I'm not sure if we'll see the fast national numbers for adults 18-49 later, but the local People meters were so close (see second blurb) that it's possible that Letterman could win that demo once a broader section of the population is counted in (update: indeed that was the case, Letterman bested Leno w/adults 18-49 and 25-54). Especially with NBC performing much worse in prime time than last Monday night, the gap narrowing is no surprise.  But with adults 18-49, it might have gone away completely!

  • "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" (3.5/9 in metered-market households) led the time period over CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman" (3.2/8) and ABC's "Nightline (3.1/8) and "Jimmy Kimmel Live" (1.5/5) in Nielsen's 56 metered markets.
  • In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” (1.2/5) ranked #1 among the major networks in the time period over "Late Show" (1.1/5), "Nightline" (1.1/4) and "Jimmy Kimmel Live" (0.6/3).
  • At 12:35 a.m., "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" (1.4/5 in metered-market households) trailed CBS's "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" (1.6/6).  In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, "Late Night" (0.6/4 in 18-49) trailed "Late Late Show" (0.7.4).

Of course, the premiere week honeymoon is over, things will go back to how they were with Leno suffering a few percentage points due to the Conan deal.

the real news will come in the Fall when Conan premieres.

Oh boy, here come all the Team Coco folks and the Leno haters to say, “Told ya so.” Also, all the Team Coco folks will point out that the 10 pm lead in does have some effect on The Tonight Show, since Law & Order only got a 1.5 last night in 18-49 (comparable to Leno’s 10 pm show) and thus, Leno’s Tonight Show had its lowest ratings so far.

Me, I think it’s going to be a seesaw battle between Leno and Letterman, with Leno winning more often, but the gap being much closer than it was over the previous 15 years.

  19. I blame Law and Order for Leno’s decline last night. Obviously, the 10 p.m. show is the catalyst. Right?
