A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 36% currently, from 30% at the same point in 2009. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.

  1. I can't imagine why. This show is scattered, plotless, and pretty unfunny.

  2. MapleLeafer

ABC Comedy Wednesdays looked to have already peaked all the shows are down and even the 8pm that doesn't go against Idol. Back to the drawing board for them.

Modern Family is doing well but it is no Two and a Half Men or Big Bang Theory which getting 17 million viewers and a 6 in the main demo. Its not even on How I Met Your Mother or Rules of Engagement level. Therefore its not a hit and probably never will be.

  3. Kevin

What do people see in this show?

  4. Is this good or bad for Scrubs? Frankly, Cougar Town isn't ratings gold either, and would do exactly the same as Scrubs on its own. It's got a cushy spot, while Scrubs is starting the night and wasn't promoted.

  5. Ryan, a 1.5 rating for Scrubs is almost exactly its new episode average for this season. It's dead unless ABC *really* wants to produce more episodes for syndication.

  6. Julie

What I don't get is why would people support Two and a Half Men when they have a lead actor who is invovled in Domestic Violence. This is just one more thing that makes it okay for men to get away with whatever they want with no consequences.

Ummmm HIMYM had a 3.9 demo for it's last episode and ROE had a 3.6 for it's last episode. Also, HIMYM wasn't big until it's third season, so Modern Family is doing VERY well.

  8. Tony

Cougar Town needs a new show runner. And ABC needs to get a good family comedy to go with The Middle to strengthen that 8 pm hour.

  9. ABCHasProblems

Are they seriously trying to spin Scrubs' numbers from last night? A 1.5 rating is about what Hank averaged in October, and we all know what happened to THAT show! I like Scrubs and wish more episodes could be produced to wrap up this little spin-off of a 9th season, but there's absolutely no way it's returning to the schedule when Modern Family repeats outrate it (and give The Middle a better lead-in to improve upon).

I caught on pretty late, but Modern Family is one of the funniest shows on television right now.
