To each his own. I'm a huge fan of Simon Baker and The Mentalist crew, but watching over 100 episodes of CM I love all of their characters in their own right. Can't wait for April 7 to see the CM2 cast, but at the same time I don't know how 2 of these shows will do on the network.

You feel CM is badly written and casted? It might not be everyone's cup of tea and that is understandable, but it is very well written and the casting is fantastic, hence the show building in viewership since 2005 while many other shows have been unable to accomplish that.

@Acey

There's no accounting for the (lack of) taste of Nielsen families (how else would you explain the success of Deal or No Deal...or even how double-digit millions tune in to watch a drawn-out, overhyped results show of American Idol each week)?

The episodes of Criminal Minds that I've watched have all had subpar writing and wooden acting...maybe I'm biased because I've got Mandy Patinkin issues (and yes, I realize he's off the show now -- and no, I haven't seen any post-Gideon episodes). Joe Mantegna is a fantastic actor on his own merits, and A.J. Cook is also a wonderful actress (although CM hasn't given her much to work with, from what I've seen, and she deserves better)...they could probably cast my favorite actors in new roles on the show and I still probably wouldn't watch. I don't mind the darkness or the graphic imagery...it's just that the writing and concept is bland, and there are no interesting characters to keep me hooked (the Garcia character is clearly a poor woman's Abby Sciuto).

Maybe I'd give CM a second look if they added some top-tier characters with personality. But from what I've seen, the show so far would be a waste of my time. As far as criminal investigative (scripted) series go, Criminal Minds pales in comparison to others on the schedule, even within the CBS family...give me NCIS, Medium, Numb3rs, or The Mentalist anyday, instead!

It would be a tragedy if Gary Unmarried is renewed and Old Christine is cancelled. Gary Unmarried is possibly the worst comedy on television!

In My honnest opinion I don't think they should start new shows on Sunday nights on CBS 3 Rivers never had a chance this year becaseu of net work overruns of sport events. My wife and I both thought it was a very good show. We are also Cold Case fans and think that show was screwed in the over runs as well.

I pretty much feel the same way about Criminal Minds

You feel CM is badly written and casted? It might not be everyone's cup of tea and that is understandable, but it is very well written and the casting is fantastic, hence the show building in viewership since 2005 while many other shows have been unable to accomplish that.

Dan,

I think I'm pretty close too, unless they swap The Good Wife and Hawaii Five-O slots based on my sample schedule. I'd have to dig up the link, but ABC execs have apparently left open the possibility of picking up Old Christine yet once AGAIN, if CBS cancels it in May.

If ABC doesn't want to pair Old Christine with its single-camera comedies on Wednesday, the other option is for ABC to schedule Old Christine on Tuesday at 9 with Dancing With The Stars as its lead-in, and pair it with a new comedy at 9:30 to establish a one-hour comedy block on Tuesday night.

I haven't given a lot of thought to the fall schedules on the other networks (and I'm less familiar with their pilot development), but I don't think a CBS thread is the appropriate place for me to begin posting sample schedules for ABC/NBC/Fox/CW.

I still think CBS will keep its NCIS/NCIS:LA pairing on Tuesday, its CM/CSI:NY pairing on Wednesday, its Mentalist/CSI pairing on Thursday, and its GW/Medium pairing on Friday...CBS has a pretty good thing going overall (compared to the other networks) and I don't think they'll end up tinkering where it's not absolutely critical for them to do so.

RE: Undercover Boss...

I'm not sure why people here are so certain that Undercover Boss will air from September to May as a full-season (22 episodes or more) show. Both Survivor and The Amazing Race air in uninterrupted chunks throughout the season, so although Undercover Boss does stand-alone episodes I'd expect CBS to schedule it similarly. The other issue, as some people pointed out here, is that now the American public is aware of the Undercover Boss template so the producers will have to come up with some new twist to keep it fresh to prevent the covert CEOs from being prematurely exposed. Joe Millionaire had that problem, and didn't make it past its second season. Even the show True Beauty, which is returning on ABC this summer, has to trick its Season 2 participants into thinking they're on a totally different show in order to retain the element of surprise/ambush.

Personally, I think Rules of Engagement is one of the worst-written, most badly-casted shows on television...so in my heart I'm gleefully rooting for its demise, even though my head tells me differently. I pretty much feel the same way about Criminal Minds...the difference being that (objectively speaking) CM is clearly a much bigger hit for CBS than RoE is.

Dan,

I think I’m pretty close too, unless they swap The Good Wife and Hawaii Five-O slots based on my sample schedule. I’d have to dig up the link, but ABC execs have apparently left open the possibility of picking up Old Christine yet once AGAIN, if CBS cancels it in May.

If ABC doesn’t want to pair Old Christine with its single-camera comedies on Wednesday, the other option is for ABC to schedule Old Christine on Tuesday at 9 with Dancing With The Stars as its lead-in, and pair it with a new comedy at 9:30 to establish a one-hour comedy block on Tuesday night.

I haven’t given a lot of thought to the fall schedules on the other networks (and I’m less familiar with their pilot development), but I don’t think a CBS thread is the appropriate place for me to begin posting sample schedules for ABC/NBC/Fox/CW.

I still think CBS will keep its NCIS/NCIS:LA pairing on Tuesday, its CM/CSI:NY pairing on Wednesday, its Mentalist/CSI pairing on Thursday, and its GW/Medium pairing on Friday…CBS has a pretty good thing going overall (compared to the other networks) and I don’t think they’ll end up tinkering where it’s not absolutely critical for them to do so.

RE: Undercover Boss…

I’m not sure why people here are so certain that Undercover Boss will air from September to May as a full-season (22 episodes or more) show. Both Survivor and The Amazing Race air in uninterrupted chunks throughout the season, so although Undercover Boss does stand-alone episodes I’d expect CBS to schedule it similarly. The other issue, as some people pointed out here, is that now the American public is aware of the Undercover Boss template so the producers will have to come up with some new twist to keep it fresh to prevent the covert CEOs from being prematurely exposed. Joe Millionaire had that problem, and didn’t make it past its second season.
@Stefan

Thanks for clearing that up... I wasn't sure what was going on with Three Rivers, although I knew it was cancelled for a while.

I am obviously failry new to TVBTN/CBS forum, so I am still getting used to how network's run things and how they think and how people perceive shows.

People seem very passionate about the shows they love, so it's great to have a site, with such insite.

@Jon, seasons end in mid-May or sometimes late April. The gaps are usually the last three weeks of December and the last three weeks of March (after the November/February sweeps). But since there's another six weeks of breaks, they usually come randomly or when a big event (Superbowl, Oscars) is aired.
A good rule of thumb is - if one scripted show on a network takes a week-long break, they all do. That's not always the case though.

@Shimbo:
The Three Rivers gap has already been filled with Undercover Boss, so I think there'll only be two new dramas (CM2 and Hawaii 5-0; CC and Numbers canned) and one or two new comedies (Chuck Lorre's and Shatner's comedies have the best shot IMO; Gary and AoP will be canceled and either Christine or Rules would have to go to midseason probably) which is tragic because both new sitcoms sound pretty stupid.

People should stop commenting on undercover boss. You obviously have no idea. Many said it was a dumb idea to put it after the superbowl. Others said it wont last but a few weeks 1 season etc. Obviously cbs execs were much smarter than many of us speculating on the show. I bet undercover brother will do just fine next season.

Of the several things that don't make sense in your sked pete, this makes the least sense:

SUNDAY
7 – 60 Minutes
8 – Undercover Boss
9 – Criminal Minds
10 – Criminal Minds spinoff (NEW DRAMA)

@aznfratboy - if 5-0 is as you describe, I won't watch it - I am too close to the edge of the demo not to remember the original, which was fairly good...

...and TVBTN should send a nice gift basket to Ms. Tasker - thank you, CBS, for giving us something to talk about :D

@ Holly

Thank you for answering my questions! I heard that CBS might only pick up 2-3 drama's instead of its usual 3-4. Do you know if there is any word yet how many drama's they are picking up this season?
I don't want to beat a dead horse, but wouldn't they want to keep Medium and GW on Friday's because it does fare pretty well in the ratings (especially for that night?

Three Rivers is gone- which opened up room for 1 new drama and presumably CC and Numb3ers are gonna get the axe which opens up room for 2 more, wouldn't that be enough? I was just thinking about it.

@ Medium fanatic

The spoiler sites only show's 18 episodes being filmed, but Medium is supposed to have 22 episodes this season. They might not be done filming. They still have the end of March and early April. And unlike GW there was no word the last episode they shot, was the season finale.

Thanks stefan. I know they air weekly, I was just wondering if the seasons were already over? But if it's just a 3 week gap, that's fine with me. But when are the normal big gaps/breaks between first runs.

Thanks stefan. I know they air weekly, I was just wondering if the seasons were already over? But if it's just a 3 week gap, that's fine with me. But when are the normal big gaps/breaks between first runs.

@waterflame,
every show has its pace. I know, for example, that B&S is shooting episode 20 right now; they have 4 more to go.
Series usually finish production in late April, which means they usually wrap up the shooting part in late March/early April. However if GW is already shooting the season finale, I think there's next to no chance that the season has 24 episodes. Looks like this season's last episode will be the show's 107th.

@Jon,
all scripted shows are shown on a weekly basis, however, there are some gaps between episodes sometimes because 22-24 weeks of programming have to be stretched out to ~36 weeks. Right now it seems that CBS is taking a three-week break from its scripted programming (I have no idea why though) so look for your shows in early April again.

So maybe a dumb question. But I've really only started watching alot of these scripted dramas this season. When would new episodes(after this weeks) of Criminal minds, CSI: NY, Mentalist, and all that start airing?

I might be mistaken but I thought the main reason CBS picked up Medium was to make sure it had enough episodes for its syndication deal with Lifetime. Once that magic number is established then the show becomes more expendable to make room for new shows. I watch Medium and enjoy it, but I certainly won't be crushed if its the end of the road. I was glad CBS gave it at least one more season, but honestly it isn't on my favorites list. If it comes back I will watch, if it gets cancelled, meh it was nice while it lasted.

Hawaii Five-0 for 8pm Wednesday, it seems like Magnum PI and Miami Vice, crime somewhat with comedy and sex, so it won't be too "mind-killing" for the kids. I doubt CM2 will go at 8pm, purely because I've seen some episodes of CM, and I doubt parents will want to see a guy beat another guy to a pulp at 7pm in some regions of the US

Undercover Boss at 9pm, easy.

The Good Wife/CM2 for the Sunday and Tuesday 10pm slots.

NCIS LA will probably get another season after it's father show, and then groom it for Thursday night, I personally think the 2010-11 season will be the final season for CSI, it's the same old crap over and over again... Then in the 11-12 year, either NCIS LA or Mentalist will take it's spot.

Granted there's still lots of decisions over at CBS to be made still, that's just my 2 cents.

Medium also deserves an "S" and P and F on this list.
Yes CBS you should fear the Medium Fanatics because were older and buy cars and other products you advertise to us.

Hey the spoiler sites only show 18 episodes of Medium this season...Any rabid Medium fans know for sure?

Yah! Friday is female empowerment night and keep it that way...

Noooo! You were like the only one here besides me cheering for Christine and now this! :P
Give it another season, then scrap the whole thing.

I'm just thinking after two seasons of low ratings CBS had enough and looking at their list of pilots, a lot seems good enough. But of course I'm still hoping for a renewal, I'm counting on Warner Brothers to fight for this show :D

In the statement that there will be season 5 of GW they said there are gonna be 24 episodes(which isn't a suprise after last years ratings), but Wikipedia says they're 22. Idk... There was a post from the cast and they said that they're filming the season finale THIS WEEK. They're 9 episodes ahead(if this season has 24 eps), is that normal?

Scott,
moving The Good Wife seems pretty logical at this point. It's the weak link of the Tuesday line-up, plus it blends in perfectly with GW/Medium.

But I agree with everything else you said - first and foremost, there's NO WAY CBS will opt to expand their comedy line-up! And then the other stuff Pete said... very far-fetched.

Pete -

Not a Chance in Hell that is their schedule. There's no way they're splitting the NCISs, there's no way they'll move The Good Wife to Fridays, there's no way they keep Rules, Gary, Christine, and Accidentally, or even three of those, and it's extrememly unlikely they'd move HIMYM and Mentalist from their current date and time, respectively.

@Shimbo,

CBS does have the most stable schedule of the nets and they don't tend to move things or mess with success. Their problem for the past several years is that very few of their shows do horrible and so they end up having to cancel something that's doing OK just to make room for new shows. If Medium (or GW) gets canceled it won't be because they have bad ratings, it will be because CBS is really high on their pilots and need to open up more timeslots.

Why do you give Gary Unmarried a significant edge over Accidentally on Purpose? AOP has much better ratings in a much more competitive timeslot.
