iPhone "Version" Of Our Site Turned Off, For Now

Update: the iPhone version has been re-enabled.  The issue with the attempts to view the site in normal mode not working should now be fixed.

Original post:

After getting a few questions about it, I wanted to let iPhone users know that we've turned off the special iPhone "version" of the site (actually a special WordPress theme), at least temporarily, as an experiment.

We added the special iPhone theme last fall and there's certainly a lot to like about it, but we know that many of our tables are too wide to be seen in that theme (and there is little we can do to make the biggest tables smaller). We figured that since users had the option to turn the iPhone theme off, that was OK.

However, recently, we've had a number of reports that the turning off doesn't alway work properly. That, plus the fact that our site visits from iPhones fell from 30,000+ in October (pre-iPhone theme), to about 3,000 in the past month, caused us turn off the iPhone theme, again, at least temporarily, to gauge the effect. Stay tuned.

Yeah I hated it, and kept switching to regular version all the time.

I loved it. The only thing I didn’t like was the table thing.

It was annoying. Most of the charts you put up would have the last column cut off (even in landscape mode). I almost always ended up turning it off.

I preferred the mobile site. Reading the posts and comments was a lot easier. Yeah, the tables were cut off, but I really needed to see the table data, I could load the full website.

I can see pros and cons to both so I support whatever your final decision will be. I liked the quick glace capabilities with the iPhone app. It’s sometimes challenging to move through the regular view but when you want your TVBTN’s, you’ll do whatever it takes to get it.

  13. I would’ve ultimately deferred to the data regardless of what the “vocal” crowd had to say, which is a good thing since even the vocal crowd seems fairly evenly split.

Please bring back the iPhone version. The table is not that a big problem. I just hold my iPhone horizontally to view the whole table. Sometimes it’s enough but when not, I just copy the whole table and paste it to notepad.

The iPhone version is fantastic. It takes too much effort to read the site without it.
