"Caprica's" Ratings Fall Back

After seeing a bump up last week to its first .5 rating with adults 18-49 in a month, this past Friday Caprica fell back to a .4 with adults 18-49, and it shed a few viewers too.

Personally, and sadly, I bailed on the show about 10 minutes into the episode on March 5th and didn't bother finishing it or watching Friday's new episode.  I really wanted to like the show, but so far it's not grabbing me.

Strangely, I am still interested in Caprica's ratings.  Again it tied with Starz Spartacus: Blood and Sand with adults 18-49, even though Syfy is in about 75 million more homes in the U.S. than Starz.

Caprica Season 1 ratings:

Date Episode 18-49 Rating Viewers (millions)
22-Jan-10 Pilot 0.4 1.602
29-Jan-10 Rebirth 0.5 1.411
5-Feb-10 Reins of a Waterfall 0.4 1.128
19-Feb-10 Gravedancing 0.4 0.976
26-Feb-10 There Is Another Sky 0.4 1.127
5-Mar-10 Know They Enemy 0.5 1.155
12-Mar-10 The Imperfections of Memory 0.4 1.071
19-Mar-10 Ghosts in the Machine
26-Mar-10 End of Line

  1. Of course it's ratings are falling. Your job would be much easier if I just sent you a list of shows I like, and you predicted their demise. Wonderfalls, Journeyman, Firefly, Jericho…the list goes on.

I like to say that quality is not an indication of ratings and this is proof. The last few episodes of CAPRICA are as good as you will get on TV.

  3. Jack, I **really** liked the episode on 2/26, but the 3/5 episode wasn't what I was looking for as a follow-up and I wasn't interested in gutting it out. That's, not a comment on the show's quality, just my personal preferences.

Chris, haha, I'm game, what are you watching THIS season besides Caprica?

  4. ljo

I have to admit, Caprica is a show that I will be giving up on. Probably Stargate Universe also.

I think it got bump from people stopping in to see what all the 'fuss' was about but it's not a show you can just drop in on; it's very much an acquired taste. I'm still following it but I'm not engrossed, more, bemused. What surprises me is that Syfy thought this show with it's subject matter would draw the Cheerios ads and the mainstream viewers they say they want. Maybe they were thinking it would be like a Twin Peaks for cable? If Caprica gets a second season full season I'll be surprised UNLESS of course, Syfy has nothing in the wings to take it's place. My gut feeling? They've given the green light to shows (SGU, Sanctuary) whose ratings are so so or down because they just don't have anything else right now so I'm hoping if they're willing to green light mediocrity so that they have time slots filled up, then they also give Caprica a chance as well. The cost is going to work against it though. It's pretty expensive for a vanity piece.

Bummed to hear this. It's a good show.

I agree, Robert, I was intrigued by the 2/26 episode, but the 3/5 episode was quite a letdown. It felt entirely like a prelude… and it's just like, c'mon, we're on episode 7, let's not be doing a PRELUDE. Let's get going somewhere. I still find the show potentially enthralling despite being so uneven… IMHO it's the closest thing TV has ever given us to true SF.

    No. Just no.

Caprica is a good show so far but it's nowhere near being the best thing you can watch on TV. Shows like Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Mad Men and The Wire blow it out of the water.

You're not doing the show any favors by wildly overpraising it.

  10. How about your predictions about Eureka now that they're casting BSG alums. :) ~

  11. Empire

I actually tried to get into Caprica it is a well written series, just really slow at points most episodes. Sucks that the fans of BSG are not showing up. I get the Premiere was released and seen by so many people, but it looks as though fans just don't want to bother with Caprica a shame really. Haven't seen BSG but do plan to eventually.

I've felt the same way about this show since the pilot. It moves very slowly and lacks any real forward momentum. Unless these last two episodes are huge improvements, I'll likely be giving up on it if it does see a second season, which doesn't seem all that likely with these numbers anyway.

  13. kariato

Love the show but the timing on the last two episodes is totally off. It feels like they are padding the episodes to make if fit the 10 show run. Even long form TV drama has to have some episodic nature. These shows don't have a single theme, basically they are taking the soap opera concept to far. Even though SCIFI plots are soap operas like, the need to have a core theme to each episode.

  14. I completely agree. The progress being made feels so slight that you almost don't feel it at all. I still think it has promise, but it is just progressing at a snails pace.

  15. well they are building up to the mid season finale so hopefully it will pick up a little

  16. groove365

Did the people who like Caprica also like Flash Gordon?
I'm genuinely curious as to which audience SyFy is aiming it's shows at these days.

  17. Anthony_m

I love the show so naturally its doing poorly. It will see 10 more hours in the fall but a 2nd season is certainly not a given. The only thing in the shows favor is Sci Fi has a slow hook for underperfoming shows.

Are these the kind of numbers that syfy would consider canceling it over? Cable seems like such a crapshoot, especially syfy…

I watched the pilot, it was pretty good, but I didn’t watch after. I guess I made the right choice, seems like season 2 won’t happen.
