American Idol has a six year winning streak on the line.  It hasn't lost a single half hour to any of its competition since 2004.  Looks like the streak is safe.  Based on preliminary metered market data (always subject to change) Idol won every half hour last night too:

household rating/share

American Idol (Fox)
8:00 p.m.: 14.1/21 (#1)
8:30 p.m.: 15.6/22 (#1)
9:00 p.m.: 15.6/22 (#1)
9:30 p.m.: 15.3/21 (#1)
--
Vancouver Olympic Winter Games (NBC)
8:00 p.m.: 12.5/18 (#2)
8:30 p.m.: 13.9/20 (#2)
9:00 p.m.: 14.9/21 (#2)
9:30 p.m.: 15.1/21 (#2)
10:00 p.m.: 15.5/24 (#1)
10:30 p.m.: 14.6/24 (#1)

It is possible that in that last half hour (9:30p) that Olympics will wind up edging out Idol in viewers, but I'd expect it to win every half hour in the demos.

We'lll award a bronze medal to Lost, at least in the metered market numbers it only dipped 8% (to a 6.7/ 9 household rating/share).

Check back later to see the viewer averages and 18-49 breakout.

American Idol deserves a gold for extending a 30 minute episode to 2 hours.

  2. Oh wow. Good for Idol!

  3. Lisa

AI, Olympics, and Lost seem to all have done well, then.

I was watching AI. I checked out the Olympics during commercials, but it looked as if they had hardly any finals going on, and I just wasn’t interested enough to watch non-finals of events that don’t really grab me anyway. They reran the figure skating short program later that night, and I caught it then.

  4. Not bad Olympics. Great still for Idol

here are my reviews of the show and grades for the 7 who made it through:

lol frank..U are right …i was like wow this isnt gonna take long to get through but it took forever!!

  6. As expected. In the demo, American Idol is a 9-10.0 show. The Olympics barely managed 8.0 for the opening. I don’t know why this was expected to be a contest.

    @Acey so true

I admit to gotten caught up in the Olympics hype or lack of it this year and thought it might translate to higher viewing. Wrong again.

I give Idol credit. They still dominate

  8. Frank

With Lindsey Vonn and Apollo Ohno competing on Wednesday, Id fully expect the Winter Olympics to beat American Idol.

  9. Voltron

Great, then all those people got to see American Idol give the boot to Shelby, that hot girl who can sing, simply because of her facial paralysis. Real classy Idol. I could almost hear Simon say, “I’ll see you on X-Factor my dear …”

  10. HogWash

Ladies figureskating is on next Tuesday (short program). That will be the test next Tuesday.

  11. Val

@Hogwash I believe the figure skating will do well but there aren’t any big names this year and no americans really in the hunt for a gold medal. A Katarina Witt or Michelle Kwan is sorely missing. Personally I think I am going to enjoy the competition more as a result but that’s not what brings viewers in. By the way, the men had 3 legit American contenders plus Pleshenko and didn’t beat Idol. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

  12. The Daw

Shelby was terrible….sounded unbelievably bad on “More Than a Feeling.” As if she’s never heard the song before.

And, to be honest, wasn’t a fan of her “slutting it up” once she got to Hollywood. I didn’t think the facial paralysis should matter, but she came across as a likable underdog in the auditions—by Hollywood time, she was a “dime a dozen” girl who goes overboard with her makeup.

  13. Frank

Lindsey Vonn and Apollo Ohno will bring in viewers tonight.

  14. WLou

I don’t watch the show, but in the pic of the cast, above, doesn’t Ellen look squirmy while Simon looks like he’s being forced to put his arm around Ellen?

  15. Val

So when Fox has “The X Factor” and “Idol” both airing next year one in the fall and one in the spring, who’s going to beat Fox? It’s unreal the viewers these shows still attract. And for people saying the Olympics will beat them next week due to skating, isn’t next week also when the viewers start voting? I suspect viewing will go up not down. And trust me I am no Idol fan.
