girl,” “90210,” “Supernatural” and “America’s Next Top Model” To Return Next Season

February 16, 2010 (Burbank, California) ? The CW Network has given early pickups to five series for next season, including four signature dramas and the reality hit AMERICA’S Next Top Model.  All five shows will return in Fall 2010.

The series receiving early renewals include this season’s breakout hit THE Vampire Diaries, The CW’s most-watched show (4.6 million viewers) and the network’s number one show among adults 18-34 (2.5/8).  THE Vampire Diaries premiere generated the largest audience in network history for a series debut (5.7 million total viewers).  THE Vampire Diaries has improved The CW’s performance Thursday at 8:00 p.m. by 114% among women 18-34 this season.  The network also renewed fan favorite SUPERNATURAL, which will enter its sixth season next year.   SUPERNATURAL has one of the most loyal audiences of any show on television and does heroic work in a perennially tough time period.  It has improved over last season among women and adults 18-34 (29% and 8%, respectively) this season, a remarkable accomplishment for a fifth-year show.

Also given early pickups for next season are The CW’s Monday night sensation Gossip Girl, which is The CW’s number one show among its target demographic of women 18-34, and Tuesday’s trend-setting drama, 90210, which sees some of TV’s largest percent increases from DVR playback, nearly doubling its women 18-34 live-only ratings once live+7 data is included.  Wednesday anchor AMERICA’S Next Top Model will also be back for cycles 15 and 16 with superstar Tyra Banks and new groups of aspiring models.  Top Model continues to rank second in the competitive Wednesday 8:00 p.m. hour among young women 18-34 (3.4/10).

I knew once I heard “critically acclaimed” that Life Unexpected was in trouble.

It was my understanding that Tom Welling had signed through season ten last year, but maybe I heard wrong. Whatever the hold-up is, I hope it’s resolved soon so they can announce Smallville’s renewal and the writers, actors, and millions of fans worldwide can begin looking forward instead of living in stand-by mode. Note to Dawn: Pay Tom whatever he wants. He’s worth every penny!

I hope Smallville gets renewed simply because they have introduced Amanda Waller and the idea that Darkseid might be coming. The combo of Amanda’s suicide squad and Darkseid is nothing but awesomeness.

“90210″ is a surprise, most people had that show as dead for next season. I personally think it’s awful, don’t know why people watch it.

Good for Supernatural, it’s not a bad show.

    I. Am. Fuming.

  6. 90210 is not a surprise. At all. :-)

  7. Smallville #1 Fan

This is horrible.. Smallville better get renewed! It’s the best show on the CW!!

  8. Stefan

    I thought that 90210 was a goner… weird.
Smallville will run for another season, just so they can push it up to ten. I think OTH will also get another one, and LU will probably be picked up for midseason. Melrose Place is DONE!

  9. Tricia

OTH should be renewed . . . it outperforms Gossip Girl and 90210 and the main actors are already signed on for another year.

  10. Dario

YAY! Great news for SNL fans!

  11. Rob K.

I really love “Melrose Place” and hope there’s a miracle and it gets picked up for a second season.

  12. Mel

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!!! Supernatural season six!!!!!!!!!! :) Not a surprise about Vampire Diaries!!!

  13. Samuel

Ah crap, I never though I would say that… But I hoped for Supernatural ending this season. I just hope they won’t screwed up hunting god or some alien race…

If it sucks I guess I’ll just forget season 6 ever existed ^^

  14. Jenny

I don’t really understand stand why “One Tree Hill” is likely to be renewed when the ratings are really down also, and they have to make budget cuts and cut more cast members. Not to mention they still have some contracts to sign.

  15. Josh

COME ONE OTH!!! i really want an 8th season! im not ready for it too end yet!!

  16. Jenny, because its still a relatively strong performer on the CW.

  17. betty

    Please save OTH.

The seventh season has been really good, but the CW doesn’t promote it at all.

It outperforms hyped shows like 90210 and Gossip Girl, with a fraction of the promo/hype.

Please give us one more season!

  18. Jenny

“The seventh season has been really good, but the CW doesn’t promote it at all.”- That’s kind of an exaggeration. I think it’s been promoted more this season more then any other season.

  19. John A

OTH has been so much better this season than the last one. I hope it isnt axed. I still remember when it was almost axed at the end of season 3 and now were talking about a season 8.

  20. DuMont

Count me as surprised that The CW has re-upped ‘90210?, but left the fate of ‘Smallville’ and ‘One Tree Hill’ hanging. ‘90210’s original episode numbers have been weak this season, and its encore Nielsens have been downright miserable. Based on the ‘Life Unexpected’ Nielsens so far, especially those strong Wednesday encore numbers, I’d probably give it an early renewal too.

The ‘90210? renewal must be linked to recent cast reductions and budget cuts, together with an effort by CBS-Paramount towards getting a critical mass of episodes filmed for syndication sale…with next season, ‘90210? should be nearing the 70-episode mark, good enough for 12 weeks of daily stripping.

At this point, ‘Melrose Place’ needs a veritable Nielsen miracle to get its second season renewal papers.
