ok, so just watched parenthood. i really wanted to hate it cuz I luv bashing NBC, cuz its so easy, haha, but I really couldnt

i do think it is one of the higher quality shows on network television, its writing is good, acting is pretty good, and the stories are easily relatable. I do think NBC made a mistake by putting it on at 10pm, it is a lighter side show, that the whole family could enjoy. if it does make it to a season 2, my advice to NBC, promote the heck out of it during the summer, and move it to an 8pm slot. This show has something, I dont know what exactly, but NBC should really try to make it work.

Lost is a good show. But people who don't watch Lost generally don't have the time to get caught up. Lost is one of those shows where if you miss an episode you will be “Lost.” (excuse that pun). I watched the first two seasons of the show and it just got weird for me. When I get time, I will probably pick it back up again… but the gist of what I am saying is… not many people have the time to catch up on 5 seasons of a television show.

I agree here. Chuck could be THE BEST hour-long series of television NBC has. Looking at the ratings… Parenthood is ahead of Chuck but only has had two episodes… those ratings will drop a good bit I would guess. Law and Order SVU, although not particularly my style, pulls in a bit higher ratings than Chuck… however, it is a LOT more expensive. Chuck, I believe is the only NBC hour scripted show that could even possibly pull over a 2.0 in that timeslot. If NBC does not renew Chuck right now, the company might have lost their minds… I think with a better timeslot and possibly a better network, Chuck could EASILY be pulling 3.5s. It is just that caliber of a show. I won't comment on NBC's Thursday night 30 minute shows because they don't have terribly great competition. I would be interested to see what the office/30 rock would pull in that monday timeslot against new episodes of House, How I Met Your Mother, Reality television *shudders*, and whatever else airs that I am leaving out.

Ever tried Chuck? I find it to be a “feel good show.” One of the few shows I actually still look forward too. Got some comedy and some action. Although the idea is crazy (having a computer downloaded into your brain), the character development is great. You can almost imagine yourself in the same situation reacting in very similar ways to Chuck. It is pretty funny, has a bit of action, bit of romance, and a whole lot of indirect movie references. Overall, it is one of the best written shows I think I have ever seen. Until this season the episodes have been very family friendly, but unfortunately there has been a small shift away from family friendliness… Violence and sex just seem to pull in more viewers….

The problem with Parenthood, besides being somewhat of a downer (as another poster noted) is that there is nothing new on it. All of the characters have been seen before (overbearing patriarch, his patient wife, varous adult children with typical problems, at least one obnoxious teen, etc), the situations presented have been done ad nauseum, and with little new to say, I don't see Parenthood lasting very long.

As for the rest of the ratings, there are no real surprises. Just another typical Tuesday in primetime.

Any bets on which week Chuck will beat Parenthood? I give Parenthood one more week, then Chuck will beat it on a consistent basis.

Chuck's competition: House, HIMYM/(RoE/AoP) was BBT, Bachelor/Dancing
Parenthood's competition: the forgotten (likely cancelled?), The Good Wife

NBC promoted Parenthood like crazy during Olympics, while Chuck only got 1 commercial.

No surprise with Parenthood-We watched because it was so touted by everyone as such a great show, the cast looked good, they promoted it like it was the best thing since sliced bread and then watching it was a huge downer….one bummer after another. I like shows that relate to real life and what life is really like (coping with the journey of everyday stressors)e just as much as shows I watch for an escape but there wasn't a single character that was likable. Why don't networks understand the components of good, successful, watchable, relatable, likable shows? There are so many ways to go about getting a great combination and then you get a premier this bad? Seriously! I was a little concerned when my mother said, we watched the first 15 minutes but haven't watched the rest yet (saved on dvr)-then I watched it (also on dvr, like every show I like-it goes on the dvr) and it was one bummer after another-I was drained by the half-way point! There's a big difference between drama, tragedy, real life chaos of families, kids, divorce, mid-life crisis, career balance, marriage blah blah blah but what keeps you going is the good stuff-no matter how little or big. There was no good stuff until the very last scene-20 seconds of likable character, 20 seconds of a good connection between two people-out of an hour of nastiness, thoughtless, rude, narcissistic, me-first, I'm so much better than you, blah blah blah un-likable characters. What an absolute, utter disappointment! I am surprise they only lost 16% but then if the premiere numbers weren't so great, maybe people knew better than I did and saw this show for what it was before I did. UGH, I really got sucked into thinking it was going to be good. I should have known – NBC only heavily promotes their bad shows, and ignores their gems-that should have been the first clue.

Just cause you promote something, doesn't mean people should want to watch it. Everyone isn't a drone who just does what marketers tell them to.

I watched The Goodwife last week for the first time, and it was very good.

Haven't seen parent hood yet, but if it's all over the place like modern family; my first time watching it will be my last.

Parenthood didn't really affect The Good Wife either way, which has been in the high 2's all season long for CBS, a pretty consistent performer. CBS skews so old in this hour one couldn't have expected it to seriously impact anything else.

If you have not heard of the The Good Wife, clearly you have been away broadcast TV since last summer. It is a CBS drama, hence the viewership and old skew. As it were, Julianna Margulies starred on NBC's ER for quite some time.

I can't believe that 13.64 million people watch the Good Wife (I've never even heard of it before) yet only 5.709 million people watch Parenthood (which was promoted endlessly during the Olympics). Though in 18-49 the Good Wife was 2.8 and Parenthood was very close at 2.5. What's so great about the Good Wife that gets 13.64 million people to tune in, or is it all 50+ year olds who watch the Good Wife? Also I wonder what would happen if these two shows were to swap channels at the same time slot. Would Parenthood's viewers/numbers increase a bit and would Good Wife's decrease? That's what I think.

It's an ensemble cast, plus it's a family. Who do you propose we dump? How would you explain their disappearance?
In hind sight, the only thing that could've “uncrowded” the cast would be if the actors who play the grandparents were only recurring.

As it is, there are 14 regulars, same as in B&S. Plus, B&S has more adult regulars (12), so the adult regulars here (9) get even more screentime than those on B&S (kids usually have 1-2 scenes per episode). And since nobody's complaining about B&S being overcrowded, I really can't understand people complaining about that here. Give it a couple of episodes to memorize who's who.

They are just two episodes in, they would find they way around hopefully. As
long as Parenthood won't drop below 2.5, I think the show is safe. Crossing
my fingers for it,

On another note, Glee's repeat number is a great indication on how it will
perform when new episodes come in, I think a 5.0 is possible (it could beat
LOST!)

Glee did wonderfully last night for a repeat and for being away about as long as FlashForward has. This a positive sign for when it returns and gets the post-Idol slot; it could determine what day works best for it(IMO I prefer Tuesday). Looking forward to it!

As for Parenthood, ooh I was expecting around a 2.8, but I think BL being lower than last week is partly to blame. Too bad, ’cause I thought that episode was better than the pilot; I really liked the scene with Sarah’s daughter when she gets held back one year. Hopefully it won’t trend down much further; since Castle & Chuck can get renewed with their kind of ratings and that it is on NBC, I figured Parenthood could too. We’ll see.

I’ll end it all by saying BUH-BYE forgotten, you will be forgotten.

Maybe the CW will finally realize that the best way to lose the few viewers you have it by having a 3 month hiatus. What they SHOULD have done was have privileged in the fall, and gossip girl in the spring (for example).

NBC shhould have aired the pilot plus episode 2 on the same night last week. 2ndly, some of their programming might be more succesful on Wednesday nights. They should air Biggest Loser + Parenthood on that night and maybe move Law & Order SVU to Tuesdays following Biggest Loser. Also, they could stand to try Chuck on 8 pm on Wednesdays.

Was there “Idol” overrun with “Glee”? Nonetheless, still not a bad showing for a rerun. The show won A Golden Globe and a SAG award since it took some time off, so that could help lure more viewers.

Following the Biggest Loser with anemic competition from the other networks is just about the easiest timeslot Parenthood could get, and it got an Olympic marketing blitz, and it’s still doing only barely acceptable. Leno got about 2.0′s in the post-Loser slot, and hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if Parenthood was in the 2.2-2.0 range by the end of the season.

Glee after Idol is going to do great come April 13. Glee was doing well on its own in the fall, but combine that with the monster Idol lead-in – a highly compatible one at that, given the target audience is nearly identical – and I predict mid-4.0′s, maybe even a 5.0 for Glee.

ABC can’t wait fir DWTDS to return and even V. ABC coming in fourth on a night with Lost—something is wrong. hmm it’s the fact te ABC is airing a repeat of Lost and the forgotten.

I think V will do moderately good in the post- Lost slot. I mean the thing other shows that have been post-Lost had was not a following or good ratings before airing after Lost. V however has both. V did great on Tuesdays at 8 with no lead-in. So I think ratings might drop a little because it’s moving to 10 but it will do exactly what ABC expects from the show!
