"24" Canceled?

Multiple sources are reporting that anonymous parties in the know at Fox have decided not to renew 24 for a ninth day and that an official announcement could come any day now.  Given the comments from NBC's Angela Bromstad last week indicating that NBC had already been talking about whether to pick up 24 should Fox pass, it doesn't come as a big surprise that Fox is tipping its hand.

Increasingly high production costs and diminishing ratings are cited as reasons the show will end its run on Fox.   Fox's studio will surely try to shop 24 and  a distressed NBC is likely the only network that would give it any serious consideration.   Ultimately, I can't see NBC wanting to pay a high price for a show long in tooth that already isn't getting great ratings. But you never know.

If not, there's always the prospect of movies.

i agree, dinosaur. it’s the least they can do. this show deserves to be given one season advanced notice so they can go out with a bang. they don’t deserve cancelation when they’re closing in on the end of the season in terms of filming.

It’s time for 24 to end its era on television and transition to a movie franchise.

I don’t get why they didn’t give 24 time to do a proper finale, like ABC did with Lost.
    Show some respect Fox!

I think Fox is making a mistake. Expensive or not- Fox hasn’t had much success recently creating new shows with as loyal of a following as 24. A season 9 of 24 still would out perform many of Fox’s new shows, not to mention DVD sales, etc.

  16. grr_argh, I’d agree, especially for shows that are past five or six seasons. The problem of course is we never see actual production costs. I don’t necessarily know that precludes some sort of “long in tooth” ratings discounting, but it might be extremely difficult to that accurately in a formulaic way.

They should do a series of 24 movies for ’24′. Have Eddie Murphy join up as a sidekick in the second one.
