Updated:Heroes, Vampire Diaries, Smallville and Fringe See Largest DVR Increases For Wk of Jan. 31

Update: perhaps since it was marked "Special" because it aired at 8pm rather than 9pm, the Live+7 data for Dollhouse was not included in the data we received (so Dollhouse isn't included anywhere below!).  I'll see if  I can track the data down.

Update 2: I got some data on Dollhouse's finale, but it's all rounded to one decimal place so I can't really compare it to the other data here in terms of percentage gains.   But it went from 2.2 million L+SD to 2.6 million L+7 and 18-49 went from a .9 to a 1.1.

American Idol was (by far and away) still the most watched show when a week's worth of DVR viewing was factored in for the week ending January 31.

There's a lot of data I'm interested in when it comes to the DVR numbers, but I have tried to keep these tables very simple and ignore most of it.  The first table is just that week's top 25 when sorted by Live+7 viewers.

The second table is the percentage increase to the Live+SD Adults 18-49 rating, and the last table is the shows with the higher percentage increase to overall viewing when comparing Live+7 to Live+SD viewing.

Heroes, Vampire Diaries and Smallville topped both the second and third tables, but take heed; last year Dollhouse always topped those results.  Shows with low viewing to begin with always fare better in those tables, which makes the numbers for Medium and Fringe much more impressive and interesting to me though I'm sure Heroes, Vampire Diaries and Smallville fans will see it differently!

Chuck is indeed stronger than Heroes.

  2. Christopher

Dvrs are not help all these shows are only killing them all

  3. Jack

If those CHUCK Nielsen viewers actually tuned in live the show would already have been picked up by NBC for a full season.

  4. Yes, thank you for bringing back viewers instead of just 18-49!

Also, the numbers are back in general!

  5. Alex

yay for Heroes. If actually means anything good for it lol.

  6. Corey

Arg…a 3.04 next to Chuck’s overnights would make me a very happy man. Too bad that’ll never happen. But I’m still cautiously optimistic in a fourth season. We’ll have to wait and see what the ratings look like for the March 1 show, though.

Please NBC, put on some major Chuck promotion in the last couple days of the Olympics! It’s the first prime time show back, and I’m already sick of Parenthood.

Networks need to find a way to work with DVRs, not punish the shows that are strong in DVR numbers. All viewers should count in the final tally, not be punished for how/when they watch certain shows. There has to be a way to incorporate the technology with advertising, not fight against each other. Go Smallville!

  8. MapleLeafer

Castle is way stronger in DVR at 12+ million viewers.

  9. Smallville's best fan

    HAHA SMALLVILLE IS DOING INCREDIBLE!

Smallville is the best show on the CW! SMALLVILLE FTW

  10. Holly

    @mgbhighlander,

The real issue isn’t whether the networks like DVRs, they would love to count every single viewer. The issue is whether the advertisers are willing to pay for those viewers. The standard the nets and advertisers agreed on was the C3 rating which is all commercial viewing within 3 days of the original airing. That means a Nielsen viewer who watches the next day without fastforwarding through the commercials is worth as much to the net as someone who watches it live. Of course, with the exception of product placement deals, no advertiser wants to pay for viewers who skip the commercials (live or recorded) so not all DVR viewers are worth extra for the net. We don’t usually see the C3 ratings here (those who pay for them do), but when we have seen them they were roughly equal to the Live+SD numbers we see daily.

    Dear Robert Seidman..

I’m really sorry to sound like a jerk.. but could we please have a more exciting picture of Smallville? Clark and Chloe are a bit dull.. lol.. How about an exciting picture of Clark fighting Metallo, or Clark wearing the superman symbol (non photoshopped).. or Clark using his laser vision on metallo..

    From Smallvilles #1 Fan

  12. Jenny

Good for Life Unexpected for even being on that second list when the same episode airs later in the week.

  13. Smallville's best fan

    Dear Robert Seidman..

But I am extremely thankful that you chose to put a picture of Smallville on the front cover page.. very thankful!

    From Smallville #1 Fan

  14. Nathan

You “Smallville” fans are pushy! As someone who tried to like the show but just couldn’t find a way to do it, I’d say Chloe is the best thing “Smallville” has going for it. Robert is doing the show a favor by using her image for this story!

  15. Smallville's best fan

Nathan.. come on .. would you rather have Chloe and Clark in the Daily Planet.. or

Clark using his super-breath blowing a ton of sand off of the Superman symbol… or Clark with red eyes after using heat vision.. or Clark doing a superjump.. or Clark wearing his Superman Symbol..?

  16. good grief

looks like fringe will get at least a partial renewal unless it completely collapses when it comes back from hiatus

  17. Empire

Glad to see Fringe, Numb3rs, and Life Unexpected as go up. Even more surprised since Lux has a repeat two days later. Hopefully CBS will keep Numb3rs around for one more year. As for Fringe it’s already a given, especially if the ratings stay or go above the last 3 episodes.

  18. Lily

Nathan, sorry to disagree with ya but Chloe is what’s holding Smallville back. And yeah Smallville’s Best Fan… I agree. I’d rather a picture of Clark doing something “super” than Chloe following Clark around the Daily Planet any day. Sorry.

  19. Who Knows?

Fringe retains more of the Bones audience with the new numbers added in (79% versus 73%). Hmmm, maybe that should factor into the renewal discussion?

Smallville is a rock star! It is on Friday nights (the death night) and it is crushing OTH and just trailing behind former partner, Supernatural without a fancy, shmancy Vampire Diaries lead-in!

  20. @good grief I fail to see how the fact that people are fast forwarding through commercials in Fringe will lead to its renewal.
