Southland ; And More Cable Finals

Last night TNT aired the third new episode from season two of Southland averaged a .7 with adults 18-49, and 1.86 million viewers.

That's down from last week's 2.055 million viewers overall, but flat with adults 18-49.  It's definitely no Bad Girls Club ratings wise and MTV's 16 and Pregnant beat it at 10pm as well with adults 18-49.

  1. Southland is dead. :(

  2. Empire

Agreed Southland is dead. Kind of sucks when you think about it though, that a show like 16 and pregnant beat it and other shows. But Tuesday at 10 are becoming pretty competitive all of a sudden.

  3. kevx301

Tuesdays at 10 are not very competitive in that field. Parenthood, Justified and The Good Wife, I'd say the first and third shows don't really go after the same viewers as Southland does.

The show just isn't getting ratings. Everybody predicted this, no need to break out the excuse bingo card for Southland. It's just not a draw.

  4. cimmer

Wow, I had no idea that Bad Girl's Club was such a juggernaut.

  5. Reality TV is going to be the death of us all, and it's that people refuse to look away from the trainwreck it is…So over this reality tv crap.

  6. Tom

I'm frankly shocked that Justified had no material effect on Southland. Who the heck is watching Southland demographically – women only?

  7. GloomShroom

Southland is a great show. I'm enjoying these few new episodes while I still can. Good Tv struggles for the same reason capitalism has flourished… people are collectively moronic sheep.

  8. Larryville_Slim

Seems the more I like a program, such as Southland, the more certainly it is doomed! Maybe if they had a cop who'd gains a lot of weight, and then suffers abuse and humiliation at the hands of a personal trainer… or maybe had a young, pretty female cop who wants to be a singer and suffers abuse and humiliation at the hands of a panel of judges… or maybe they could place Ben McKenzie on Dancing With the Stars, where he'd have an affair with Karina, and Bruno would admire his “big guns” and… oh, never mind.

I'll enjoy the remaining episodes of Southland and I'll miss it when it's gone. I hope they don't change a thing. Great show, but clearly not for everyone.

wow, it's dead, i'm wondering however why nbc thought it was too dark — i'm not seeing it. If NBC had every intention of cancelling the jay leno show, it should have held on to this show.

to be fair, it's in such a difficult time slot, which it had a lead in like the closer.

  10. Craig_212

Really sucks for Southland. The second season has been phenomenal so far.

  11. I remember watching the pilot episode of Southland and has enjoyed watching it ever since. I honestly think that it is a great show.

  12. decaprise

I really enjoy Southland and I'm disappointed it's not doing a bit better than this. It's very compelling and tense and I love watching it. It doesn't feel like any other cop show I've seen before and I absolutely love it. A couple more episodes left and I'll be sure to watch them.

  13. DW8

Southland is such a good show. I'll be sad to see it go.

  14. CapitalistInfidel

Gloom, could you explain to me how it is that you think Capitalism is bad? One individual making a product and selling it to another individual at an agreed upon price. Oh yeah, that sounds awful. If anything we need much more unfettered free enterprise for it's the engine of democracy, freedom, and liberty.

No excuses for Southland (I don't watch), but don't forget White Collar and Sons of Anarchy. SOA is only in the fall and White Collar's 1st season is already over, but if it would come back at the same time next year it would likely face these shows too.

Reality TV hasn't killed anyone (that I know of). I personally avoid it, but I can certainly see the draw both from the network and viewer's perspective. Networks are looking for something that is a ratings draw and is a water cooler type show where people watch it first run and talk about it. Reality can have these qualities and often does more so than your average remake, soap, or cop show. Also, reality is cheaper to produce than shows with quality actors so it is a win-win from the network's perspective. From the viewer's perspective, there is the water cooler effect where if people are watching and talking about it maybe I should too. Also, many reality tv shows tap into people's, perhaps especially Americans', competitive desires (look at the success of sports broadcasts on TV). They may have more interactive features too, which seems to be the wave of the future with video games, movies, and all other media becoming more and more interested in immersing the user (think the Wii, 3D, polls/voting for whatever, etc.). So, while it may be 'crappy' in the sense that it is not brilliant fiction or even nonfiction (in which case most TV is crappy), there are many compelling reasons for its rise to prominence and success.

  17. I know that it's a win for the networks b/c it's cheap to produce, much cheaper than scripted shows and like the train wrecks they are the audience will not look away,So win/win, cheap and ratings but the majority of them exemplify people behaving at their basest. Have you ever seen an episode of Bad Girls Club?? Unfortunately i've been subjected to it b/c of my younger sister. ALL she watches is reality TV…I'm not saying drama's are these shining bastions of truth & justice, but at the end of the day you now it was something made up in someone's head, and whereas reality tv isn't true in the sense that it's a documentary, these are real people carrying on like this, and i'm convinced that the majority of these reality tv show candidates are people that truly need help, Attention seeking,Willing to do ANYTHING for their 5 minutes of fame.

  18. charleswillard

I don't get it. Great writing, fine acting, good stories … maybe viewers just don't want cop shows …

  19. Arupadhatu

pregnent girls, bad girl, girls who are boys, gold diggin girls and girls with shitload of kids, tragic.

  20. Johnmano

I think that Southland is a great show. The new season is fantastic!!! I know it has a slim chance of survival, I hope that somehow it survives. Agree that reality TV is about as worthless as Teet's on a bull.
