Leverage Season Finale Up a Bit; Psych Down vs. Olympics

Last night's season finale of Leverage averaged 2.85 million viewers and a 0.9 adults 18-49 rating. That's up only slightly from last week's 2.78 million and 0.8 rating with adults 18-49, but the season finale squared off against the Olympics.

It's choppy waters for USA's Psych with up and down weeks. Two week's ago was a down week, but a week ago Psych rebounded nicely to a 1.3 rating with adults 18-49 and 3.573 million viewers. Last night, against the Olympics on the NBC mother ship, Psych averaged a 1.0 rating with adults 18-49 and 2.935 million viewers.

Psych is such a great show but seems to be having some bad luck, opening the season opposite obama, now the olympics — do people even know it’s on wed — I often forget, thanks to dvr. Love this show!

I think part of the problem with these summer cable shows is they fall into the “pleasant diversion” category. So they do great during the summer when normal TV has taken the month off and everyone’s in a more relaxed mood. But they tank (or go wildly up and down) against serious competition.

I enjoy Psych, but it’s not appointment viewing for me. I simply watch it a day or two after it shows up in my TiVo’s Now Playing List. I don’t know if it gets recorded from the first airing or from a subsequent one. It rarely gets watched on the day it airs, because it doesn’t come on until 11 pm in the Mountain Time Zone, which is 10pm Pacific for the Pacific feed of USA.

Gosh if you look at the pattern it has been Psych up and Leverage down the first week of Psych; and then the next week they switched; and then they switched again; and so on for the weeks they have overlapped. Next week Leverage is not going to be a factor so Psych will be up. As mentioned before and above Psych is on so many times you can pick and choose when to watch.

I’m not worried about either. I think both shows will fluctuate based on the relative stregnth of the competition. Leverage and Psych would seem to have similar audiences to me and quite a few probably watch CSI NY as well. So depending on whether Leverage or Psych has the more compelling storyline people will watch one live and record the other. Season finale’s always take precedence for me so I watched Leverage and recorded Psych. When the season finale rolls around it will get my undivided attention too.

    has Leverage been renewed?

seems like leverage has been pretty much flat through out this run i think tnt have to be happy. It should and will hopefully rise during the summer for season 3.

  8. Rich, yes. new season starts this summer.

I think Psych held up relatively well against the Olympics. It was a great ep, though.

I do not like alot of shows that is on TV but I love Leaverage and is happy about the rating.

Jackie the Joke Man’s star power is obviously responsible for the ratings bump.

Tom – I think you’re right, shows like Psych perform much better in the summer. Thankfully Psych has already been renewed for a fifth season, so these small dips like this aren’t really a big threat for the show, as long as it doesn’t become a regular thing.

Great epsiode this week for Psych. We had to rewind the DVR a few times because we were laughing so hard or one of missed a great line. BUT, we are a DVR family, always watch it the next day… (Not a nielson family, so it doesn’t matter, does it?)

Leverage seems to have stayed relatively the same the past few weeks – roughly the 2.7-2.9 million range. Sad to see Psych down though, the show is back on track and I thought the episode deserved more eyeballs. Of course a lot of shows are down because of the Olympics.

It will be interesting to see what Psych’s ratings are the next three weeks. Next week they will have the Olympics to deal with but no Leverage. Maybe the move to Wednesday really did hurt after all.

As ive been told PSAC…no it doesn’t matter if you’re not a nielsen household. I enjoy both Leverage and Psyche. Last nights Leverage was very good. It did a season finale justice. I thought it had a movie like ending, good drama. Psyche always funny in my opinion. Some disagree but I like the fact that it has become a bit more serious. Seems more balanced to me.

  16. Leverage seems to have broken that “Anyone rich is evil” mindset. I watched last night’s episode and found another problem: I think the writing is falling apart.

I love the concept of this show, but if this were Burn Notice (a similar, life-problem-solving show) it would have been simpler and a single episode. Worse yet, logic holes show up, not the least of which being an FBI agent that acts like it’s her first day at Krispy Creme. (No one goes into the field, alone, leading a team, when they’re THAT unprepared!)

I’ve enjoyed a few of the episodes, and I’m a fan of the genre; as long as they get away from the liberal harping and make stories that hold water, I’m onboard. I really like several of the characters. But I suggest that if this show fails, it’s because of the writing, and nothing else.

  17. JDF

I have to agree. While I love some of the episodes of Leverage and like the others, the writing is very weak and the point about the FBI Team Leader is right on. Also, Interpol works at the INVITATION of the host countries – the protrayal of Sterling ordering the FBI around is flat out wrong.

  18. Psych is IMO USA’s best show since Monk is gone, and I watch it every wed. but i can see where people dont really need to if something else is on since USA repeats it so much.
